Description

Dec. 31, 1929.. c; s. CAMPBELL ET AL RECORD C'ARD 0R LIKE MEMBER FOR INDEXES OR FILES 'FiledOC'C- 10. 1921 Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED ,STATES PATENT ori-Ice CHARLES S. CAMPBELL AND ALFRED E. HUNT, QF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, AS-
SIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO REMINGTON RANDl INC. OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE RECORD CARD OR LIKE MEMBER FOR INDEXES OR FILES Application filed October 10, 1921. Serial No. 506,819.`
rIhis invention relates to record members for indexes or tiles and more particularly to that class of the latter in which each of the reference lmembers is overlapped by @the succeeding-member and projects a short distance beyond the latte-r so as to disclose `a `small portion of its surface to enable the indicia thereon to be read without the manipulation of the members.
Our invention is particularly applicable .to those indexes or tiles wherein a plurality `.of such reference `members are icanried by or upon a `suitable support and Vusually these members are arranged to slide along suitable guides and to lbeeasily detached .Itromthe sa port and replaced thereupon. In indexes of this type there is a limit `to the number Lof reference members which may be secured upon vthe support at one time and also a ylimit to "the .amount of 'reference ,material which may be placed upon one of .the members. itt is, therefore, often desirable to 'provide .each of the reference members with a relatively largevarea upon which reference tmaterial and indicia ,may kbe placed.
Our invention, therefore, fhas jfor one Y.of its objects the lprovision of .a reference member or Ycard -with which Ythe above advantages, among others, are secured.
Another object of our invention is to Aprovide 'a sectional reference member having `a section adapted lto tbe attached to a Asuitable support and 'a reference-bearing section hinged thereto.
A still further-object of our invention is'to provide a reference member having a pl=urality of .leaves orthe yreception oftherefer.- ence indicia.
Still another object of :our invention is 'to provide `a reference member comprisinga stub `section for :attachment to a suitable support and ya .referencerbearing :section hinged theretojcomprisinga book having a plurality of rleaves.
To these and other ends the invenztiongconsists in the novel vfea-tures and combinations of `parts `to be hereinafter described and claimed. y
IIn 'the accompanying drawings iFig. 1 is a trontelevational view ofa .plu-
rality ot reference members of a modified form attached to a suitable support;
F 1g. 2 is a sectional view of one ot' such members along 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showmg the leaves of the reference section separa-ted;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a plurality of reference `members of slightly modified 'form in `their A,nested relation.;
Fig. 5 is ga sectional view of .a modified ar.- rangementfof the cards.
Fig. 6 is an enlargedsectiOIla-,l viewon 2li-'ne 6-.6 of Fig. 1. i
To illustrate the principles 4of our inven- 1 tion, we have shown a supporting ,member oft the general type shown in Patent No, 1,048,956, granted December 24, 1,912 tolrv ing Fishenwherein a suit-ably mountedguide strip is ,adapted to be vengaged by tongues proJecting from the rear jofeach of the refen ence members. This l1 engitudinally .extend mg 4,guide strip 123 is provided with treeside edgesor tlanges which lmaybe slightly-raised from the body .of the strip and below which are adapted 5to engage the ,tongues 12 of the reference members designated :generally bv the numeral 13. u
lThe reference members consist generally of a -stub portion ateither the upperor lthe lower end rthereof depending upon the position upon which they are placed upon the support and a section for 'the reception ,of
reference material which is hinged to the stub portion.
The reference members are yprovided with stub sections 17 havingthe.depending tongues 18 landhinged to which arebooks .19 comprismg a plurality of 'leaves'. -As shown, these books are composed of a piece-of flexible material, such as paper or the like, folded upon itself to form the two Vsheets 20 and 21. yPreferably the sheets are folded atsuch a ,point that the material of one will extend some distance below the other, so that certain reference material upon one of the-sheets may always be exposed. The book l19 is hinged to the ystub section 17 fby means of a strip of clot-h or'the like 22 rpasted to frthe back oFfeach o-saidportions. This provides a convenient and satisfactory hinged connection between the two sections.
It will be obvious that each of the stub sections is received between the tongues and the body of the adjacent stub section, so that a plurality of these reference members may be supported upon a strip 23 similar to the strip 10 in overlapping nested relation. In such position it is seen that the rear sheet 20 of each of the books entirely covers the front sheet 21 of the preceding book, but leaves a small portion ofthe sheet 20 of the latter book exposed. The edge of the upper sheet 21 of the next to the top book is noted by the dotted line 24 in Fig. l.
If desired, however, the tongues may be cut out at such a distance from the edge of the stub portion of the reference member that the margins of both of the sheets may be left exposed. Such an arrangement is shown in Figs. e and 6. Moreover, it will be obvious that, if desired, a greater number of sheets than the two shown may be provided. In fact the reference book may contain almost any number of sheets desired and still be hinged to the stub section 17 and aplurality of these Sections be arranged in overlapping relation upon the support, as shown in Fig. l.
In either of the arrangements shown in F igs.l l and 4L, it is noted that the edges of no two leaves or cards will coincide and thus the edges of the leaves are presented to the fingers of the user singly and thus may be easily manipulated, as it is never necessary to separate two or more coincident leaves in order to turn one without the other.
Also additional reference material area be secured by simply pasting to the sheets or pages of the book additional slips of paper.
A particularly advantageous feature of the provision of a hinged reference-bearing Section in combination with certain forms of attaching means, of which the one shown is an illustration, resides in the fact that two or more of the cards may be superposed and secured upon the holder in this position, thus greatly increasing the reference bearing or posting surface which may be available upon one holder. This is shown more particularly in Fig. 5 wherein two superimposed cards Y; and c are filed between an outer card a and an inner card cl, the stubs of the superimposed cards b and c being nested between 'the tongues 12 and the stub body of the card a, and the stub of thecard d being nested between the superimposed tongues 12 and the superimposed stub bodies of the cards ZJ and 0.
' The superimposed cards b and c in this arthe two superposed cards b and c which, however, occupy no more space longitudinally upon the -guide l() than a single card. Itis apparent that as the cards are usually nested, as shown in Fig. l, the number of them and therefore the amount of posting surface available is limited by the length of the holder or guide strip 10. The superposition of the cards as shown in Fig. 5, therefore, results in the multiplication of the posting surface available one one holder.
This superposition is, of course, particularly desirable where the hinged sections are provided as this enables the outer card to be n swung over, the user thereby gaining access to the one below.
The cards shown in Figs. 2-4 may also be attached to the guides in superposed position as shown in Figs. Zland 6 and eight posting surfaces are available, requiring, however, no more longitudinal space upon the holder than is normally occupied by one card with two or four posting surfaces;
If desired, more than two cards may be placed upon the holder in superposed position and the number of posting surfaces thereby increased to any extent practicable in View of the material of which the cards are made.A
Vhile we have illustrated and described some preferred forms of our invention, 'it will be understood that the same is not to be limited to the' exact details shown, but is capable of many modiiications and variations which lie within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Vhat we claim is:

2. In an index or file, a reference member comprising a stub sect-ion having tongues cut therefrom for attachment to a support, and a group of leaves hinged to said stub section, a plurality of said reference members being adapted to be superposed whereby the tongue of an outer member will extend through the opening left by the tongue of an inner member to engage a support.
