HAND SHEARS.

This invention relates to an improved hand shears for cutting sheet material, especially sheet metal. 7
It is well known that in cutting shee metal with the ordinary hand shears, or tinsmans snippers where the two cutter le-' vers are pivoted together, that after the first cut has been made it is very diflicult to advance the shears and make the succeeding cuts. The sheet metal tends to curl up and interfere with the forward adjustment of the hand shears necessary before a new out can be made.
The device of this invention is easily manipulated to cut sheet metal in strips or comparatively narrow sheets, such as are used for flashing and other purposes.
To these ends the invention consists in a hand shears such as hereinafter described in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 5 is a frame comprising an elongated base 6. 7 is a cylindrical 'port-ion and 8 is a standard which connects the front ends of the base 6 and 7 together. A cutter blade 9 is fastened to the front end of the base 6, and extends transversely thereof, said base being provided with a slot 10 extending longitudinally thereof from the front end of the base adjacent to the upper edge of said cutter blade 9. and terminating adjacent the rear end of said base 6. A cutter blade slide 11 is mounted tov be reciprocated in ways 12 provided in the front of the standard 8 and has fastened thereto a cutter blade 13 adjacent to the cutter. blade 9 and adapted to. co-act therewith to sever sheet material inserted between the edges of the cutter blades 9 and 13, and projecting into the slot 10.
A reciprocatory motion is imparted to the slide 11 by a handle lever 14 which is pivot ed to a stud 15 on a bracket 16. The pivotal stud 15 consists of two cylindrical portions 24, an intermediate portion 25eccentric to the cylindrical portions 24, a head 26 and a screw-threaded portion 27 concentric with the cylindrical portions 24. The head 26 is provided with a screw driver slot 26 and with oppositely disposed notches 28 and 29 in its periphery. A nut 30 has screwthreaded engagen'ient with the screw-threaded portion 27 of the stud 15 and a locking pin 31 is inserted in the bracket 16. By removing the pin 31 and by rotating the stud 180 by means of the head 26, the notch 29 may be brought into position to have the pin 31' inserted therein, thus the pivot, or
intermediate portion 25 of the stud 15 may be rotated and locked in position to bring it standard 8 and that the pin 11 forms a part .of the slide 11 so that the slide 11 may be moved by the lever 14 engaging the same.
The lever lt is positioned in the space between the handle 7 and the base 6. A stop screw 19 has screw-threaded engagement with a bracket 20 which is rigidlyfastened to the frame 6 at the upper end of the standard 8. The upper end ofthe cutter slide 11 abuts against the screw 19 when it is moved to its uppermost position by a spring 21 interposed between the handle 7 and the handle 14.
An arm 22 on thestandard 8 projects longitudinally of the cutter blades 9 and 13 adjacent to the cutter blade 13 and with its lower face approximately flush with the upper side of the slot 10, said arm constituting a. stripper andoperating to prevent the sheet metalv from moving upwardly or curling when the cutter blade is 'moved upwardly.
The object of the stop screw 19 is to compensate for any change in the relative position of the cuttin edge of the cutter 13 relatively to the cutting edge of the cutter blade 9 caused by the grinding and sharpen- 7 screw 19.
ing of saidf cutter blades, it being evident that the cutting edges of the two cutters may always be located in the same relative positions when the cutter blade 13 is inits uppermost position It will be seen that by adjusting the slide 11 and its cutter blade 13 to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the shears cannot be advanced to a suliicient extent when a new cut is about tobe made to allow the portion of the metal which has not been severed to project beyond the rear ends ofthe cutter blades, or the right-hand ends of the cutter blades as viewed in Fig. 2, thus the cut made by the shears will be continuous and the two parts of the metal being out will be entirely severed from each other. The bracket 16 being made adjustable on the standard 8, renders it possible to always position the .pivot so that the handle 14, when in its be moved upwardly at its rear encland thus prevent said lever from being moved toward the handle 7 during the cutting operacan to a su flicient extent to cause'the cutter blades to make a full length cut.
The general operation of the shears is as follows :Assumingthe parts to be in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 2, .a
piece of sheet metal 28 shown in section in ig.2 is inserted betweenthe cutting. edges of thecutter blades 9 and13 andprojects into the slot 10 to an extent equal tothe width of the strip which it is desired to'cut from the main piece of sheet metal, The user of the tool grips the handles 14 and 7 with one hand and causes the handle lever 14 to move toward the handle portion 7 of the frame. The handle lever 14 thusbeing tipped upon its pivot15 causes the cutter acting with the cutter blade 9 causes the sheet metal 23 to be severed for ajlength approximately equal to the cutting edges of said cutter blades 13 and 9. Upon releasing thepressure upon the lever 14, the .same
will be carried. back to the position illustr'ated'in Fig. 1 by the spring 21, thus causing the cutter blade slide and its outter blade 13 tofmove upwardly until the up per end of the cutter slide 11 abuts against the. lower end of the stop screw 19.
The tool'isnow moved longitudinally of the out which has been made, that is, longitudinally of the cutter blades 9 and 13, until the forward end of the out which has just been made is brought approximately to the rear ends of the blades 9 and 13,01 the right hand ends of said blades as viewed in Fig. 2 and the operation just described is again repeated. by adjusting the stop This operation is continued until one piece of the metal has been severed from the remainder. During these successive cutting operations it will be-seen that when the cut ter blade 13 is moved upwardly, the metal, being severed, cannot follow it on account of the stripper arm 22 whichbearsagainst that portion of the metal which is being severed from the main piece of metal.
I claim:

