My invention relates to cars, and particularly to the type known as cane cars, in.
which itis desired to obtain the maximum capacity 'for a given over-all length of underframe.
An object of my invention is to provide an end construction for a car combining maximum strength with maximum capacity for a given length of underframe.
Another object of my invention is to provide a methodof securing the corner post to a car in which the corner post is placed at the end of the car.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a portion of the end of the car showing the method of securing the corner post to the end sill; Fig. 2 is a portion of the side of the car showing the method of attaching the corner post to the side sill; Fig. 3 is a section taken along the'lines 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4L is a modification of the intermediate post shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings where like characters refer, to like parts, reference character 1 indicates the end of a car having end sills 2, side sills 3 and corner posts 4. As shown in Fig. 1, the side sills are framed into the end sills, but it is to be understood that the end sills and side sills can be formed with a butt joint and a connecting member placed between them. The corner post 4 is placed flush with the end sill and is secured to the outside face of the side sill and extends substantially the full depth of the member. Extending transversely of the car and connected to the top of the corner post 4 is a tie bar 5. Spaced transversely of the car and secured to the tie bar 5 and end sill 2'are intermediate posts 7. The posts 7 are riveted directly to tiebar 5 and have a gusset member 8 securing them to the end, sills. The-inner edge 9 of the corner post 4 slopes upwardly and towards the end of the car and has secured thereto a member '10 forming the end wall of the car which member is also tied to the side sills 3.

A modification of the intermediatepost'? is shown in Fig. Lin which the pressed member 12 may be substituted for the struc-. tural' member'7. The member 1.2 is sup, ported on the end sill member 2 and secured thereto by the members 13.. When an end wall 10 is used the wall 10 is secured to the sloping side 14: of the member 12.

by Letters Patent is:
1. In a car construction an end sill, a side sill, and a corner-post, said corner post being flush with said end sill and attached to said side sill, a gusset member secured to said end sill and corner post, said corner 'post sloping upwardly and outwardly towards the end of the car from the side sill.
2. In a carend construction combining maximum strength with maximum capacity, an end sill, side sills and corner posts, said corner posts being secured to the outer face of said sideisill and flush with said end sill,
the inner edge of said post sloping upwardly and towards the end of the car and a member secured to the sloping edges of said posts and to the side sills. 3. In a car construction in combination,- a side sill and a corner post, said corner post being secured to said side sill and extending substantially throughout'the depth thereof, one of the side edges of said post sloping upwardly from the side sill towards the end of the car and a member connect- 1O ing said sloping edge and side sill.
4. In a car construction an end sill, side sill and corner post connected together, said corner post being secured to the side sill, a gusset plate connecting said corner post and end sill, said corner post and gusset plate being trapezoidal in form; v p
5. In a car construction comprising an end sill, side sills and corner posts connected together, intermediate posts secured to said end sill and spaced transversely thereof between the corner posts, said corner posts extending substantially the full depth of said sills to which they are secured, said corner posts and intermediate posts sloping upwardly from the sill outwardly towards the end of the car.
