AUXILIARY TOILET SEAT.

This invention relates to improvements in an auxiliary seat for closets.

An important object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary seat which may be readily carried in a traveling case and may be readily positioned upon the usual closet seat for sanitary purposes. 7

A further object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary seat of the above character which is especially adapted for the use of children.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates my improved seat which is in the general configuration of the usual closet seat and comprises two complementary sections 11 and 12, each comprising one-half the seat.

Each of the sections comprises a plurality of rear end segments 13, forward end seg ments 14: and intermediate segments 15 and 16. It is to be noted that this device when constructed for the use of adults may be of the same general dimensions as the common form of closet seat but when constructed for the use of children the body portion is preferably of wider construction to substantially cover the usual seat and permit the central opening being disposed substantially within the conventional seat opening.

The forward end segments 14 are comparatively narrow and extend substantially one-fourth the circumference of the seat. The adjacent abutting edges of these forward segments are provided with a suitable 1826. Serial No. 120,818.

tongue and groove joint. This joint is effected by providing one of the segments with an arcuate groove, as indicated by the reference 17 adapted to snugly receive a tongue 18 upon the other section substantially circular in cross section, providin a joint, the parts of which may be interloc ed by endwise relative movement of the segments and which joint will lock the segments against lateral separation.

The intermediate sections 15 are arcuate in formation and abut the segments 14 and are connected therewith by means of hinges 19. ,These hinges are secured upon the upper side of the segments adjacent the abutting edges and permit folding of these adjacent segments. The intermediate segments 16 are arcuate in configuration and abut the rear edges of the intermediate sections 15 and are connected thereto by means of hinges 20 secured to the lower sides of these segments. These hinges 20 are positioned approximately on the transverse center of the seat.

The continuity of the seat is completed by the provision of the rear end segments 13 substantially wider in construction than the forward end segments having their remote edges abutting the intermediate segments 16 and hingedly secured in engagement there with with a pair of hinges 21 secured on the upper sides of the segments by suitable screws or the like. The adjacent edges of these rear end segments are connected togcther in the same manner as the forward end segments, being provided with an interlocking tongue and groove construction as provided on the first mentioned segments.

It is apparent from the foregoing construction that the half sections of the seat are connected for use by aligning the adjacent edges of the end segments and sliding the tongues formed on two of the segments into the grooves formed on the opposed segments. I consider it desirable to provide a plurality of substantially semicircular lugs 22 constructed of rubber or the like, which are secured to the seat segments 13 and 14 in any desired manner on the bottom thereof and are adapted to contact with the main seat of the closet thereby preventing displacement of the auxiliary seat.

An important feature of the device is the manner of folding or collapsing the sections to permit convenient transportation. When not in use, the seat sections are separated by longitudinal-movement of one section relative to the other disconnecting the tongue and groove joints formed on the adjacent edges of the front and rear end segments. Each section is then folded by swinging the segments and 16 about the central hinge connected to the intermediate segments 15 and 16, as clearl indicated in Figure 3 forming substantia 1y a quadrant of the entire seat. The sections are further ,collapsed by swinging the end segments 13 and 14 outwardly upon the hinges 19 and 21 bringing these segments in engagement with the intermediate segments and forming a pair of compact sections folded as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5.

It is readily apparent that the, two sections when folded in accordance with the previous description may be readily inserted in a small bag or any suitable container for convenient transportation thereof. When it is desired to use the device the segments may be readily swung into aligned position and the end segments joined by sliding the tongue and groove joints in position. Thus it is seen that a very convenient and efficient seat is provided and especially one which.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. An auxiliary te'llet seat including a pair of lateral sections, each section comprising two end segments and two intermediate segments, ahinge connecting the adjacent ends of the intermediate segments of each of the segments to provide for relative folding of the end segments, with relation to their respective intermediate segments, to position with their sides, at which the hinges are located, in contact, and means upon the respective end segments of the two sections for separably connecting the same to each other. 5

2. An auxiliary toilet seat including a pair of lateral sections, each section comprising two end segments and two intermediate segments, a hinge connecting the adjacent ends of the intermediate segments of each section at one side of the segments to provide for relative folding of said segments to position with their said sides in contact, a hinge connecting each intermediate segment of each section with the adjacent end of the respective end segment, at the opposite side of the segments to provide for rela-' tive folding of the end segments, with relation to their respective intermediate seg ments, to position with their sides, at which the hinges are located, in contact, and means upon the respective end segments of the two sections for separably connecting the same to each other, the said means comprising a member upon the edge of one of the said end segments having a longitudinal iuteriorly widened groove therein, and a member upon the end edge of the other said segment having a longitudinal beaded tongue slidably engaging in the said groove.
