The invention relates to mining machines, and more,particularly to mining machines adapted to undercut the coal and to convey away the coal after it is dislodged or broken away from the seam.`
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned through practice with the invention; these objects and advantages being attained and realized through the means, instrumentalities, and combinations pointed out in t-he appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations andv improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referredV to herein and constituting a parthereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to eX- plain the principlesof the invention.

rl`he invention provides a novel and useful machine adapted to make an undercut-l ting, the machine sliding into the undercntting as it is made', and carrying into the tindex-cutting conveying means adapted to underlie the greater part ofthe undercut coal. The undercut coal may then be broken down or suitably dislodged, as desired, subsequently tothe completion of V,the undercutting and, falling upon the conveyor, is delivered outside of the machine.
The machine operating in this manner leaves .it free, or as a matter of choice, to the workman as to the rselection ofthe best means for breakingfdown the coal. .In certain kinds of coal it is a great advantage both in speed ofworking and in` the quality or size of the coal mined to simultaneously break down ak relatively large mass of coal The machine will also operate, where the nature of the coal admits, to break down the coal gradually or piecemeal as the undercntting proceeds, or to permit the coal to sohreak of itself, when it will do so, in any case conveying away the dislodged coal rllhe machine is also vprovided with two cutting fronts, preferably at right angles to each other, and can travel and cut in two or more directions, that is, it will advance perpendicularly into the face of the coal and then along the face fory an indefinite distance, the conveying means being capacitated to convey away the coal in either case.
The machine is of very low or flat con-i struct-ion whereby it can operate in very thin veins or seams and will in all practicable seams have sufficient head room over the machine for its easy and convenient at tendanceand controlby the workman.

In the present machine, the drums 50 and 51 are driven from the motor Ll0, which also drives the cutter chain. A shaft 52 is journaled in bearings 53 and 541 on the machine frame, and fixed on this shaft 52 is a/gear vwheel :35, which gear wheel meshes with the gear wheel l-l on shaft 14. The two winding drums 50 and 51 are fixed to shaft 52 at either end` thereof, and the cables from the j aclzs #t6 and elfi'k are wound upon these drums, respectively. The machine is preferably mounted on a plurality of shoe plates 56, the bottoms of which are round so that the maycl'iine'willy slide readily over the bottoni in any direction. y y

In the embodied form, a transversely arranged. conveyor is arranged at the inside or toward the front of the machine, and in front ofthe motor and driving' mechanism already described, upon `which conveyor' the dislodged coal. falls and whereby it is' passed across ink front of the driving mechanism and then, by. cooperating 'conveying means,
alongside of the driving'mechanism to the rear and to any desired or suitable loading mechanism or devices. l
In such embodied mechanism, an endles conveyor (5 8 rims over an idle roller 69, located at theinner end of the conveyor and `iournaled in the rmachine frame. In the multiple unit or sectional machine, this conveyor extends entirelyacioss its section and discharges on to the longitudinal conveyor located in the other unit or section. At its 'opposite end conveyor G8 passes overa drivingroller 70. This roller is preferably drivenfrom' the common motor Llt).
In the present embodied form, the. shaft 71 of this roller is'journaled inthe machine frame. and is driven through pinions 82 and 83, and shaft T7 from a friction or slip drive 72- having' a pressure spring-73, and a clutch T4: is provided for throwing the conveyor in or out. Shaft T7 is provided withv suitable bearings 75 and 7G.
