H. H RsH COVER Filed Feb. 4, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY I Patented June 10, 1930 HARRY. HERSH, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN- COVER Application filed February 4, 1926. Serial No. 85,871.
' end elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow marked 4' on Fig. 1; Fig. is an end elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow marked 5 on Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a section of the cover taken on the line 66 on Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, the base being shown in elevation; Fig. 7 is a section of'the cover taken on the line 77 on Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, the base being shown in elevation; and Fig. 8 is an enlarged section of details of construction.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a cover which is intended to be detachably secured to a base 2. The base 2 is intended to support any kind of adevice, not shown, which is secured to the base 2, and the base2 is intended to be secured to any suitable support such as a wall of a room, for example.
The object of the invention is to provide a cover which can be readily connected with a base, or disconnected therefrom, without requiring the use of-any tool, which will be cheap to construct, and which will be firmly held connected'with the base while readily removable from the base and readily reen gageable with the base. i
Fig. 1 of the drawings'illustrates the cover and base in a perpenc'licular position as though the base were secured to the wall of a room and the top parts of the base and cover are rounded, as designated by reference numorals 3 and 4, not only to give a pleasing appearance to the eye of an observer but also for an important principle of operation to be hereinafter described.
The bottom of the base 2 is preferably provided with a plurality of notches, or apertures, 5 and 6, while the top of'the base 2 is preferably provided with only a single notch, or aperture, 7 This construction results in at least a three-point connection between the bitse and the cover and at opposite ends there 0 i In the specific construction illustrated'by the drawings, the base 2 is illustrated as provided with an overturned edge 8 extending clear around the base, the edge 8 and the top 9'of the base'2 being connected by a curved part 10. It will be readily understood that the base 2'and the'cover 1 can be produced cheaply by dies.
Lips 11,12, and 13 are struck inwardly on the cover 1 to enter the notches 5, 6, and 7 to secure the cover 1 upon the base 2. The notches'5, '6, and 7 are preferably spaced from the back side 14 0f the base 2 a'sufficient distance to leave catches 15, behind which the lips 11, 12, and 13 may engage, and the lips 11, 12, and 13 are preferably inclined, as clearly shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, to hook behind the catches 15 to'hold thezcover -1 securely connected with the base 2.
' in engaging it with the base 2 or disengaging 3 it from the base 2 is that the cover isso shaped that pressure applied to the sides thereof will elong'ate'the cover 2 so thata lip or lips will be disengaged from a'fnotch' or notches. If the fingers and thumb of a hand. apply pressure to the sides of the cover in the vicinity of the points Aand B on Fig. 1 of the drawings'and the bottom of the cover 1s heldin contact with the bottom of the base, i
an elongation of the cover will be produced, as indicated by the dotted lines on Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, sufficient to disengage the lip 11 from the notch 7 and the cover can be readily removed from the base by swinging its top away from the base and then moving it downwardly.
In order to provide for a nice tight fit of the cover and to prevent its being moved and to avoid any rattling noises, the cover is provided with a skirt 16 which projects beyond both sides 17 of the cover at approximately its mid-length and also extends continuously around the bottom of the cover.
The skirt 16 can be omitted, if desired, as the principle of construction and operation of ,the cover only requires that the sides 17 of the cover avoid obstructions which would prevent their being pressed towards each other. The skirt 16 also assists in keeping dirt from entering between the cover .and the base. Fig. 6 of the drawing illustrates a practically dust and dirt proof fit between the cover and the base and Fig. 7 of the drawings illustrates a practically dirt and dust proof fit between the sides 17 of the cover and the base. The cover is made of material, prefer- .ably metal, thin enough so that the sides can be readily pressed towards each other by the thumb and finger of'a hand, and the curved parts 10 of the base permit the sides of the cover being pressed together, by rising slightly, so that the construction is practically and substantially dust and dirt proof.
The invention is capable of being embodied in somewhat difierent constructions from those illustrated by the drawings without departing from the principle of construction and operation of the invention which is to have a flexible cover of such shape that com pression of the sides of the cover produces an elongation of the cover at substantially right angles to the direction of application of the pressure.
Thenotches 5, 6, and 7 may be of any suitable shape adapted to receive the lips 11, 12, and 13. The drawings illustrate the lips 11, 12, and 13 as punched inwardly at the edge 17 of the cover and at the edge of the skirt 1'6, and these lips may have their extremities 18 bent over to securely engage behind the catches 15, as clearly shown by Fig. 8 of the drawings, for additional security.
lVhat I claim is 1. The combination with a base of substantially rectangular form having one end rounded, of a cup-shaped cover of flexible sheet material conforming substantially in shape and dimensions to the base, and fitted thereover with its ends and sides in contact with the base, portions of the sides of the cover adjacent the rounded end thereof being of p less width than the portions of the sides adjacent the opposite end of the base, whereby by lateral pressure on said narrower portions of its side walls the cover may be elongated to separate the rounded end thereof from the corresponding end of the base, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a base of substantially rectangular form having one end rounded, and having its side and end faces connected with its top face by a curved surface, of a cup-shaped cover of flexible material having substantially the outline of the base, and applied thereto, coacting latching means at the rounded ends of the cover and base for retaining the cover in position on the base, portions of the side walls of the cover adjacent the rounded end thereof terminating substantially at the said curved surface of the base, and portions of said walls adjacent the other end of the cover extending beyond said curved surface over the side faces of the base, whereby when pressure is exerted laterally on said narrower portions of the sides of the cover the latter will be elongated to disengage said latching means.
3. The combination with a base of substantially rectangular form having one end rounded and provided with a notch or aperture, of a cup-shaped cover of flexible material having a marginal side wall surrounding the base, the portion of the side wall of the cover conforming to the rounded end of the base having a lip extending into said notch or aperture when the cover is applied to the base, the cover being adapted to be elongated sufficient-ly to withdraw said lip from engagement with the base by pressure exerted on the opposite sides of the cover at points adjacent the rounded end.
4. The combination with a cover, of a base extending partly within the cover, the cover and base having interengaging means for retaining the cover on the base, and the base having roundedsurfaces adjacent and within portions of the margin of the cover, whereby squeezing action upon the cover margin will cause said margin to act as a wedge with said rounded surfaces to free the cover from the base.
5. The combination with a base having a rounded surface connecting its top and marginal faces, of a cover fitted to the base and including a marginal wall within which the base is positioned when the cover is applied thereto, coacting latching means being provided on the cover and base for retaining the cover in position and substantially opposite portions of the free edge of the marginal wall of the cover being so related to the rounded surfaces of the base that by lateral pressure on said portions of said wall, said edge and surface will coact to disengage the latching means and free the cover from the base.
In witness whereof 1 hereto afiix my signature.
HARRY HERSH.
