My invention belongs toLthat general class of devices known as mattresses and particularly an inner spring mattress ormattress in which a spring construction is arranged within the mattress and enclosed'byan'exterior covering. The invention has among its objects the production of a mattressof the kind described that is comfortable, attractive, durable, eficient and satisfactory.

It has particularly as an object the production eta mattress provided with a quilted side boxing in which the boxing is not only.

connected at opposite sides of the mattress through the covering sheets or ticking but is 1 also connected by suitable connecting means and so arranged as to maintain ,the boxing taut and without buckling. In a mattress of this kind where a quilted side boxing is employed provided with inner and outer plies 2 with filling between, the mattress after continued use may become unattractive owing to the buckling or wrinkling of the side boxing. With the construction shown the boxing retains its shape at all times with a minimum of buckling.

Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in-tlie art from the disclosure herein given. v To this endmy invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of partsherein shown and'described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which only one embodiment of the invention is shown, 5 a resilient spring construction or the like is provided consisting of the desired number of springs l enclosed in a cover 2. It should be understood that while one type of spring construction is shown, the spring construction in itself forms no part of my invention andthe same may be constructed in any other suitable'manner. The mattress is made up with filling 3 of cotton felt, curled hair, kapock or any other material suitable for the purpose, and covered with the cover sheets 4 of suitable ticking. Around the edge of the. mattress isarranged an edge boxing which consists of inner and outer plies 5 and 6 of suitable fabric between which is arranged filling7, the inner and outer plies and filling being secured together or quilted by means of eyelets 8 or the equivalents for the purpose. The edges of the inner ply 6 at one side or end of the mattress are connected to the edges of the inner ply of the boxing, and the opposite side or end of the mattress by'means of the straps 9'or the equivalent'secured to the inner ply as indicated at 10 by stitching or in an equivalent manner. These tie members 9 or straps are made of suitable material and in some instances may be made of elastic material it so desired. Generally, it is preferred not to secure the straps together where they overlie one another nor to secure them to the spring construction. Obviously, the straps or members 9 are applied over the faces of the construction prior "to the placing of the filling thereover, although in some instances, if

desired, the same maybe extended over the filling. The edgeportions 13 of the outer ply 5 are secured to the edge portions 12 of the cover sheets-4 =by hemming or otherwise securing the same together as indicated at 14. Corner rolls 15 are formed. about they mattress by stitching through the filling adjacent the cover sheet and ply edge 13 as indicated in 16. The mattress may be tufted as indicated by the tufting loops.l7 or in an equivalent manner.

A mattress constructed as described is not only particularly attractive and durable in appearance, but is economical in construction and, owing to the eyelets, a depression or expansion of the mattress does not cause the boxing to be bulged inwardly or outwardly. The straps 9 tend at all times to keep the boxing under tension and hold the same substantially as shown in Fig. 1.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz' 1. In a mattress of the kind described and in combination, an inner resilient construction provided with an enclosing casing, filling material arranged across opposite faces of said construction at 'the exterior of saidcasing, cover sheets extending across said filling material, a quilted side boxing consisting of a plurality of lies of fabric with filling material arrange therebetween and secured together, and tightly stretched cross bands formin a lattice structure on the opposite faces 0 said construction, the ends-of said bands being fastened to, the adjacent inner ply of said boxing, the edges of the outer ply of the boxing secured to the edges of said cover sheet, stitching extendlng' through the filler and connectin said ply and cover sheet at points spaced ack' from tlie junctures of the cover. sheets and outer P y 2.
