This invention relates to sideframes for railway car trucks and, more particularly, to improving the strength of connection between said frames and journal boxes integrally formed therewith.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to improve the general appearance of cast metal side frames with integral journal boxes and consolidate in the main core all strengthening ribs or brackets and do away with flared flanges at the junction of the tension member and box.
Another object of my invention is to improve the connection between integral journal boxes and their associated frames by downwardly convoluting the web of the tension member of the frame to provide a hollow bracket between said member and the adjacent side wall of the box, the lower edge of said bracket being preferably curved and the side walls flaring upwardly and outwardly to unite with the remaining portion of said web, said remaining portion being flared outwardly in width to join with the roof of the box, the flanges of the member at the same time being outwardly flared or convoluted to join with the outer edges of said web.
A further object of my invention is to provide a side frame with integral journal boxes, the roofs of said boxes being preferably beveled rearwardly of the tension member, with the web of the tension member forming in effect a continuation of the corresponding beveled portion of said journal box roof, the connection between the tension member, or junction between said tension and compression members, and journal box being reinforced by an integral pending convolution of rounded triangular form extending from the web of the tension member, the flanges of said member being outwardly convoluted or corrugated adjacent the junction with the box and the web being correspondingly extended to join with the lower edges of said flange portions for further rigidifying the connection between the frame and box.

ing ribs or brackets consolidated in the main core, thereby doing away with flared flanges at the junction of the tension member and box, this being accomplished by forming a depending hollow corrugation from the web of the tension member to the side wall of the box and flaring the remaining portions of the tension member web outwardly to the corners of the boxes, the side flanges of said member at the same time being diverted or flared outwardly to the outer edges of said web.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.

Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, there is shown a side frame 1 of the cast type comprising a tension member2 and a compression member 3 united at their ends and to integral journal boxes 4:, only one of which is illustrated. Although only a fragmentary portion of the frame is shown, it will be understood that the construction is an improvement of the type of frame illustrated and described in the Hankins Patent No. 1,637,696 of August 2, 1927, and said frame has a compression member and a tension member spaced at intermediate'portions by struts or bolster guide columns, the tension and compression members converging at their ends and united together and to integral journal boxes. Inasmuch, however, as the portions of the frame, not illustrated, are of well known construction, it is not deemed necessary to show any more than just the novel features, which will be pointed out hereinafter.
In the Hankins patent heretofore referred to, the connection between the tension member and each box was reinforced by a pair of web port-ions spaced from the junction between the web of the tension member and box and from each other, thereby necessitating a separate core. In the present case, the connection between the tension member 2, which is preferably channel shape in cross section and comprises a lower web 5 and,upstanding flanges 6 and the journal box 4:, is reinforced by a bracket 7 of hollow rounded triangular form preferably constructed as a convolution or depending corrugation in the web 5 of the tension member 2. Said bracket 7 is preferably of less width than the web 5 of the tension member, and the lower edge thereofis preferably rounded as indicated at 8 and of approximately semi-circular form, the sides 9 being preferably thinner than the curved portion 8 and flaring outwardly and upwardly to join with the remaining portion 10 of the web 5 of the tension member, which portion is preferably thickened, as illustrated particularly in Figure 2, to compensate for the convolution in said web and continned outwardly and upwardly to oin with the roof 11 of the box preferably at the junction with the inner or adjacent brass lug 12. Said roof attire junction with the thickened web 10 of the tension member is preferably of corresponding thickness as indicated at 13 and tapers outwardly from a maximum to normal width adjacent the other side of the box as shown most clearly in Figure 1.
The journal box is preferably beveled at its upper cornersrearwardly of the tension member or that portion after the union between the tension and compression members, said beveling being preferably produced by sloping the roof of said box downwardly and outwardly from the planes of the inner walls of the brass lugs 12 and 14, said sloping preferably corresponding with the general inclination of the web 5 of the tension member 2 so that said tension member web forms, in effect, a continuation of the sloping portion of the roof at the adjacent side wall of the box.
