This invention relates to saw mill carriages, and particularly to mechanisin{designed to facilitatelthe properpositioning of logs on the carriage, as well as to assist in thetransfer of the logs to and from the same. r V v In the method of sawing-logs, whichis at present, almost invariably used, in orderto permit the least possible waste of material insawing the'log, the latteris so positioned on the'carriag'e asto cause the saw ion-aver through the same in a plane paiallelto'the outside line of the log,insteadof pa allel Since the knees are usually connected rigidly to the setting mechanism, it is necessary to introduce some other means for bringing the small end of thelog up ahead of theface of the knees a distance equal to the amount of taper-in the log. This has usually been accomplished by a crude and cumbersome method offinterposing wooden sp'acerblocks between the t'aceof the knee and the-log, which blocks were of sufiicient thickness to allow for the taperot thelog, This is'an expensive method owing to the amount ottime-required in securinga block ofthe'right thickness, and
also because of thetime and material re- A quired in making these spacer blocks, which are necessarily short lived and therefore required in great numbers. This method is also very dangerous to the operator.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide. animproved ta pering device, preterably power operated, which is movable with respect to the knee,
and by means of which the proper taper may a be quickly and accurately secured by making the proper adjustment either-before or after the log has been rolled on the carriage.

For the sake of illustrating the structure and operation of my invention, I have shown it in connection with a carriage 1 of usual structure having head blocks 2 provided with guideways 3, on which the knee 1 is reeiprocably mounted. In the type of machine shown, this reciprocation is effected through the medium of bevelled gears 5, operated by a power shalt 6.
In this invention, the knee at difiers from the usual construction by being hollow and having a rectangular opening through the front face which forms a guideway T, in which a ram 8 is mounted for reciprocation. This ram is formed at its rear end with a reduced portion 9 extending through the rear face of the knee, and provided at its rear end with a piston 10 having the usual rings 11. The piston operates within a cylinder 12 which is provided with a peripheral flange 13, which is secured to the rear face of the knee by means of bolts 14., or the like. The rear wall of the knee has a depressed portion 15 surrounding the rearwardly extended portion 9 of the ram, and receives suitable packing rings 16, which form an air-tight connection between the knee and cylinder 12. The ram is preferably made hollow, and its inner extremity is closed by a suitable plug 17. (Fig.
The ram 8 is adapted to be projected from the front face of the knee, and for holding it in various positions when used as a tapering device a central web is formed therein and provided with a plurality of stepped notches 18 for engagement by a gravity pawl or stop latch 19, which is pivotally mounted on a pin 20 extending transversely across the rear upper portion of the knee. In order to fix the position of the pawl so as to engage any one of the notches 18, the same is provided with a rearward fiat-faced extension 21, the upper face of which is adapted to be engaged by a cam 22 secured to a rock a detail perspective view of socket for manually operata detail perspective view of shaft 23. For actuating the valve in either direction, one end of the stem 32 pivotally connected to the lower end of an arm secured to one end of a rock shaft 40. which is journaled in a plate -17 secured to the outer end of the cylinder 12. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of an adjustable knee having a longitudinal guideway therethrough, a ram mounted in said guideway, a piston carried by the rear end of the ram, a cylinder in which the piston is guided, and means for selectively introducing fluid pressure into either end of the cylinder and simultaneously exhausting the other end.
In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a. knee having a recess therein, a ram mounted for reciprocation in said recess, a piston secured directly to the rear end of the ram, a cylinder in which the piston is guided, means for selectively introducing fluid pressure into either end of the cylinder and simultaneously exhausting the other end, and adjustable stop mechanism for positively limiting the rearward movement of the ram.
(3. In asaw mill carriage, the combination of a hollow knee, a ram projectable therefrom. means operable by fluid pressure to project the ram to kick off the cant, to hold the same in projected position to act as a buffer, or to retract the ram, and a latch cooperating with the fluid pressure means, to hold the ram in a partly retracted position to act as a taper device.
7. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of an adjustable knee having a longitudinal guideway therethrough, a ram mounted in said guideway, means operable by fluid pressure for projecting or retracting the ram, amanually operable lever pivoted to the knee, and engaging the ram to advance or retract the same in the absence of fluid pressure.
8. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a hollow knee, a ram adapted to be housed therein, means for advancing and retracting the ram, said ram being provided on its upper side with rearwardly facing stepped notches, a gravity pawl mounted above the ram, and adjustable means to limit the movement of the pawl under the influence of gravity to a position in the path of any selected one of said notches, whereby to positively stop the retractive movement of the ram at a predetermined point.
9. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a knee having a guideway, a' ram mounted for reciprocation in the guideway, means for advancing or retracting the rain, said ram being provided with rearwardly tat-ingstepped notches, a gravity pawl pivoted within the knee and having a flat laced portion extending rearwardly l'rom its pivot, a cam rotatably mounted above the rear wardly extending portion of the pawl and having a plurality of flat faces at dill'ereut distances from its axis, and means for adjusting the cam to causeany one of its faces to engage the flat laced portion of the pawl, thereby positioning the pawl in the path of a selected one 01 said notches to limit the rearward movement of the ram.

In a saw mill, carriage, the combination of a hollow knee, a ram mounted for reciprocation therein, means operable by fluid pressure for advancing or retracting the ram, a valve controlling said fluid pressure, and means auton'iatically operable by the ram when fully retracted to restore the valve to neutral position.

In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a guideway, a rain mounted tor re ciprocation therein and formed at its rear end with a piston, a cylinder within which said piston operates, a valve controlling the admission of fluid pressure into either end oi the cylinder, and means operated by the piston when the ram is fully retracted to re store the valve to neutral position.
12. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a guideway having a ram mounted for reciprocation therein, said ram being formed at its rear end with a piston, a cylinder within which the piston operates, a valve controlling the admission of fluid pressure into either end of the cylinder, a lever for operating the valve, and a tappet pin in the end of the cylinder and engageable by the piston when the ram is fully retracted to rock said lever and restore the valve to neutral position.
13. In a saw mill carriage, the combination of a guideway having a ram mounted for reciprocation therein, said ram being formed at its rear end with a piston, a cylinder within which the piston operates, a valve controlling the admission 0t fluid pressure into either end of the cylinder, a lever for operating the valve, and means operated by the piston when the ram is fully retracted to rock said lever and restore the valve to neutral position.
