This invention lOld"S to trucks tor railway cars and, more particularly, to the construction of the side frames and associated spring plank, bolster and spring plates, whereby an additional spring unit may be employed therewith for increasing the capacity of said trucks.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is the improvement in design of the side frames, bolster, spring plank and spring plates, whereby a greater number of springs than normally employed may be used without radically changing the construction of the associated parts.
An object of my invention is the employment of an A. A. standard five group nest of springs together with an additional sprint group or unit spaced inwardly of the center spring of the standard nest of springs, whereby increased capacity of the truck is secured. the side frames. bolster, spring plank and spring plates being modified to a minimum extent "for efiiciently accon'iplishing the desired result.
Another object of my invention is the design of side frames, bolster, spring plank and associated spring plates for permitting the en'iployment of an additional spring unit with each side frame associated with an A. A. standard five unit nest of springs, wherebv increased truck capacity is secured, the spring plank seat portions of the side "frames being so constructed andreiniiorced by webs or brackets, ribs and stools or colun'ins, whereby an adequate area sufficiently reinforced is provided for supporting the spring plank and its associated springs, spring plates and bolster.

A still further object or" my invention is the provision of an additional spring unit associated with an A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs for increasing the capacity of car trucks with which employed. said additional spring unit being positioned inwardly of the center spring unit of the standard nest of springs and on substantially the transverse center line thereof, the as-ociated spring plates being correspondingly extended to receive the extra spring uu it and provided with locating bosses arranged on the longitudinal center line of grav. y for the complete six unit nest of springs, whereby said bosses are adapted for reception in positioning apertures of standard location in the associated spring plank, said spring plank being of standard constrnction at the ends thereof but correspondingly lengthened because of the necessary shifting of the standard group of springs so that the center of gravity of the com lete group will correspond with the longituc inal center line or the associated side frame, said spring plank and side frame being formed with apertures for receiving the spring retaining; bolt, said apertures being elongated ransversely of the frame whereby they are adapted toruse with either the six unit nest of springs arranged in accordance with my invention or the A. R. A. standard nest of springs.
An additional object the modification of the side frames, bolster and spring plank of a truck, whereby the same are adapted for use with either the A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs and associated spring plates or with such a nest oi springs and an additional inwardly spaced spring group with associated spring plates.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention relating to the particular arrangement and-construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.

Figure 4 is a plan of the spring plank seat portion of the truck side frame, the position of the springs thereover being indicated diagrammatically by dot and dash lines.
Figure 5 is a top plan of the bottom spring plate and is likewise a bottom plan of the top spring plate.
' Referring to the drawings in-detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters. a truck side frame 1 is shown fragmentarily and said frame, in the presen't embodiment, is of integral cast construction embodying a compression member 2, a tension member 3, and bolster guide columns or struts 4 spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members, leaving a bolster or window opening 5 therebetween. The compression member 2, over the bolster opening. is shown substantially channel or inverted U shape in cross section, the bolster guide columns are shown of similar construction at the bolster guiding portions thereof whereas the tension member 3, beneath the bolster opening 5, is illustrated as of box shape in cross section and formed with an upper web 6, a lower web 7 a front or outer web 8 and a rear or inner web 9, said webs 8 and 9 being upright or substantially vertical and extending between the webs 6 and 7. As will be apparent from a consideration of Figure 3, the webs 8 and 9 join the web 7 at the side edges thereof but the upper web 6, in order to form a spring plank seat portion of ample width, is extended laterally beyond the upper ends of the webs 8 and 9 forming outward or front flange or shelf portions 10 and inward or rear shelf or flange portions 11.
In the embodiment illustrated, the spring plank 12 rests directly on the upper web 6 of the tension member which forms the seating portion therefor and the upper surface of said spring plank seat portion is preferably formed with A. R. A. standard squaring lugs 13 which engage in corresponding apertures 14 in the spring plank for maintaining the desired relation between The end of the spring plank 12 is of standard construction and provided with a regular A. R. A. embossment 15 to prevent the associated spring group from working out. In accordance with my invention, however, the length of the spring plank is slightly greater than the standard spring plank because of the additional spring group or unit which may be used therewith although it is adapted for use with the A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs, if desired. The spring plank 12, as shown most clearly in Figures 1 and 2, is of channel construction and the web thereof is formed with spring plate locating apertures 16 so positioned that when the spring plank is assembled with the side future, said apertures 16 are located on the longitudinal center line thereof.