A'hand shears having, in combination, a frame comprising an elongated base, a handle portion spaced apart therefrom, and a standard connecting the front ends ofsaid to the front endof said base and extending transversely thereof, said base being provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof from its front end adjacent the upbase and handle portion, a cutter blade fast' per edge of said cutterblade, a cutter slid-e slidably mounted in the front'of said standard, and embodying therein a cutter blade adjacent said first-named cutter blade, a
bracket adjustably mounted on said standard and a lever pivoted to said bracket and adapted to engage said cutter blade slide whereby a reciprocatory motion may be im parted to saidslide and its cutter blade to sever a piece of sheet material inserted between said cutter blades and projecting into said slot. A hand shears having, in combination, a frame comprising an elongated base, a handle portion spaced apart therefrom, and a standard connecting the front ends of said base and handle portion, a cutter blade fast to the front end of said base and extending transversely thereof, said base being pro,- vided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof from its front end adjacent the upper edge of said cutter blade, acutter blade slide slidably mounted in the front of said standard, a cutter blade fast to said slide adjacent said first-named cutter blade, a pivot mounted on said standard and adjustable toward and away from said slide, and a lever mounted on said pivot and positioned between said handle and said base, and engaging said cutter blade slide whereby a reciprocatory motion may be imparted to said slide and its cutter blade to sever a piece of sheet material inserted between. said cutter blades and projecing into said slot.
5. A hand shears having, in combination, a frame comprising an elongated base, a handle portion spaced apart therefrom, and a standard connecting the front ends of said base and handle portion, a cutter blade fast to the front end of said base and extending transversely thereof, said base being provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof from its front end adjacent the upper edge of said cutter blade, a cutter blade slide slidably mounted in the front of said standard, a cutter blade fast to said slide adjacent said first-named cutter blade, an eccentric stud constituting a pivot mounted on said standard, and a lever mounted on said pivot and positioned between said handle and said base, and engaging said cutter blade slide whereby a reciprocatory motion may be imparted to saidslide and its cutter blade to sever a piece of sheet material inserted between said cutter blades and pro j ecting into said slot.

A. hand shears having, in combination, a frame comprising an elongated base, a handle portion spaced apart therefrom, and a standard connecting the front ends of said base and handle portion, a cutter blade fast to the front end. of said base and extending transversely thereof, said base being provided with a slot extending longitudinally thereof from its front end adjacent the upper edge of said cutter blade, a cutter blade slide slidably mounted in the front of said standard, a cutter blade fast to said slide adjacent said first-named cutter blade, a pivot mounted on said standard and adjustable in different directions thereon, and a lever mounted upon said pivot and positioned between said handle and said base, and engaging said cutter blade slide whereby a reciprocatory motion may be imparted to said slide and its cutter blade to sever a piece of sheet material inserted between said cutter blades and projecting into said slot.
