lily invention consists in the novel construction ot the chain and connected parts and in the relation of the chain and con nected parts to Jghe pipe when in use whereby the tool is cheap to manufacture and eilicieu't in use. y
ln the dre-Wines forming' a part ot this application Fig. l is a side elevation, partly broken, showing my Wrench positioned on on a pipe; Fig'. 2 is an 'enlarged plan of the latch portion of the chain; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-'3 'ot' Fig. 1; Fig. 4 isa side vieuv of a grip link; Fig. :-5 is la side view of a chain link; Figs. 6 and 7 are side views of latch links; and Fig'. 8 is a side view of a stop member.
leferrin tothe drawings, the chain' `that forms the principalportion oi my Wrench is composed of links 10 havingl holes 11 in the ends thereof in which bolts 12 are received that hold the links together to' form the' chain portion of. the Wrench.l O'n the edge of each link which contactsr livith pipe 15 are tivo lugs 14, which lugs e1`- gage ythe pipe Whenthe Wrench is in use; rllhe links at one end are connected to grip' links 15 by bolts 16;. Links 15 are connected to theelottedl head 17a of lever 17 by bolt 18, The links 10` at the other en'd are connected to latch links 19 by bolt 2'0". Links 191 on' the edge that contacts vvith the' pipe have two' lugs 2l. Vand Ain the other edge have recesses 2Q' and 28 one' of which the lock bar is receved ywhen the Wrench is positioned on a pipe. Links 19 also have handle' lugs 25 to which #thev side members Q6 of the handle are riveted. Meinbers 26" are' connected by bar 27 ivhich is gripped when the chai-n' is positioned'V on orY t en ott a pipe. Conn'ec'torfb'ars 2811i: one ond are connected bjr bolt 29 with the nose At the other end bars 2S are connected to latch links 3l `which have lugs 32 on the edge thereof which contacts 'with the pipe. Links 31 have holes 33 and 54 '.i the base thereof. A bolt 35 passes through holes 38 and through holes in the ends of the connector bars thereby hingedly connectimg` the parts. A lock member cornprisinfr side n'iernbers 36 and handle bar 37 and locl7 bar 3S and stop bar 39 is connected to links 31 bj; bolt 40 which passes through holes in side members 36' and through holes 84 of links 31. Stop bar 39 is mounted in members Bti and passes through apertures 41 in links 31. Links 31 are provided with recesses 42 in Whiclrbar 38 is received when the Wrench is positioned on a pipe. Links 31 have springs 44 t'vhic'h springsbear upon bar 38 and hold it from accidentally coming out of the recesses in links 19 and 31 when the ivrencli is positioned on a pipe. Lever 17 has 'in the outer eiid a recess 45 in which is rece' 'fed the operating cabi@ not showin ivhich recess .isclose'd by a sliding bolt 4G when the Wrench is iii use' to prevent the cable from disengagingt from the lever. Bolt 46V slides iii a bearing 47. Stop members 48 may be provided to` prevent the chain fron opening t' far when in use.
In the manufacture of the ivieiich the' chain links and latch links and links and connector bars are tiine'd preferably by stamping the Vparts out olf hea-v v shet or bar steel and the head and nose ot lever 17 is slotted coiresp'oiidirglly to alternate With the connector bars and grip links.
ln the drawings l have illustrated a' Wrench adapted for use on 'tivo sizes of pipe.V When recesses 22 and 42 are in rgiister the Wrench titsY upon the lark-fier si7'e` of pipe. lWhen recesses 23 and 42 are in register, the Wrench lits upon smaller size of pipe; Bjr' providing each of the various parts with tivo lugs on the edges which conta'ct with the pi'pe ivhen the Wrench is" in use thereon. all dang'r or" deforining` 'the pipe is avoided. Bv p'u'ttwng` in' chair-r lin-ks between the connector ba s and the'I latch links the sii/.e of the Wrench can be increased. The Wrench is used in the Well knovn manner et' using" chain' Wrenches on hC-hw" A" pl piel lt Will be seen that ivhat l terni` links', latch links, and connector bars vir lj.' comprise a chain 'of detachable parte. dev :achably secured together by the lock bars, and that one end otA the chain is secured to the nose of the operating lever and 'the other to the head ot the lever at a point below the plane that aasses through the center ot the pipe When the Wrench is positioned for use and that both oli said points of attachment are on the same side of the plane and that When a pull is exerted on the operating lever that end of the chain that is secured to the iead is forced against the pipe and becomes the -fulcrum, While the nose tightens the chain on the pipe. As the fulcrum point is below the center it can not slip back and the action of the lever on the chain is to causo leu Nfl
all parts thereof to more tightly engage the pipe at all points.
