My invention relates to railway cars and in particular to that type of railway car known as the pan type quarry car having the ends projecting above the sides of the car.
An object of my invention is to provide 5 bracing for the end of the car body which will prevent bulging when the car is loaded.
Another object of my invention is to provide bracing for the prevention of the bulging of the end of the car which by the method of securing the same to the car body" strengthens the car body as a whole.
Referring now to the drawing Fig. 1 shows in elevation a portion of a car embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken along the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now in detail to the drawing where like reference characters refer to like parts, reference character 1 indicates a car body having sides 2 and end 3 supported on the usual underframe 4 which is mounted on trucks 5. Extending transversely of the car body beneath the floor thereof are brace members 6 which in the drawing are of I-section, said members having upwardly and outwardly inclined end portions 7 defining the outer limits of the sides of the body. Extending longitudinally of the body and adjacent the upper edge of the sides are members 8 to which are secured the portions 7 of the members 6. To these members 6 and 8 are secured the sides and floor of the body. Secured to the underframe and extending transversely of the body beneath the floor thereof are members 9 which form additional supports for the floor of the body. At each end of the car body is a member 10 joining the ends of the members 8 and extending above the upper edges thereof to form the upper limits of the end 3. Extending along the lower edges of the end 3 is the member 11 which is secured to the portion 10 and to the members 8. The car body is usually tiltably mounted on the underframe and for this purpose a plurality of trunnions 12 are mounted at each side of the body and supported in bearings 13 secured to the underframe.
When the car body is loaded the sides of the body are reinforced by the members 6 and 8 while the ends 3 having no reinforcements usually bulge from contact of the lading within the body and tend to cause distortion of the body framing. For the purpose of preventing the bulging of the ends of the car anddistortion of the body framing I have provided bracing at each end of the body. his bracing'comprises vertical members 14L spaced transversely of the end 3 and secured thereto, a transverse member 15 having it: end portions secured to the end 3 with its midportion spaced from the end 8 and secured to the outer portions of the members 14. The end portions of the member '15 may also be. secured to the-inembers Sextending longi' tudinally of the body by means of suitably shaped gusset members 16. In this manner the member 15 may be secured not only to the ends of the body but to the sides as well, so as to distribute any stress in the member" 15 away from the end 3 into the members 8 of the sides of the body. The member 15 may also be secured to the end of the body by means of members 17 disposed between the.

From the drawing and the above description it will be apparent that I have provided a bracing for the ends of the car body which will effectively prevent bulging under load and I have also tied this end bracing into the side framing of the body so as to impart rigidity to the body during the time the car is loaded and especially when the body is being tilted, by whatever means employed, to
discharge the lading.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bracing for the ends of a car body comprising a vertically disposed member and a transversely disposed member, said members being secured to the end of the body and to each other, said transverse member being disposed intermediate the vertical limits of the end and adjacent the upper edges of the side of the body.
2, In a dump car having a tiltably mounted body, said body comprising vertically disposed ends and inclined side walls, a reinforcing member at the upper edge of said side and end walls, and a transverse reinforcing member on said end Walls, said reinforcing members at the upper edges of said side and end walls being connected to said transverse end 5 Wall reinforcing member.
3. The combination in a dump car body of side and end walls, the intermediate portions of said end Wall extending above said side walls, a reinforcing member disposed along the upper edges of said walls, a transverse member on said end walls and connections be tween said reinforcing members and said transverse member.
4. The combination in a car body of side and end walls, vertically disposed bracing on said walls, reinforcing members along the top of said side and end walls, said bracin being i connected to said reinforcing mem ers, a transverse bracing member on said end walls intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof, and a connection between said transverse member and said reinforcing members.
5. The combination in a car body of longitudinal members adjacent the top of the sides of the body, transverse members secured outside the ends of said body and connecting the ends of said longitudinal members, said trans verse members intermediate their ends being spaced from said body.