Positioned on the web of the spring plank 12 is a spring plate 17 formed with locating bosses 18 which engage in the apertures 16 in the spring plank and properly position the spring plate 17 and the associated springs 19. In the embodiment illustrated, the bosses 18 are formed by pressing substantially conical extensions downwardly from the spring plate 17 but it is obvious that they may be of any desired construction. In accordance with my invention, I preferably employ an A. R. A. standard five group nest of springs which is positioned directly on the spring plate 17 and properly located with respect thereto by means of upstanding annular flanges or collars 20 which engage the inne most springs 21 of the spring groups or units 19.
Positioned inwardly of the center spring unit 19 of the standard nest of springs, in the present einbodin'lent, is an additional spring unit or group of springs 22 preferably corresponding in size with the other spring groups or units of the standard nest of springs. In order to accommodate this extra spring unit or group, the spring plate 17 is correspondingly extended, as shown most clearly in Figure 5. and formed with an additional spring locating collar 23. The additional group of springs 22 is preferably spaced with respect to the springsof the standard group in accordance with the spacing between the springs of said group, pref erably lies on the transverse center line of the central group of springs and inwardly disposed with respect thereto. The locating bosses 18 are so arranged with respect to the collars 20 and 2?) that the springs balance about said bosses.- that said bosses preferably lie on the longitudinal center line of gravity of said springs so that. when engaged in the locating apertures 16 in the spring plank 12, the s 'iriugs balance about the longitudinal center line of the frame, either when said'springs are in accordance with my invention, as shown in the drawings. or if they are replaced by a standard live group nest of springs in which the loeating bosses are also on the longitudinal center line of gravity of said springs.
The upper spring plate 24 may be constructed identical with the lower sprgig plate 17 but is reversed in position so that the collars 20 and extend downwardly and engage the inner springs 21 and the locating bosses 18 extend upwardly and engagein corresponding apertures, not shown, in the truck bolster 25. Referring particularly to Figure 3, it will be seen that because of the sixth spring group or unit 22, it is necessary to extend the substantially horizontal spring engaging web or face 26 of the bolster inward as shown at 2'7. This, however, is only done locally so as not to decrease the bolster strength at this point any more than is necessary, the outer sides of the sloping portion 28 of the lower web of the bolster starting to slope at its standard location, as indicated at 29, and the horizontally extended portion 27 of the web 26 being thickened, as indicated, to avoid decreasing the bolster strength.
F or retaining the spring plates 17 and 2-1- in the desired assembled relation with respect to the springs therebetween, the spring locating collars engaging the central spring set or group of the standard nest of springs are preferably formed substantially semispherical in shape and, as indicated most clearly in Figure 3, provided with apertures 30 therethrough for the reception of a retaining, bolt or other means 31 extending therebetween.
Inorder to allow for compression of the springs due to the load of the car, the spring plank 12 is apertured at 32 directly beneath the bolt 31 and the upper web 6 of the ten v sion member of the side frame is correspondingly apertured at 33. In order that the apertures 32 and 33 may be adapted for use either with the spring arrangementshown in accordance with my invention or with the standard five unit nest of. springs heretofore referred to, they are preferably elongated transversely as shown most clearly in Fig ures 3 and 4 so as to overlap the center line of the side frame 1 and alloi' for the reception of a bolt 31 positioned as shown in Fi ure 3 or tor one positioned on the center line of the side frame in accordance with standard construction.
