PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL NACHTIGAL, OF HI BBING, MINNESOTA.
oak ornunn.
Application filed June 29, 1925. Serial No. 40,427.
My invention is a combination can and bottle opener, and its principal object is to provide a device which can be used for either opening a can or tearing a bottle cap from a bottle.
A further object of the invention is to provide an implement of this character which can be readily adjusted to cut a can top of various diameters and which will cut the can top in a quick and efiicientmanner.
Still another object of the invention 1s to provide a combined can and bottle-cap remover including a shank provided with a slidable element which is so constructed as to either cut the can or disengage a bottle cap from abottle. With the preceding and other objects and advantages 1n mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions,and arrangements'of parts and operations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein: I
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device associated with a can, the can being shown in broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is'a side elevation of the device used as a bottle-ca remover;
gig. 4 is an en elevation of the device; an
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the cutter and bottle-cap engaging hook embodied in the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein corresponding characters of reference in' dicate corresponding'parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a shank provided with a handle 6 arranged across one end and a can piercing element 7 at its opposite end. A novel cutting blade and bottle-cap engaging hook is provided 51a cap as shown in Fig. 3.
and includes a rectangular sleeve 10 slidably arranged on the shank 5 and having one end formed with aplurality oflaterally extending fingers which are arranged in cruciform relation. One pair ofthese finrs 11 are L-shaped in cross-sectionas s own in Fig. 5, while the uppermost finer terminates in a lift 12 been age a boten it is desired to remove a bottle cap the handle 5 is placed in position as shown in Fig. 3 with the lift 12 engaged beneath the cap and u on ward end of the sleeve 10 by the ends of the L-shaped in cross-section fingers 11.
In the use of the device as a can opener, the element 7 is pierced through the center of the can top and the cutter 13 arranged to engage the can at the desired oint. This disposes the lower finger 11 against the side of the can thereby holding the knife cutter against displacement while the device is being operated.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, 'I desire to have it understood that changes in the construction and arrangement of parts rocking of the handle the cap will be li ed may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:
A can opener of the character described comprising a shank, a sleeve slidably mounted thereon, a pair of laterall gers extending from said sleeve, '9. finger depending from said sleeve, a knife having a shank disposed between the sleeve and the shank first mentioned, and said fingers first mentioned engaging the knife to space the same from said sleeve finger second mentioned, an upstanding flange formed on the shank of the knife and engaging the rear edge of the sleeve to associate said knife withsaid sleeve so that they may be moved ture, DANIEL NAOHTIGAL.
