This invention relates to railway car trucks and, more particularly, to the construction of the side frames and associated spring plank, bolster and spring plates, whereby an additional spring unit may be employed therewith for increasing the capacity of said trucks.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is'an improvement in design of the side frames, spring plank and spring plates, whereby a greater number of springs than norma ly employed may be used without radically changing the construction of thewvarious parts.
An object of my invention is the employment of'an A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs together with an additional spring group or unit spaced outwardly of the center spring of the standard, nest of springs, whereby increased capacity of the truck is secured, the side frames, spring plank and spring plates being modified to a minimum extent for efficiently accomplishing the desired result.
Another object of my invention is the design of side frames, spring plank and associated spring plates for permitting the emplo ment of an additional spring unit with eacii side frame associated with a standard five unit nest of spring whereby increased truck capacity is secured, the spring plank seat portions of the side frames bein so constructed and reinforced by webs or rackets and ribs or flanges that an adequate area sufficiently reinforced is provided for supporting the spring plank and its associated springs, spring lates and bolster. A further ob ect of my invention is the utilization of an additional spring unit of corresponding size with an A. R. A. standard five unit nest of springs positioned on spring plates, and an associated spring plank, bolster and side frames so that the entire group balances about the longitudinal center line of the associated side frame, the standard nest of springs, for that purpose, bein positioned inwardly to allow theadditiona sprin to be outwardly thereof, the associate spring plank being formed with a plurality of bosses at its ends for engaging the outermost springs and limiting s ifting thereof.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of an additional spring unit associated with an A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs for increasing the caparity of car trucks with which employed, Sald additional spring unit being positioned outwardly of the center spring unit of the standard nest of springs and on substantially the transverse center line thereof, the associated spring plates being correspondingly extended to receive the extra spring unit and provided with locatingbosses arranged on the longitudinal center line of gravity for the complete six unit nest of springs, whereby said bosses are adapted for reception in positioning apertures in the associated spring plank and bolster, said spring plank being formed on, the ends thereof with bosses for limiting the outward shifting of said springs and correspondingly lengthened on account of the extra spring, sai complete nest of springs being arranged so that the center of gravity thereof lies on the longitudinal center line of the associated side frame, said spring plank and side frame being formed with apertures for receiving spring. retaining bolts, the aperture in the frame being elongated transversely so that it is adapted for use with either the six unit nest of springs arranged in accordance with my invention or the standard five group nest of springs.
An additional object of my invention is the modification of the side frames of a truck whereby the same are ada ted for use with either the A. R. A. stan ard nest of springs and associated spring plates or with such a nest of springs and an additional outwardly spaced spring group with associated spring plates.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating to the particular arrangement and combination of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is defined by the appended claims:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a car truck and particularly showing the construction of the various members associated with the springs positioned between the tension member of the frame and the truck bolster.

eferring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, a truck side frame 1 is shown fragmentarily and said frame, in the present embodiment, is of integral cast construction embodying a compression member 2, a tension member 3, and bolster guide columns or struts 4 spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members, leaving a bolster or window opening 5 therebetween. The compression member 2, over the bolster opening, is shown substantially channel or inverted U-sliape in cross section, the bolster guide columns are shown as of similar construction at the bolster guiding portions thereof whereas the tension member 3, beneath the bolster opening 5, is illustrated as of box shape in cross section. Said tension member 3, beneath the bolster opening, is referably formed with an upper web 6, a ower web 7, a front or outer web 8 and a rear or inner web 9, said webs 8 and 9 preferably changing from upright webs beyond the bolster opening to outwardly diverging webs extending beneath the bolster opening from the outer edges of the web 7 to the web 6. The web 7 is preferably formed of substantially uniform width but the web 6, in order to form a spring plank seat ortion of ample width, is extended laterally eyond the upper edges of the webs 8 and 9 forming outward or front flange or shelf portions 10 and inward or rear shelf or flange portions 11.
In the embodiment illustrated, the spring plank 12 rests directly on the upper web 6 of the tension member which forms the seating portion therefor and the upper surface of said spring plank seat portion is preferably formed with A. R. A. standard squaring lugs 13 which engage in corresponding apertures 14 in the spring plank for maintaining the desired relation between the spring lank and side frame. The end of the spring plank 12' is preferably formed with a pair of embossments 15 to prevent the associated spring group from outward shifting. The length of the spring plank is preferably slightly greater than the standard spring plank because of the additional spring group or unit with which it is ada ted to be used. As shown most clearly in igures 1 and 2, the spring plank 12 is of channel construction and the web thereof is formed with spring plate locating apertures 16 so positioned that when the spring plank is assembled with the side frame, said apertures shown, in the truck bolster 25.

