This invention relates to an improved valve gear for explosion engines having two rows of V cylinders. According to this in.- vention the valves are arranged almost normally to the axis of the cylinders, so as to be By conveniently choosing the angle of in-- clination of the valves with res ect to the V angle it is possible to operate y one cam the valve gear for each pair of cylinders lying on the same plane normal to the driving shaft. A further advantage is a most convenient shape of explosion chamber which is adapted to increase the engine etiiciency while the spark plug can be arranged in the center thereof. According to this invention the combustion chamber is constituted by a head extension of the cylinder in the form of a rectangular prism, and with regard to the vertical axis of the engine its'inclination is smaller than that of the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Oppositely arranged suction and outlet valves open in said combustion at right-angles to the axis of the latterand alined with regard to each other, so that the axes of the valves of each pair of cylinders meet in a plane of symmetry.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical section of an engine embodying my invention the plane of section of the left hand cylinder being behind andparallel to the plane of section of the right hand cylinder.
1 denotes the compression chamber of the engine cylinders'into which the cones of the valves 2 and 3 are placed opposite each other. The valves 2 and 3 are normally held seated by springs 2', 3' respectively. The
' valves 2 of each pair of cylinders are alternately actuated against the action of the springs 2' by a single cam 4' one rotarycam shaft 4, said cams during the rotation of the latter directly engaging the ends of the stems of the valves 2. The valves 3 of each pair of cylinders are also alternately actuated against the action of their springs by a single cam 4 on the shaft 4 through the medium of rocker-arms '5. The free ends of these rocker-arms directly engage the stems of the valves .3 the other ends of the rocker arms being connected to push rods 6 which pass through the heads of the cylinders and are connected to tappets' 7 mounted in the path of the cam 4 v i The same arrangement can be adopted also in engines having more than one suction and outlet valve for each cylinder. The valves 2 conveniently serve for the outlet and the valves 3 for the inlet. As it appears from the drawing the outlet valves 2 .and suction valves 3 of each cylinder face each other and they move in opposite directions. For the left hand cylinders the outlet valves 2 when opening will move to the left of the figure and the suction valves 3 for opening will move to theright. If desired for cooling or other reasons the opposite arrangement is adopted; it is obvious that the operating means diagrammatically shown on the example described may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
An internal combustion engine of the V-type comprising oppositely inclined cylinders arranged in pairs each having a combustion chamber forming a head extension thereof that with respect to the cylinder axis is less inclined than the corresponding cylinder, oppositely arranged suction and outlet valves opening 'into each combustion chamber at right-angles to the axis of the latter and alined with regard to each other so that the axes of the valves of each pair of cylinders meet in a plane of symmetry, a cam shaft adjacent said plane, a cam on the shaft. for directly engaging the stems of the valves situated on the inner side of each pair of cylinders, rocker arms on the outer side of said cylinders engaging the stems of the valves on said outer side, push rods passing through the cylinder heads operatively connected to the rocker arms, tappets connected to the inner ends of said rods, and a cam on said shaft adapted to actuate the tappets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