For further reinforcing the connection between the frame 1 or the tension member 2 thereof and the journal box 4, that portion of the web of the tension member remaining after the formation of the downward corrugation or bracket 7 is preferably flared outwardly to the junction with the roof of the box, the flanges of said tension member at the same time being sloped outwardly or correspondingly convoluted to meet the side 'dges of said web'so that outwardly extending hollow embossments or corrugations are also provided in the flanges of the tension member, said corrugations being greatest adjacent the junction between the tension member and the roof of the box and decreasing or tapering both ways to finally merge into the normal planes of the flanges of said tension member as most clearly illustrated in the drawing, This construction obviates the necessity of external gusset flanges and substitutes outstanding hollow brackets or convolutions which are produced by the main core, thereby avoiding the necessity of separate cores and facilitating manufacture of the frame. The sloping or tapering portion 15 of the tension member or frame flange 6 over the forward or outer portion of the box may correspond generally with the corresponding portion 16 over the inner or rearward portion of the box, except that the forward portion of the box does not have the edges beveled like the rearward portion as shown most clearly in Figure 3. The beveling 17 adjacent the junction between the box and tension member may extend between the flanges 6 of the tension member as well as rearwardly of said member. The construction adjacent the outer side wall of the box may correspond, but in the present embodiment is shown as of somewhat diflerent formation, that is, the
side wall of said box between the sides of the frame extends straight down as indicated at 18 in line with the corresponding wall of the brass lug 14, the remaining walls of said lug sloping upwardly and outwardly as indicated at 19 and 20 respectively to meet the side walls or flanges 6 of the frame below the roof of said box at an elevation preferably corresponding with the intersection between the beveled portion of the box roof and the outer side wall thereof. It will therefore be seen that although the brass lugs 12 and 1 1 are of normally less width than the tension member 2 or the distance between the flanges 6 thereof, yet for increasing the strength of the box and the connection with the frame as well as for improving the appearance, the walls 19 and 20 of the outer brass lugs are flared outwardly and upwardly to merge v with the walls or flanges 6 of the frame, the
corresponding walls of the inner brass lug 12 flaring in a corresponding manner but being of slightly diflerent contour on account of the tension member joining the box at this point, reference being had particularly to Figures 1 and 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have improved the construction, strength and general appearance of cast side frames with integral journal boxes by reinforcing the connection between the tension member and box by means of a bracket formed as an integral depending convolution or corrugation of rounded triangular form in the web of the tension member, the lower edge of said convolution preferably meeting the adjacent wall of the box at the bottom of the corresponding brass lug, said convolution or hollow connecting bracket being prcferably of a width generally less than the width of the tension member and approximating that of the brass lugs, the sides of said bracket flaring upwardly and outwardly from a substantially semicircular lower edge and the brass lugs provided with walls flaring outwardly to approximately or slightly less than the distance between the flanges of the tension member or the side walls of said frame at the junction between the tension and compression members.
