WRENCH;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed August 20, 1918. Serial No. 250,698.
wrenches and it'is' .the principal object of the invention to provide a novel form of wrench of the handle operated type whereby when the handle thereof is rocked, the jaws will be moved to positively engage an article arranged therebetween.
It is also an object of the invention to i provide a wrench having the jaws thereof arranged to permit adjustment of the same tov engage objects differing in size upon movement of the handle thereof.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and the manner of its application may be readily under stood by those skilled in the art, we have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved wrench,
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the movable jaw and rack.
Having more particular reference tothe drawmgs, 1n connection wlth WlllCll llke reference characters Wlll deslgnate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the head of the improved wrench, the same being formed with a recessed portion for receiving one end, of a handle 2 therein, said end of the handle being formed with a segmental pinion 3 and having pivotal connection with the head by same and through adjacent portions of said head 1. Carried adjacent one end of the headl is an immovable jaw 5, the inner surface of which is serrated as at 6 for an obvious purpose, while an opening is formed therein and communicates with the recessedportion in the head 1 to provide a suitable way for the rack element, to be presently described.
Slidable in the above mentioned way is a rack element 7 the outer surface of which is serrated as at 8 while one end of the same carries a jaw 9 corresponding to the jaw 5 having its inner surface serrated as at 10. In this connection, it is to be noted that the teeth formed on the under side of the rack normally mesh with the. pinion 3 and as a consequence, when said handle 2 is rocked sliding movement will be imparted to the rack and to the jaw 9 carried thereby.
It is to be noted that the rack element 7 is provided with laterally disposed ribs 11 adapted for reception in corresponding grooves formed in the way arranged in the head of the wrench.- In this manner, longitudinal movement of the rack and the jaw carried thereby with relation to the head of the wrench will be positively prevented, thus allowing the wrench to properly function at all times.
In using our improved wrench, to engage an object arranged between the jaws 5 and 9, it is only necessary to rock the handle 2, therebyyrotating the pinion 3 and causing the rack 7 to be moved in a direction to engage the movablejaw 9 with the object, thus efiectually securing said object between the several jaws. Obviously, we are enabled to securely grip an object arranged between the several jaws, since the greater the pressure applied to the handle 2 the greater the grip of the jaws on said object. Hence, slipping or accidental disengagement of the wrench with the object will be materially lessened. When the wrench is in engagement with a pipe or other similar article the teeth 8 will engage this pipe and assist in preventing slipping of the pipe.
Manifestly, the construction is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of our claim, we consider within the spirit of our invention.
We claim:
A wrench comprising a substantially segmental shaped head, a stationary jaw carried by the head, a rack bar movable through the'head in a path normal to the stationary jaw, a movable jaw formed on the .slidable rackmbar for coaetion with the --head and having stationary jaw, both of said jaws being in with the rackb'ar; 7 V parallel relation to each other and having In testimony whereof, e affix our signa- 10 their inner gripp ing faces outwardly eont ures hereto. 5 verging, rack teeth formed on said faces HARVEY DABNEY.