Positioned on the web of the spring plank 12 is a spring plate 17 formed with locating bosses 18 which en age in the apertures 16 of the spring plan and properly position the spring plate 17 and the associated springs 19. In the embodiment illustrated,the bosses 18 are formed by pressing substantially conical extensions downwardly from the spring plate 17 but it is obvious that they may be of any desired construction. In no cordance with m invention, I preferably employ an A. R. standard five group nest of springs which is positioned directly on the spring plate 17 and properly located with respect thereto by means of upstanding annular flanges or collars 20 which engage the innermost springs 21 of the spring groups or units 19.
Positioned outwardly or forwardly of the center spring unit19 of the standard nest of sprin s, is an additional spring unit or group of springs 22 preferably corresponding in size with the other spring groups or units of the standard nest of springs. In order to accommodate this extra spring unit or group, the spring plate 17 is correspondingly extended, as shown most clearly in Figure 5, and formed with an additional spring locating collar 23. The additional group of springs 22 is preferably spaced with respect to the springs of the standard group in accordance with the spacing between the springs of said group, preferably lies on the transverse center line of the central spring unit or group of springs and is outwardly disposed with respect thereto. The locating bosses 18 are so arranged with respect to the collars 20 and 23 that the springs balance aboutsaid bosses, that is, said bosses preferably lie on the longitudinal center line, of gravity of said springs so that, when engaged in the locating apertures 16 in the spring plank 12, the springs balance about the longitudinal center line of the frame.
The upper spring plate 24. may be constructed identical with the lower spring plate 17 but is reversed in position so that the collars 20 and 23 thereon extend downwardly and engage the central springs 21 and the locating bosses 18 extend upwardly and engage in corresponding apertures, not Referring particularly to Figure 3, it will be seen that because of the sixth spring group or unit 22 necessitating the inward shifting of the standard group of springs, it may be necessary to extend the substantially horizontal spring engaging web or face 26 of the bolster inward to 27. This extension, however, is only for a very small distance, if necessary, because the amount of inward shifting or positioning is small and the bolster may be formed with sufiicient clearance so that no extension will be necessary.
For retaining the spring plates 17 and 24 in the desired assembled relation with'respect to the springs therebetween, the spring locating collars engaging the central spring set or group of the standard nest of springs are preferably formed substantially semispherical in shape and, as indicated most clearly in Figure 3, provided with apertures 28 therethrough for the reception of a retaining bolt or other means 29 extending therebetween.
In order to allow for compression of the springs due to the load on the car, the spring plank 12 is apertured at 30 directly beneath the bolt 29 and the upper web 6 of the tension member of the side frame is formed with an overlapping aperture at 31. In order that the aperture 31 may be adapted tor use either with the spring arrangement.
shown in accordance with my invention or with the standard five unit nest of springs heretofore referred to, it is preferably elongated transversely as shown most clearly in Figures 3 and 4 so as to overlap the center line of the side frame 1 and allow for the reception of a bolt 29 positioned as shown in Figure 3 or for one positioned on the center line of the side frame in accordance with standard construction. There is no use of elongating the aperture 30 in the spring plank 12 to correspond with the aperture 31 in the web 6 of the side frame because we spring plank 12 is not adapted for the reception of the standard five unit nest of springs normally positioned.
For adequately reinforcing the spring plank seat or upper web 6 of the tension member 3 of the side frame for supporting the novel arrangement of springs in atcoruance with my invention, said web 6 is preferably formed andreinforced as most clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. From a consideration of these figures, it will ,be apparent that the front or outer edge of the web 6 is extended in width to a maximum below the outer spring group or unit 22 and directly beneath this unit the extended flange 10 is preferably reinforced and braced with respectto the web 8 by means of a substantially triangular web or bracket portion 32. The inner edge of theweb 6 or the free edge of the flange portion 11 thereof is in creased in width to a maximum directly beneath the two inner spring units or groups 19 and between these groups extends in a straight line at a uniform distance from the center line of the frame, as indicated at 33. Approximately directly beneath said innersprings, the extended flange 11 is preferably reinforced and braced with respect to the web 9 by means of substantially triangular web, or bracket portions 34.