The tension member web of either side of the reinforcing bracket or convolution is preferably thickened to compensate for the divergence of the central portion of said web and the roof of the journal box is correspondingly thickened and gradually tapered outwardly to normal thickness adjacent the other side of the box. That portion of the tension member web not downwardlv convoluted is, in addition to being thickened, preferably extended or flared laterally, and the sides or flanges of the member are preferably correspondingly extended. or bulged outwardly to join the outer edges thereof and further increase the strength of connection between the box and frame by providing. in addition to the depending hollow bracket, a pair of outstanding or laterally disposed brackets or convolutions in the sides of the tension member. or that portion of the frame at or adjacent the unction between the tension and compression members, whereby all strengthening ribs or brackets are consolidated in one main core to facilitate the manufacture of the frame. Although a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated and described, it will be understood that modifications may be made therein within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. A truck side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members united together at their ends. a journal box with brass lugs integrally united to each end of the frame, said tension member being ch annel shape in cross section with the web of the channel sloping generally in the direction of the upper inner corner of the adjacent brass lug, the connection between said tension memher and journal box being rigidified by a hollow curved bracket formed as a downward convolution of the web of the tension mem her, said connection being further reinforced by the remaining portions of the tension menr her web being flared outwardly to unite with the corners of the journal boxes, the flanges of said tension member being flared downwardly and outwardly to the outer edges of said flared web portions,
2. A truck side frame comprising a tension member, a journal box with brass lugsim tegrally united to an end of said member, said tension member being channel shape in cross section with the web of the channel sloping generally in the direction of the upper inner corner of the adjacent brass lug, the connection between said tension member and box being strengthened by a hollow bracket depending from the web of the tension memher with the lower edge curved approximately semi-circular in cross section, and the sides flaring outwardly and upwardly to join with the undiverted web portion of the tension member, said portion being flared outwardly beyond the normal planes of the flanges and continued to join with the roof of the box, said flanges being diverted outwardly adjacent their lower edges to join with the outer edges of said web.
3. A truck side frame comprising a tension member, a journal box with brass lugs integrally united to an end of said tension memher, said member being channel shape in cross section, the roof of said journal box being beveled rearwardly of the tension member from the transverse planes of the inner sides of the brass lugs, the web of the tension member joining the roof of the box as a continuation of the corresponding beveled portion, the connection between said tension member and box being reinforced by said tension member being flared in width at the junction with said box, with the flanges of said tension member flaring downwardly and outwardly to the outer edges of said flared portions.
4:. A. truck side frame comprising a tension member, a journal box integrally united to an end of said member, said connection between the tension member and box being rigidified by a downward convolution in the web of the member, the remaining portions of said web being flared outwardly to the adjacent portions of the roof of said box, the flanges of said member being bent outwardly to join with the outer edges of said flared portions and provide hollow convolutions extending outwardly from the sides of the tension member and tapering both ways from the junction between said member and box to gradually merge into the sides of said tension member.
5. A truck side frame comprising integrally formed tension and compression members and journal boxes at the ends of said members the junction between said boxes and frame being reinforced by providing hollow convolutions bulging outwardly from the sides of the tension member at the junctions with the boxes and tapering both ways from said junctions to gradually merge into the sides of said tension member.
6. A truck side frame comprising a tension member formed U shape in cross section with a lower web and upstanding flanges, a journal box integrally connected at an end of said frame, the junction between said frame and journal box being rigidified by a depending hollow convolution in the web of the tension member and laterally extending hollow convolutions in the side walls of said member, said depending convolution extending to the adjacent side walls of the journal box and the laterally extending convolutions joining the roof of the box on the one hand and the outer edges of the tension member web on the other.

A truck side frame comprising a compression member, a tension member, a journal box inte rally united to said members adj acent the junction therebetween, said members being generally channel shape in cross section with flanges merging adjacent the junction with the box, said junction being reinforced by a depending hollow corrugation extending from the web of the tension memher to the adjacent side walls of thebox and laterally diverging hollow corrugations extending from the sides of the flanges of said members to the outer edges of flaring end portions of the tension member web and the adj acent portion of the roof of said box.
8. A truck side frame comprising integrally formed tension and compression members and journal boxes at the ends of said members, the junction between said boxes and frame being reinforced by providing hollow convolutions bulging outwardly from the sides of the tension member at the junctions with the boxes.
9. A truck side frame comprising a tension member formed .U shape in cross section with a lower web and upstanding flanges, a jour- V nal box integrally connected at an end of said frame the junction between said frame and journal box being rigidified by laterally extending hollow convolutions in the side walls of said member, said laterally extending convolutions joining the roof of the box on the one hand and the outer edges of the tension member web on the other.
