This invention relates to fastening means for a name plate, or a plate of: that charactor, to secure said plate to a supporting surface, it more particularly relating to means for securing a name plate to the radiator shell of an automobile.
The object or this invention is to provide a fastening means of the character referred to which will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture and ellective tor the purpose for which it is designed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation off a portion of a radiator shell showing; a name plate secured thereto with the improved fastening means, the name plate bein shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line (0 m of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a blank metallic disk from which a part of the fastening means is formed.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the disk before forming.
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the dish after forming.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line b-b of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a rear view of the name plate.
Fig. 8 is a section on the line (es-cot Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 isan elevation of the rear side of the radiator shelL- Fig. 10 is a section on the line d-d of Fig. 9.
Referring to the draw1ngs,-1 represents a portion of a radiator shell or other surface to which a plate is to be applied. This shell is cut and bent to form a transversely elongated opening 9, the upper and lower walls of which are inturned to provide a pair of lips 3.
The plate which is to be attached to the shell is indicated at l, being shown in the present case as of triangular form, although any desired conformation may be miparted thereto. In the present embodiment of the invention, the rear side oi the plate is formed with a circular recess 5 and in this recess is secured, by soldering or otherwise, a member 6 which in the present case is oil disk-like form.
It isto be understood however that this plate and securing member" may be united together in any other approved manner and that the particular shape oi the securing member is unimportant. This dish 6 before insertion in the recess is cut along the dotted lines 7 indicated in Fig. at and then bent to form rearwardly projecting; parallel transversely extending tongues 9, the intermediate portion of each tongue in the formation thereof" being bent toward the other tongue so as to provide spacing ribs 10 which are in contact with each other and serve to stiilen the tongues 9 and hold them in their initial spaced relation. v
in forming the lips 3 they are left spaced apart a distance less than the distance be tween the outer surfaces of the tongues 9. To apply the plate the tongues 9 are in sorted in the opening 2 and pressed to place, the lips 3 springing outwardly so as to tightly impinge the outer surfaces of the tongues 9 and hold the plates in position by frictional engagement.
TlllS form of fastener is one whlch is effective for holding the plate in position and is also one which can be economically manufactured.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a securing device such as described, a member"provided with a pair of parallel spacednpart rigid tongues, a rib formed 011 each of said tongues, said ribs cooperating to holdsaid tongues in their initially spaced relation, a second member provided with an opening to receive laid tongues, and oppositely arranged yieldable lips formed. on two of the walls of said opening to receive said tongues and hold the same by frictional engagement therewith.
2. In a securing device such as described, a member having a metallic elementsecured thereto cut and bent to form a pair of par allel spaced-apart rigid tongues, each of said tongues being bent to form a rib, said ribs coactii'lpg .to hold said tongues in their in itially spaced apart relation, a second member provided with an opening, two of the walls otsaid opening being bent to form parallel yieldable lips to receive said tongues and hold the same by frictional engagement therewith.
In a securing device such as described,
a name plate formed with a recess, a memyicldable lips on two of the walls of said her secured in'said recess cut and bent to opening to receive said tongues. form a' pair'of-rigid parallel tongues, each In testimony whereof, we have hereunto 10 of said tongues being bent to form cooperatset our hands this 13th day of October, 1927.
