Description
Dec. 21,1926. 1,611,606
F. .1. POPE HYDRANT THAWING DEVI GE Filed Feb: 10, 1925 Patented Dec. 21, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK JOSEPH Pol E, OF KITCHENER, ONTARIO, CANADA.
f-IYDR-ALTT TIIAVJZ1-TG DEVICE.
My invention relates to iniprowineuts in l'iydrant. thawing ClEVlt and the object (it the invention is to devise a simple and ottertive means for thawing out hydrants should they become frozen without the necessity of having to use cuinhersonie apparatus as is at present the case.
A further object to devise an. electric heating element which can he attached to the cap of the hydrantspout and which will tend into the air chamber in the l I all as hereinafter more particularly dercjhcd and illustrated. in the accompanying; drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents an elevational view of the upper portion of a hydrant partly in section showing my device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through a hydrant spout cap showing my heating element applied thereto, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view thereol.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the difierent views.
1 is the hydrant and 2 is the air chamber therein. 3 is one of the hydrant spouts. 4 is a spout cap provided with a central orifice 5 through which extends the holder 6 upon which is mounted my electric heating elcment 7, aid holder 6 being provider with a plug 8 connected by the wires 9 with any electric light circuit.
The holder 6 is provided with an interin-cdiate shoulder 9 which is adapted to engage a shoulder 10 on the ring 11 which is adapted to extend over the holder and to he Serial No. Q
secured to the inner lace oi the cap end by means of the screws 12.
lVhen a hydrant is trozeu a spout cap provided with my heating element is screwed onto the spout 3 in place of the ordinary cap and the wires 9 connect-ed to any suitable electric light circuit. Thus the air chainher and the entire interior ot the hydrant l is heated with the result that any ice around the valve of the hydrant is thawed out.
From the above description it will he apparent that I have devised a simple and effective means for thawing out hydrants which will he exceedingly effective in use and which can be readily carried from hydrant to hydrant. Moreover. I have constructed a device which will entirely do away with the cumbersome apparatus at present in use for this purpose.
hat 1 claim as my invention is:-
A device for thawing hydrants cornpris ing in combination, an externally threaded hydrant spout a cap internally threaded and screwed onto the externally threaded spout of the hydrant. a horizontally disposed in wardly extending; electric heating element, a holder for the electric heating element tending through the cap end and having a shoulder disposed interinediately ot its length, a ring extending around the holder 65 and having an in 'ardly extendin portion engaging the shoulder on the holder, and means for securing the ring to the cap.
