The present invention relates to an ironing machine, and ismore particularly directed to the construction by which the driven roller is brought into contactwith the stationary ironing member in a manner so as to provide equal pressure between the roller and the ironing member along all portions of contact between these two members. 7 features of construction will be apparent as the description proceeds.

'Referring to thedrawings, 1 indicates a table which is supported by legs 2, four in number, these legs at the front being joined by means. of a cross member 3 and at the side by means of cross members 4. v
Mounted upon th table is an ironing member 6 which has a concave'inner surface 7 and at itsend is' supported by suitable brackets 8 and 8 The ironing member 6 may be heated in any desired manner,-being preferably hollow for the insertion of the heating element, such as a gaspipe 9, as shown in Fig. 3. The roller member is preferably driven by means of gearing, such as indicated at 10 This forming no part of the present invention, further description will not be given.
The opposlte end of the roll is provided with an extending shaft portion 11 which co-operates with a U-shaped arm 12*. The arm at one end is provided with a half-bearing portion 12 in which the shaft 11 is journalled, and this half bearing is provided with a suitable cover 12 which maybeof any construction.

,It will be noted thatthe arm 12 is U- shaped, 'or it maybe described as having a reentrant. opening beneath, the roller member 11, so that this leaves the end of'the roller in what may be termed open ended condition, in that the arm is so fashioned asto permit a shorthand or a collar or something of this character to be run between the roller member and the ironing member at the end of the roll 11, and even if the piece to be ironed in this fashion be fairly long,it will beseen that the end of the piece which is" run ing 15 carried bythe end member 8, and at its opposite end is mounted in a closed col lar 16 which collar is carried by the ironing member 6 or any portion whichis adjacent thereto.-v There is also a shaft 17 upon which the arm12 is mounted. This shaft has a bearing at 18 in the support 8 and at its opposite end it'is also mounted inthe collar As will beseen from Fig. 2, the two shafts 13 and 17 practically abut each other within the collar 16, so that both are supported, but yet both are free to turn inde pendently. p
Upon the shaft 17 there is an arm 19,-and upon the shaft 13 there is an arm 20. vEach of these arms extends rearwardly and there is pivotallyconnected at the end of the arm 19 one end of a link 21, while similarly there "is pivotally connected at the end ofthe arm 20 one end of a link 22. These. link members are fastened to two points of an equaliz-- ing plate or equalizing member 23. This equalizing plate has another. opening which :endof these arms is'a treadle 29.

These pawls are thrown out of engagement by means ofthe'treadle 29', and for this purpose eaeh of the pawls is provided with a lug such as showmat 31, which is adapted to be engaged by the treadle for the purpose of throwing the pawl.
The equalizing member 23 to which reference has before been made has secured thereto oneend of a spring 33 the opposite end of which is convenientlysecured upon: the underside of the table 1, asindicated at 34.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that pressure applied at any portion of the t-readle member 29 will depress this treadle member and will cause a turning movement of the shaft 26 because each of the arms 27 and'28 are secured to this shaft, and therefore depression of eitheror both of these arms will cause rotation of the shaft 26. This will in turn cause the arm 25 to be depressed, and inasmuch as the arm 25 is in substantially the middle portion of the shaft 26 practically equal application of turning movementto the arm 25 will be applied wh'ether the treadle member 29 be depressed at one end or at both ends.
Movement of the arm 29 will move the equalizing member 23 which in turn will exert a pull upon the rods and 22, and this in turn will depress the arms 19 and 20,

Having described my invention, I claim 1. In combination in an ironing machine, a supporting frame, an ironing member, a co-operating roller member, means for moving one of said members toward the other member. comprising independent arms which support the movable member at the opposite ends thereof. a movable actuating member, an equalizing member, means connecting the actuating member with the equalizing memberin the central portion thereof, and means connecting each of said arms with the equalizing member upon opposite sides of its connectlon with the actuating member, and a spring connection between the equalizing member and frame. 7

In combination in an ironing machine, an ironing member and a co-operating roller member, means for moving one of these members toward the other comprising independent arms which support the oppositeends of the movable member, independent shafts upon which each of said arms are I moving one member toward the other comprising arms which support the movable member at the opposite ends thereof, a movable actuating member, a pair of arms to one end of which said actuating member is connected, the opposite ends 01 said arms being mounted on a shaft, an equalizing member, means conneotinga central portion of the equalizing member with said shaft," and means connecting opposite points upon said equalizer with the arms which support the roller member. 1 V

In combination in an ironing machine, an ironing member, a. co-operating roller member, means for moving one member to- Ward the other comprising arms-which support the movable member at the opposite ends thereof, a pair of aligned but independently rotatable shafts, one of said arms'being secured to each of said shafts, another arm secured to each of said shafts,'an equalizing member, rods connecting each of the second mentioned arms with points on the equalizer member which are oppositely disposed with respect to the central portion of the equalizing member, a movable actuating member, arms at theiends of Which said actuating member is mounted, a shaft on which said arms are mounted, a single arm mounted at substantially the central por tion of the last mentioned shaft and connected with a central portion of the equalizing member for the purpose described.
