G. A. CONLAN. MATTRESS AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.8| 1920. 1,393,755. Patented Oct. 18, 1921E HIIIIII" IHIHHI Ilin NVNTFM EET UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ARTHUR GONLAN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF f TO ALAN C. THOMPSON, 0F TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
MATTRESS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters atent.
APatented Oct. 18, 1921.
To all whom t may concer-fn: Be it known that I, GEORGE ARTHUR CON- LAN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses andthe like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to mattresses formed of felt or similar material, which has a tendency when in use to become more or less compacted and flattened. Such mattresses sooner or later become more or less flattened out and the result is that the ticking at the edges bulges outwardly spoiling the appearance of the mattress. The shape of the sides of the mattress is further spoiled owing to the common practice of sitting on the edge of the bed.
In the present invention, my Objectis to provide a mattress which will not be materially more expensive than an ordinary felt mattress and in which the edges will remain in shape even after long periods of use.
Iattain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in whichy Figure 1 i's a cross section of a portion of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 a horizontal section of same.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The body of the mattress is formed of fibrous fillingl. This preferably comprises a plurality of layers of felt such as commonly employed in mattress construction. This fibrous each edge of the mattress. v In my mattress, however, I position around the sides of the mattress an edging of coil springs 2 part of the 4pockets 3 of textile fabric,
filling usually extends out to having their .axes normal to the top and bottom surfaces of the mattress. These coil springs may be secured in position in any desired manner. I prefer, however, to locate the springs in a series of connected these pockets being usually formed by transversely stitching a long strip of folded cotton fabric. Around the spring edgin is preferably wrapped a piece of felt fabric 4, as seen particularly in Fig. 1. The mattress is inclosed in the usual ticking 5 and the parts of the mattress are secured together in the ordinary way by suitable tufting 6.
The result of this construction is that the spring edging always tends to extend itself to the limit and thus always keeps the sides of the ticking properly stretched, thus maintaining substantially rectangular shape in section of the edges of the mattress.
As the greater part of the filling of the mattress is of felt or similar material, the mattress in not nearly so expensive as one formed completely of coil sprlngs, While the mattress retains its shape and appearance substantially as Well as such a spring mattress.
lVhat I claim as my invention is l. A mattress comprising a fibrous filling; .an edging of coil springs having their axes normal to the top and bottom surfaces of the mattress; a ticking; and tufting securing the parts of the mattress together.
2. A mattress comprising a fibrous filling; an edging of coil springs secured in a series of connected pockets of textile fabric, the springs having their axes normal to the top and bottom surfaces of the mattress; a ticking; and tufting securing the parts of the mattress together.
Signed at Toronto this 6th b er, 1920.
GEORGE ARTHUR CO'N LAN.