For adequately reinforcing the spring plank seat or upper 'web 6 of the tension member 3 of the side frame with respect to the novel arrangement of springs in accordance with my invention, said web 6 is preferably formed and reinforced as most clearly shown in Figures 3 and i. From a consideration of these figures. it will be apparent that the front edge of the web 6 is extended in width to a maxnnun'i below the two outer spring'groups or units 19 and between these points extends in a straight line at a uniformdistance from the center line of the frame. as indicated at 3%. Approximately directly beneath said outer springs, the extended flange 10 is preferably reinforced and braced with respect to the web 8 by means of substantially triangular web or bracket portions 35. The inner edge of the web 6 or the free ed 'e of the flange portion 11 thereof is incrc: ed in width to a in: ximuin dir ctly beneath the innermost or extra spring unit 22 as indicated at 36 and is there preferably reinforced by a substantially triangular web or bracket 37 extending from the webi) of the tension member.
is a further reinforcement for the spring plank seat portion or web (5 of the tension member, a plurality of columns or stools 38 preferably angular or star shaped in cross section are provided between webs 6 and 7 of the tension member, said stools 38 serving principally for supporting the spring units above, and which, as shown most clearly in Figure 1, are those springs which lie directly inward of the two outermost spring inits. Further spring plank seat reinforcing means, in accordance with the present eml'iodin'ient, comprise the upright webs or ribs 39 a d att) which extend preferably in line with the web 37 and aperture 33 in the web 6 and lie benea h the center spring unit of the standard group of springs and the extra spring unit inwardly positioned theretron'i and, therefore, serve principally for supporting these spring units. It will be apparent that, although the aforedescribed reinforcement is especially designed for the six unit group of springs in accordance with my invention, yet it is adn'iirably adapted for supporting the A. R. A. standard five grroup nest of springs when the same is positioned. so that its longitudinal center line of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame.
From the aforegoing dhclosure, it will be seen. that I have devised a construction which provides for a twenty per cent in crease in spring capacity without radically changing the construction of the side frame, spring plank and associated bolster. Vi ith said modified members, the A. R. A. stand ard live group nest of springs may be em-v ployed interchamreably with the spring arrangement disclosed in accordance with my invention although, of course, there will be slightly more clearance between the sprin plank embossment 15 and the standard live group nest of springs normally positioned than when employing the spring arrangement disclosed in the present application.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
' lqin a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a holster opening" and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opei'n ing, a standard nest of springs supported by said spring plank seat portion of the side frame and an additional spring unit positioned back of the center spring of said group, said standard group being shifted forwardly so that the whole group balances about the longitudinal center line of the side frame.
2. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath the bolster opening, a spring plank positioned on said spring plank seat portion of the frame, a standardfive unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank above the spring plank seat portion of the frame and an additional spring unit positioned inwardly of the center spring unit of the five unit group, said additional unit being spaced with respect to the other springs corresponding to the spacing between said other springs and the entire group being shifted outwardly so that its center of gravity corresponds with the lon gitudinal center line of the frame.
3. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression i'nember, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a Window opening therebetween, the portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being laterally widened to form a spring plank seat portion of ample width, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, an additional. spring unit positioned inwardly on the transverse center line of the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the entire group of springs being shifted outwardly so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, a bolster, the corresponding end of which is supported by the springs, and retaining means for said springs serving to place the same under initial tension andacting to properly space the springs with respect to each other, the spring plank and bolster.
4. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seatportion underlying said opening, a standard nest of springs supported by means of said spring plank seat portion of the frame and an additional spring unit of the same size as the'units of the nest of springs positioned back of the nest of springs on the center line of the group, said combined set of springs being positioned so that its center of gravity substantially coincides with the longitudinal center line of the frame.
5. In'a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opening, a spring plank with its corresponding end supported on said spring plank seat portion and in turn supporting a standard nest of springs, and an additional spring unit positioned back of the center spring of the nest of springs, the whole group being shifti said spring plank being of standard con-i struction except that it is correspondingly longer to allow for the shifting of the group of springs.
6. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath the bolster opening, a spring plank positioned on said seat portion of the frame, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank above the spring plank seat portion of the frame and an additional spring'unit positioned inwardly of the center spring unit of the nest of springs, said additional unit being spaced corresponding with the spacing of the springs of the nest with respect to each other and the entire group being shifted outwardly so'that its center of gravity corresponds with the longitudinal center line of the frame, the ends of the spring plank being of standard construction but the plank being correspondingly lengthened intermediate its ends to correspond with the outward shiftin of the springs whereby it may be used with a standard nest of springs.
7. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with acompression member, a tension member and bolster guide 001- umns spacing intermediate portions of the compression and tension membersand leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being laterally widened to form a spring plank seat portion, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, an additional spring unit positioned inwardlyon the transverse center line of 'the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the entire group being shifted outwardly so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, a bolster, the corresponding end of which is supported by the springs, spring plates positioned one above and one below said springs and retained by a bolt passing through the plates and through the center spiing of the standard nest of springs, the end of the spring plank being apertured to correspond with the bolt, said aperture being elongated toward the longitudinal center line of the frame so that the spring plank may be used with a standard spring arrangement, said spring plank being otherwise of standard construction at its ends but elongated at its intermediate portion to correspond with the outward shifting of the springs.
8. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opening, a standard nest of springs supported by said spring plank seat portion of the side frame and an additional spring unit positioned back of the center spring of said group, said group being shifted forwardly so that the whole set of springs balances about the longitudinal center line of the frame, spring plates positioned one above and one below said springs and provided with substantially conical locating bosses on the center line of the frame and adapted for engagement with apertures of standard location, whereby the spring arrangement may be replaced by a standard group of springs in normal position.
9. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath the bolster opening, a spring plank positioned on said seat portion of the frame, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank above the spring plank seat portion of the frame and an additional spring unit positioned inwardly of the center spring unit of the five unit group, said additional unit being spaced with respect to the other springs corresponding to the spacingbetween said other, springs, spring plates for said springs, said plates being provided with securing means extending therebetween and substantially conical loeating bosses arranged to engage standard apertures on the center line of the frame to make the arrangement interchangeable with standard construction.
10. In a cartruck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being widened to form a so'ring plank seat portion, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank over the seat portion, an additional spring unit positioned inwardly in line with the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the entire group of springs being positioned outwardly with respect to the normal position of a standard five unit nest so that the center of gravity thereof substantially coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, a bolster, the corresponding end of which is supported by the springs, spring plates positioned respectively above and below said springs and provided with spring positioning flanges and means for holding said spring plates in position with respect to said springs, said spring plates being also provided with substantially conical locating bosses arranged for engaging in normally located apertures in the bolster and spring plank, respectively,
whereby the arrangement is interchangeable with the standard arrangement.
11. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leavin a window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the window opening, being widened to form a spring plank seat portion, a spring plank supported on said seat portion, a standard live unit nest of springs supported on said plank, an additional spring unit positioned inwardly on the transverse center line of the central spring of the nest of springs, the entire group of springs being arranged so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame, said spring plank being provided with a standard boss at its outer end for cooperating with the outer springs to prevent outward shifting thereof, said boss being positioned farther from the center of the spring plank in accordance with the changed positioning of the standard nest of springs.
12. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening ther-ebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opening, being generally box shape in cross section with an upper relatively wide web forming a spring plank seat portion, a lower web narrower than said upper web, upright webs extending between the outer edges of said lower web and the upper web, a spring plank supported on said upper web, a six unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, said group of springs being arranged so that the center of gravity thereof coincides with the longitudinal center line of the side frame and, for this purpose, comprising three pairs of spring units arranged longitudinally of the frame, the end pairs being positioned outwardly and the intermediate pair being positioned inwardly with respect to the center line of the frame so that the outer spring unit of said pair is arranged substantially central with respect to the springs of the end pairs, the supporting web of the side frame being reinforced for properly supporting said springs by triangular web portions arranged under the outer springs between the upper web and outer upright web, a triangular web between said upper web and inner upright web under the innermost spring, a stool angular in cross section arranged between upper and low-er webs of the tension memher under the innermost springs of the end pairs of springs, and a plurality of upright transversely extending ribs arranged between said upper and lower webs under the remaining spring unit of the group, whereby the spring plank seat portion of the side frame is adequately reinforced.
13. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening therebetween, the portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opening, being formed generally box shape in cross section with an upper relatively wide web serving as a spring plank seat portion and adapted for supporting a spring plank upon which rests a standard five unit nest of springs with an additional spring positioned inwardly on, the transverse center line of the central spring unit of said nest of springs, the upper web of said box section being widened to correspond with the six spring units which it supports and, for that purpose, the inner edge thereof reaches a maximum width directly under the extra innermost spring of the group and is reinforced directly beneath said spring by upright webs extending from the'inner upright web of the box section, and the outer edge of said upper web is widened to points directly beneath the outermost springs where it extends at uniform width and is reinforced by upright webs extending downwardly from said upper web.
