Description
Patented Bday lg, 193@ earner FASTENER F01?) R-GLLR VNDOW SHADES Application filed November 24, 1928.
This invention relates to a fastener' for roller window shades by which to retain the shade in extended position.
ln its preferred embodiment this invention constitutes a device pivotally secured upon a window sill and by means of which the roller shade may be held in extended position.
Prior to this invention no adequate means has been produced by which to retain a roller window shade in extended position and at the same time retain said shade out of Contact with the window. This invention, as disclosed in the following specification, provides a device which, when not in use, is out of sight beneath the window sill and when in use holds the window shade in a position such that ventilation may be obtained without letting in an appreciable amount of light through the window opening.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a device of this class by which to retain a roller window shade in extended and removed position with relation to the window frame.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a device of this class which, when not in use, may be moved outof sight beneath the window sill to which it is attached.
Other and further advantages of this invention will appear from a consideration of the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window and roller sash showing one modification of this device in position of use;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and shows the extent to which the roller shade is removed from the window sill;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. l is a sectional .view taken on the line 4 4: of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of another modification of this invention; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing and particularly Serial No. 321,594.
wedge shaped opening 17 by which to receive the tassel or cord of the roller shade. From adjacent the pivotal end 1l the edge 19 of this device is provided with a series of wedge shaped openings 21, the open sides of which extend toward the' end 16.
A. screw 22 constitutes the means by which the device is mounted upon the under face of the window sill 23. When it is `desired to use this devicev it is swung outwardly from the position below the sill 23 to a position substantially at'right angles to said sill. Inasmuch as the pivotal point of the device is centrally located with relation to the sill, the outer end 16 will, when moved into position of use7 be substantially in line with the Center of the window. The roller shade may now be drawn downwardly' and the cord or tassel thereof snapped into the outermost opening 17 or any ofthe openings 2l, depending entirely upon the angle at which the operator desires the shade to be located.
The shade securedto the fastener is somewhat out of vertical alignment with the window and as a result ample ventilation may be obtained around the lowermost end of the shade but little or no light will enter the room.
Referring now to Figs. 5 and 6 a slight modihcation of this invention is shown. In this instance the device l() is of consider ably greater length than in the previous modification and is therefore provided with a downwardly extending flange 25 on both longitudinal walls. A wedge shaped opening 26, located in the outer end 2T, provides means for securing the cord or tassel of the roller shade. This device is mounted in a manner similar to that shown above being pivotally secured to the under face of the window sill by means of the screw 22.
Both modifications of this invention are of such dimensions that when moved to potition of rest they are wholly concealed by the overhang of the window sill and when in position of use are substantially centered with respect to the Window whereby to facilitate the securing of the roller shade thereto.
While only two modifications of this invention have been shown and described, applicant does not int-end to be limited thereto since it is obvious that other modifications or adaptations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention as set forth in the following claims.
Having thus set forth my invention what I claim is new and for which I desire protection by Letters Patentis 1. A fastener for roller window shades comprising a pivotally mounted member having a plurality of spaced wedge shaped openings by which to receive and retain the cord of said shade.
2. A fastener for roller window shades comprising an elongated member pivotally mounted upon the under face of a window sill, a plurality of wedge shaped openings formed in one longitudinal wall of said fastener and an angle fiange defining the other longitudinal wall of said fastener.
3. A fastener for roller window shades comprising a metal strip, a flange forming one longitudinal edge to said strip, walls in the other edge of said strip, defining tapered openings, said openings being spaced apart to facilitate securing said shade at various angles to a window upon which it is mounted.
4. A fastener for roller window shades comprising ametal strip, a fiange forming one longitudinal edge to said strip, walls defining a pivot opening in one edge of said strip, walls defining a wedge shaped opening in the other edge of said strip and means, in the edge of said strip opposite said flange, adapted to engage the cord of said shade to permit securing said shade at various angles to a window upon which it is mounted.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
ELLIOTT DEXTER.
