Description

Oct. 11 1938. F. ELLINGER I COMBINATION GARMENT Filed April 29, 1957 m N w m TTQRNEY.
Patented Oct. 11, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
.- 2,132,619 I l l COMBINATION V GARMENT Flora. Ellinger, Milwaukee, Wis. Application'April 29, 1937, Serial No. 139,679
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in combination garments, and more particularly to a mans garment wherein an upper garment, as a shirt, carries integral depending portions arranged to form trunks or shorts so that the entire structure provides a unitary shirt and trunk garment.
Heretofore mens shirts have been provided with tail-portions adapted to be tucked into the trousers and entirely independent 'of underwear or inner garments. With this arrangement, wearers engaged in! athletics or work requiring vigorous movements, have been subjected to the annoyance of having the tail portions of the shirts pull out from the trousers.
It is, therefore, one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the above objection by providing a shirt having tail portions which are secured together in a manner soas'to prevent upward shifting or pulling out of the tucked in portions of the shirt.
Another object of the invention is to provide .a shirt having tail portions arranged to form integral trunks with overlapping lateral extensions for securement at the crotch whereby to form, with the shirt proper, a unitary article of wearing apparel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination shirt and trunk structure which is semi-form fitting whereby bulkiness and bunching of portions of the garment is eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination shirt and trunk structure having a fashioned upper shirt portion, fashioned integral lower trunk portions, and adjacent lateral extensions on the latter portions which are adapted. to be secured together in overlapping relationship to form a full crotch area which insures comfort and freedom of movement without undue pull on any portions of the garment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination garment having complementary opening flaps which will maintain their normal closing relationship during wear and require a minimum of buttons or other fastening means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination garment of the character described which is of very simple construction, which is strong and durable, is comfortable to the wearer and convenient to arrange, which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which is well adapted for the purposes set forth.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved combination garment, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalentsthereof. In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all .of the views: Fig. 1 is a view showing the combination garment as arranged and secured on a wearer; Fig. 2.is an enlarged view of the garment with the trunk portions and crotch flaps separated and unsecured; V p g 'f Fig. Bis an enlarged fragmentary view of the lower rear portion of the garment; and V Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View through the front and rear crotch portions of the garment. While the invention has been shown and de. scribed herein as being specifically applied to a particular form of mans shirt, it is not intended to limit the scope by such specific embodiment,
and it should be understood that the improved 20 features are readily applicable generally to other types of garments, sweaters, blouses, and the like.
Referring to the drawing, the shirt illustrated includes the usual body covering front sections 9 25 and I0 having adjacent edge portions adapted to be secured together by suitable means, as buttons ll. Sleeves l2 are attached at opposite upper side portions of the body sections and the top portion of the garment is provided with 30 a collar l3.
The invention resides particularly in the construction of the lower portion of the garment, and the shirt, below the usual waist line, is
formed with a pair of depending leg or trunk 35 portions I4 and I5 which, at their ends, are of circular or tubular formation. Somewhat above the lower ends of the trunk portions and at the inner side of each of the same, there are a pair of complementary lateral extensions or plackets 40 I6 and H. Each of said plackets is of looped formation and the upper end of the rear extent of the placket I6 joins the upper end of the rear of the shirt body 22 at about the waist line in underlapping relation to the upper end of the 45 rear extent of the placket I! which joins the rear of the shirt body at the same place.
As is shown most clearly in Fig. 2, the front extent of the placket l6 terminates at its upper end integrally with the adjacent portion of the 50 placket or extension l6, and the parts are re- 55 leasably secured in this relationship by a minimum of fastening means which, in the present exemplification, includes an upper front button l8 and a lower button IS on the front extent of the placket I6 adapted to pass through button holes 2| on the placket l1, and the rear portions of said plackets may be held in position by a rear button 25. Normally, said overlapping parts are arranged as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 and provide for a closed crotch area, both forwardly and rearwardly, whichhas'suificient fullness to prevent binding and which is actually segregated from the trunk portions. By release ing one or more of the fastening means, said plackets may be spread and disengaged, yboth forwardly and rearwardly, as in Fig. 2.
and about at the waist line carries an elastic strap or belt 23. This belt is of sufiicient length to engage the rear and sides of the waistof the wearer and serves to hold the shirt body to the wearer and retards upward shifting of the same. The belt is removably held to the interior of the rear of the shirt body by oppositely disposed buttons 24.
In use, the shirt is donned by opening the buttons H on the shirt body front sections andthe wearerthen inserts his legs into the trunks l4 and I5 and thereafter inserts his arms into the shirt sleeves and then secures the shirt sections together in the usual manner. When the improved garment is worn and secured as described and shown, it is obvious that in addition to the shirt or upper garment member, integral lower trunks are provided which serve as a lower undergarment. This garment is especially advantageous for workmen or persons who move and exercise considerably, as the danger of the shirt pulling out of the trousers at the waist is entirely eliminated. The garment maintains an attractive appearance and has no undue bulkinessfibut does provide for comfort and eliminates binding at the'crotch. Also, the trunk plackets are arranged so as to normally remain in closed, overlapping position, and a minimum of fastening means therefor are required. The combination garment is inexpensive to manufacture, is of simple and novel'construction, and is well adapted for the purposes set forth.
What is claimed as the invention is:-
A combination garment of, woven inelastic material, comprising a top, outer-wear member of'jacket-like structure with the edges of the front sections 'meeting in overlapping relationv I v ship, a line of securing means for said over- The rear of the shirt body on its inner surface lapping edges, an elastic belt detachably mounted within the rear and side portions of said top member adjacent the waist line thereof, separated trunk sections for inner wear integral with and depending from said top member, a crotch placket secured to an inner upper side portion of each trunk section, said'plackets being secured at their rear upper ends to a common portion of the rear of the top member adjacent its junction with the trunk sections and each placket being secured at its upper front end'to separated portions of the front of the top member, the major portions of said plackets extending in looped overlapping relationship between said trunk sections, and pairs of securing means, laterally offset to one side of the line of securing means for the top member, for releasably holding said plackets together in closed overlapping condition, said belt contracting the lower rear portion of the garment and aiding in maintaining the rear portions of the plackets in closed condition.
