ALBERT WITZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WEARING APPAREL. I
Application filed September 13, 1926. Serial No. 135,093.
This invention is an improvement in wearing apparel and is particularly adapted for use in mens bathing suits, swimming trunks, running pants, and may also be used in inensathlet-ic shirts, jerseys and underwear.
The principal feature of the invention is a novel combination crotch gusset and adjustable suspensory strap. 1 will explain the invention as applied to a bathing suit, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, to enable others to readily adapt and use the same, but it is useful in other garments, and I refer to the claims for summaries of the novel features of the invention for which protection is desired.
in said drawings:
Fig. 1 illustrates a bathing suit provided with a novel crotch gusset and suspensory strap in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the crotch portion of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33, Fig. 2. I
Fig. 4 is a detail View illustrating more clearly the construction and adjustment of the combined CIOtCll gusset and suspensory strap.
The bathing suit shown is preferably made out of knitted material, but may be of any other suitable fabric. It has a body portion 1, and a skirt portion 2, which are shown as formed integral; and trousers 3 which are preferably stitched or otherwise securely attached to the body portion at the waist line, as indicated at 3. The suit is shown as sleeveless; and having shoulder straps l and 1 the latter being divided over the shoulder, and the parts thereof being de- Lachahly connected by buttons 1, or other suitable fastening.
The leg members of the trousers may have the usual gusset 4 at the crotch; but within the trousers is a novel combined gusset and suspensory strap 5; which preferably comprises tapered front and rear portions 5, 5 which have their lower end portions 5* and 5 cut triangularly,'to correspond with the front and rear halves of the gusset 4, and side edges of these triangular portions 5*, 5 are preferably stitched to the side'sof the front and rear portions of the gusset 4; and the adjacent parts of the leg portions of the trousers as indicated in the drawings. The parts 5, 5 extend from the triangular portions 5, 5 and are attached together at their sides and together form a double wall thick ness suspensory strap sufliciently long to extend across the crotch within the trousers, and up to the front of and Within the trousers above the crotch to approximately the waist line 3 (see Fig. 3). This stra is shown as provided with a plurality of buttons 5 adapted to be detachably engaged with any of a series of buttomholes 6 in a tape or strip 6 secured within the trousers at the front thereof, extendin from the front center of the waist line own to the front of the gusset 4, said strip 6 being attached at each end to the inside of the trousers, and also attached thereto intermediate each button hole 6", thus enabling the suspensory strap to be adjusted to suit the wearer. The use of the strip 6 obviates the necessity of providing button holes for buttons 5 in the front of the garment, and prevents the buttons 5 from showing from the front of the garment. While I have shown buttons and button holes as the adjustable fastenings for the suspensory strap obviously any other suitable devices may be used to detachably and adjustably connect the end of the suspensory strap 5 to the strip 6 within the trousers. If desired, the suspensory strap may be knitted in the body, and form part of the crotch 'of the garment at the time the garment is made.
The utility and novelty of the construction will be obvious from the drawings.
While the invention is adapted particularly to mens garments as an adjustable suspcnsory strap, the strap serves at the same time, as an adjustable gusset, in that as the strap is tightened by inserting the buttons 5 in the higher button holes 6 shown in the drawings, the effective length of the body portion of the garment is therebyshortened, and the double hickness of material of the strap comprising the parts 5, 5? thereof, sewed together at the edges eliminates the objectionable feature in the appearance of a man wearinga bathing suit when not using one of the ordinary suspensories.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a garment of the character specified, a trousers portion, an inner suspensory strap comprising front and rear portions-having their lower ends connected with the front and rear portions of lhc'seat of the trousers respectively, the upper ends of the strap portions being connected together and adapted to extend upwardly within the trousers,
tions being connected together and adapted to extend upwardly within the trousers, and means for adjustably attaching the upper end of said strap to the front of the garment above the crotch.
3. In a garment of the character specified, a trousers, portion, a vertically disposed strip within the trousers at the front thereof, an inner suspensory strap comprising front and rear portions having their lower ends connected with the front and rear portions of the seat of the trousers respectively, the upper ends of the strap portions being connected together and adapted to extend upwardly within the trousers; and means for adjustabl attaching the upper end of the strap to t 1e strip above'the crotch.
4:. In a garment of the character specified,
a trousers portion having leg members and having a crotch gusset; a vertically disposed strip within the trousers at the front thereof, an inner suspensory strap comprising front and rear portion; having their lower ends connected with the front and rear ends of the gusset respectively, the upper ends of the strap portions being connected together and adapted to extend upwardly within the trousers; and means for adjustably attaching the upper end of the strap to the strip.above the crotcln 5. In a garment of the character specified, a trousers portion having leg members, a crotch gus.:et, a vertically disposed strip within the front of the trousers, a suspensory strap formed of front and rear tapered portions, the lower ends of which are respectively attached to the front and rear of the crotch of the garment adjacent the front and rear portion of the crotch gusset and extending upwardly Within the garment to form the strap, and means for detachably and adjustably attaching the free end of the strap to the strip above the crotch.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature.
ALBERT WITZ.