14. In a car truck, in combination, a side' frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, benath. the window opening, being widened to form a spring plank seat portion, a spring plank silpported on said seat portion, a standard five unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, and an additional spring unit positioned inwardly in line with the central spring of the standard nest of springs, the entire group of springs being arranged so that its center of gravity coincides with the longitudii'ial center line of the side frame, a bolster supported by said springs with a substantially horizontal surface formed directly above said springs and corresponding in area with the plan thereof, said horizontal surface being extended locally toward the center of the bolster to allow for the reception of the extra spring unit.
15. In a car truck. in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring supporting portion beneath said openin a five unit nest of springs supported by said spring supporting portion of the side frame and arranged as two longitudinal'ly spaced pairs of units with the fifth unit positioned centrally thereof, and a sixth spring unit. positioned substantiall on the transverse center line of the fifti unit and spaced to correspond with the spacing of the other units, the whole nest of.
springs being arranged so that the center of gravity thereof lies on the longitudinal center line of the side frame.
16. In a car truck, in combination, aside frame formed with a bolster opening and a spring plank seat portion beneath said opening, a standard nest of springs supported by said spring plank seat portion of the side frame and an additional spring unit positioned transversely of the center of said group, said standard group being shifted transversely so that the whole group balances about the original longitudinal center line of the-standard nest of springs.
17. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member and bolster column guides spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening therebetween, that portion of the tension member, beneath the bolster opening. being generally box shape in cross section with an upper relatively Wide web forming a spring plank seat portion, a lower web narrower than said upper web, webs extending between the outer ed es of said lower web and the upper we a spring plank supported on said upper Web, a six unit nest of springs supported on said spring plank, and comprising three pairs of spring units arranged longitudinally of the frame, the end pairs being positioned ontwardly and the intermediate pair being positioned inwardly with respect to the center line of the frame so that the outer spring unit of said pair is arranged intermediate the springs of the end pairs.
18. A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a window opening therebetween, that portion of the frame, beneath the window opening, being formed with an upper web relatively wide to serve as a s ring plank seat portion, said web being ormed, with an elongated aperture for receiving the retaining means for the bolster springs when said springs are compressed, said aperture being positioned so that one end overlaps the longitudinal. center line of the frame whereby it is adapted for use with a standard spring plank and nest of springs or with a correspondingly altered spring plank and nest of springs having added thereto an additional spring unit positioned transversely of the central spring of said nest of springs.
19, A side frame for railway car trucks comprising a compression member, a tension member and bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said compression and tension members and leaving a Window opening therebetween, that portion of the frame, beneath the window opening, being formed with an upper web relatively wide to serve as a spring plank seat portion, said web being formed with standard spring plank squaring lugs on its upper surface and with an elongated aperture for receiving the retaining means for the bolster springs when said springs are compressed, said aperture being positioned so that its inner end overlaps the longitudinal center line of the frame whereby it is adapted for use with a standard spring plank and nest of springs or with a correspondingly altered spring plank and nest of springs having added thereto an additional spring nnit positioned inwardly of the central spring of said nest of springs, the spring plank seat portion of said frame being reinforced for properly supporting either spring arrangement.
20. A spring plate for a six unit spring group formed with a boss adapted to engage within the center spring unit of the five outer spring units of said group, annular spring centering flanges being provided for the other five spring units on said spring plate and spaced substantially conical locating bosses arranged on said plate on substantially the longitudinal center line of gravity of the spring arrangement, whereby said bosses are adapted for engagement in corresponding apertures arranged for standard spring plates.
21. A spring plate for a six unit spring group formed with a boss adapted to engage within the most nearly central spring unit of said group annular spring centering flanges being provided for the other five spring units on said spring plate and spaced locating means arranged on said plate on substantially the longitudinal center line of gravity 5 the spring arrangement, whereby