As a further reinforcement for the spring plank seat portion or web 6 of the tension member, a depending rib or flange 35 is preferably formed extending transversely between the side webs 8 and 9 of the tension member and directly beneath the central spring unit of the standard group of springs and, therefore, being in line with the triangular web or bracket 32. Where this rib 35 meets the aperture 31, it is bifurcated and extends around said aperture as a depending reinforcing collar therefor thereby tending to maintain the strength of the tension member adjacent the aperture 31. Beneath the pairs of spring units positioned on either side or longitudinally spaced with respect to the central pair of spring units are transversely extending depending flanges or ribs-36 and 37 depending from the web 6 of the tension member for adequately reinforcing the spring seating portion thereof. From a consideration of Figure 4 particularly, it will be apparent that these flanges or ribs 36 and 37 are in line with the substantially triangular bracket or web portions 34 and extend between the side webs 8 and 9 of the tension member. As will be apparent from a consideration of the drawing, the webs 8 and 9, although preferably upright beyond the spring seating portion of the web 6, are preferably flared upwardly and outwardly to a slight degree so that their upper edges better serve for supporting the loads transferred from the supported s rings. This flaring is accomplished gra ually, as indicated particularly in Figure 4, and reaches a maximum and extends with auniform flare or slope between the flanges or ribs 36 and 37 It will be apparent that, although the aforedescribed reinforcement is especially designed for the six unit group of springs in accordance with my invention, yet it is admirably adapted for supporting the A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs when the same is positioned so that its center of gravity lies on the longitudinal center line of the side frame. I
From the aforegoing disclosure, it will be seen that I have devised a construction which provides for a twenty per cent in- 1 crease in spring capacity without radically changing the construction of the side frame, spring plank and associated bolster. l/Vith said modified side frame and bolster. the A. R. A. standard five group nest o springs with corresponding spring plates and springpIank may be employed interchangeably with the springs, spring plates and spring plank disclosed in accordance with my invention although, of course, there will be slightly more clearance at the bolster where the lower web 26 thereof changes from horizontal to downward sloping position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim 15:.
1. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opening, a standard nest of springs supported by said spring plank seat portion and an additional spring unit located outward of the center spring of said nest, said standard nest being positioned inwardly so that the whole grou balances about the center line of the side rame.
2. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opening, a spring plank positioned on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank above the sprin lank seat portion of the frame and an a dit-ional spring unit positioned outwardly of the center spring unit of the five unit nest, said additional unit being spaced with respect to the other springs corresponding to the spacing between the other springs and the entire group being positioned so that its center of gravity corresponds with the longitudinal, center line of the frame.
3. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a Window opening therebetween, the portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being laterally widened to form a spring plank seat portion, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, an additional spring unit positioned outwardly on the transverse center line of the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the entire group of springs being positioned inwardly so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, a bolster, the corresponding end of which is supported by the springs, and retaining means for said springs serving to place the same under initial tension and acting to properly s ace the springs with respect to each other, the spring plank and bolster.
4. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed witha bolster o ening and a spring plank seat portion underlying said opening, a standard nest of springs supported by means of said spring plank seat portion and an additional spring unit of the same size as the units of the nest of springs positioned outward of said nest of springs on the center line thereof, said combined set of springs being positioned so that its center of gravity lies substantially on the longitudinal center line of the frame.
5. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said gening, a spring plank with its correspong end supported on said spring plank seat portion and in turn supporting a standard nest of springs, and an additional spring unit positioned forwardly of the center spring of the nest of sprin 's, the whole group being shifted rcarwardly so that it balances about the longitudinal center line of the side frame, said spring plank being wardly of the center spring unit of the nest of springs, said additional unit being spaced corresponding with the spacing of the springs of the nest with respect to each other and the entire group being positioned inwardly so that its center of gravity corresponds with the longitudinal center line of the frame, the ends of the spring plank being formed with a pair of bosses positioned outwardly of the outer springs of the standard five unit nest of springs for preventing shifting thereof.
7. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a com ression member, a tension member and bolst r guide columns spacing intermediate portions of the compression and tension members and leaving a Window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being laterally widened to form a spring plank seat portion, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, an additional spring unit positioned outwardly on the transverse center line of the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the ,entire group being arranged so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, a bolster, the corresponding end of which is supported by the springs, spring plates positioned one above and one below said springs and retained by a bolt passing through the plates and throu h the center spring of the standard nest 0 springs, the end of the spring plank bein aperturedlo correspond with the bolt, sai spring plank being formed at its ends with a plurality of bosses adapted to limit outward shifting of the springs.
8. n a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said 0 ning a standard nest of springs supporte by said spring plank seat rtion and an add1- tional sprmg unit positioned outwardly of the center of gravit the center spring of said group, said group being located so that the whole set of springs balances about the longitudinal center line of the frame, spring plates positioned one above and one below said springs and provided with locating bosses on the center line of the frame and adapted for engagement with corresponding apertures in the spring plank and bolster, respectively, for properly locating the spring plates with respect to said plank and bolster.
9. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath the bolster opening, a spring plank positioned on said seat portion of the frame, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank above the spring plank seat portion and an additional spring unit positioned outwardly of the center spring unit of the five unit nest, said additional unit being spaced with respect to the other springs corresponding to the spacing between said other springs, spring plates for said springs,
- said plates being provided with securing means extending therebetween and substantially conical locating bosses arranged to engage in correspondingapertures located on the center line of the frame.
10. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opening being generally box shape in cross section with an upper relativelywide web forming a spring plank seat portion, a lower web narrower than said upper web, webs extending between the outer edges of said lower web and the upper web, a spring plank supported on said u per web, a six unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, said nest of springs being arranged sothat thereof hes on the longitudinal center line of the side frame and, for this purpose, comprising three airs of spring un ts arranged longitudinal y of the frame, the end pairs being positioned inwardly and the intermediate pair being positioned outwardly with respect to the center line of the frame so that the inner spring unit of said pair is arranged substantially central with respect to the springs of the end pairs, the su portin web of the side frame being rein orced or properly supporting said springs by substantially triangular web portions arranged under the inner springs between the upper web and inner web. a substantially triangular web between said upper web and outer web under the outermost spring, and a rib depending from the supporting web of the tension member between the side webs thereof under each pair of spring units whereby the spring plank seat portion of the side frame is adequately reinforced.
11. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening tlierebetween, the portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opemng, being formed generally box shape in cross section with an upper relatively wide web serving as a spring plank seat portion and adapted for supporting a spring plank upon which rests a standard five unit nest of springs with an additional spring positioned outwardly on the transverse center line of the central spring unit of said nest of springs, the upper web of said box section being widened to correspond with the six spring units which it supports and the side webs of the box section, beneath the spring plank seat portion, being formed to d verge upwardly reaching a maximum divergence beneath the location of the supported springs and for a distance beneath said s ring location extending with a uniform vergence, the spring plank seat portion b61115 additionally reinforced by depend ng anges transversely extending approximately under each pair of spring units etween the side webs of the tension member.
12. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring supporting portion beneath said opening, a five unit nest of springs supported by said spring supporting portion of theside frame and arranged as two 1011 tudinallyspaced pairs of units with a fi th unit positioned centrally thereof, and a sixth spring unit positioned substantially on the transverse center line of the fifth unit, arranged outwardly thereof and spaced to correspond with the spacing of the other units, the whole nest of springs being arranged 'so' that the center of gravity thereof lies substantially on the longitudinal center line of the side frame.
18. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said 0 ing, a standard nest of springs 'supporte by said spring plank seat portion and. an additional, spring unit located outward of the center spring of said nest, said standard nest being positioned inwardly so that the whole group balances about the original longitudinal center line of the standard nest of springs,
14. In a car track, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opening being generally box shape in cross section with an n per relatively wide web forming a spring p ank seat portion, a lower web narrower than said upper web, webs extending between the outer edges of said lower web and the upper web, a spring plank supported on said upper web, a s x unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, and comprising three pairs of spring units arranged longitudinally of the frame, the-end pairs being positioned'mwardly and the intermediate pair being positioned outwardly with respect to the center line of the frame so that the inner spring unit of said pair is arranged intermediate the springs o the end pairs.
15. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the ,frame, beneath the window opening, being formed with an upper relatively wide we serving as a spring plank seat portion, said web being formed with an elongated aperture therethrou h for receiving retainin means for the olster springs when sai springs are compressed, said aperture being positioned so that its inner end overlies the longitudinal center line of the frame whereby it is adapted for use with a standard spring plank and nest of springs or with a correspondingly altered spring plank and nest of springs having added thereto an additional spring unit positioned outwardly of the central spring of said nest of springs.
16. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members. leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being formed generally box shape in cross section with an upper relatively wide web serving as a spring plank seat portion, said spring plank seat portion being reinforced for properly sup orting a six unit nest of springs arrang as three pairs of springs longitudinally spaced by a web depending from 'the spring plank seat portion between the side walls of the box section directly beneath each pair of springs and a gusset alined with each web beyond a wall of said box section.
17. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the frame, beneath the window opening, being formed with an upper relatively wide web serving as a spring plank seat portion, said web being formed with an elongated aperture therethrough for receiving retaining means for the bolster springs when said springs are compressed, said a erture being ositloned so that its inner en overlies the ongitudinal center line of the frame whereby it is adapted for use with a standard spring plank and nest of springs or with a correspondingly altered spring plank and nest of springs having added thereto an additional spring unit positioned outwardly of the central spring of said nest of springs, the edges of the spring plank seat portion of the frame at said aperture being reinforced by depending flanges for maintaining the strength of said tension member at the aperture.
