PETER KARSEBOOM, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
SCREW CLAMP.
Application filed February 2'1, 1924. Serial No. 694,337.
This invention relates to improvements in screw clamps, and its primary object is the provision of a novel device of this character by means of which angularly related pieces of work may be firmly held together while their glue joint is drying or while they. are being nailed together.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter fully described and claimed, and il lustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the manner in which my improved clamp is adapted to be used to hold two angularly related pieces of work together,
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the pressure head of the clamp,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the yoke of the clamp,
Figure 4L is a detail sectional view taken on the line H of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form of the clamp,
Figure 6 is a plan view of a still further modified form of the clamp, and
Figure 7 is a sectional view of the pressure head provided with an angle reducing block.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates the yoke, 2 the pressure head, 3 the pressure screw and 4t the retaining arms of the clamp. The yoke 1 is provided with a screw threaded opening 5 to receive the pressure screw 3, and it is also provided on opposite sides with pairs of relatively spaced lugs 6. The retaining arms atare pivoted to and between the lugs 6 by bolts 7. The outer or free ends of the retaining arms 1 are inwardly bent to pro vide hooks 8 which are adapted to engage the work in the manner illustrated in Figure 1. The pressure head 2 is swivelly connected to the pressure screw 8, and the latter is provided. with an operating handle 9. The pressure head 2 comprises a body 10 from which extend angularly related wings 11. The wings are reenforced by ribs 12, and they provide in the forward side of the head an angular recess 13 which may be of any desired depth and the angular extent of which is preferably 45 degrees.
The clamp is especially designed tohold two angularly related pieces of work together while their glued joint is drying or work.
while they are being nailed together. In Figure 1 of the drawings, the two pieces of work it and 15 are shown in an angular relation of degrees. The pressure head 2 is applied to the corner of the work and the hook ends 8 of the retaining arms 4; are engaged with the outer side edges of the l/Vhen the pressure screw 13 is turned forwardly with respect to the yoke 1, the pressure head 2 is moved forwardly and the retaining arms rearwardly. Owing thereto, and as the corner of the work is located in the recess of the pressure head 2, the meeting edges of the work are drawn into firm contact with each other, and they may' be held in such contact during the dry ing of their glue joint or while the pieces of work are being nailed together.
To permit the pressure head 2 to be applied to the corner of two pieces of, work arranged at an angle of less than 45 degrees, a block 16 having an angular recess 17 corresponding to the angle of the corner of the work is removably secured within the recess 13 by sore vs 18 which pass through openings 19 in the wings 11. As shown in Figure 6, the clamp may be provided with pressure arms having pointed hooked ends, the arms being designated 45 and the pointed hooked ends 8. These arms adapt the clamp to be used for holding together two pieces of angularly related work of considerable width. When the pieces of work are narrow but of different widths, the clamp is, as shown in Figure 5, provided with arms of different lengths, the shorter arm being designated 49, the longer arms l" and the hooked ends of the arms are designated 8".
The clamp may be used by an artisan following any trade, as it is adapted to hold two pieces of metal, glass, wood, iron or the like together while their contacting ends are being connected or united. The clamp was however designed especially for use by cabinet makers, in order to reduce to the minimum the work and time required to unite two angularly related parts of a cabinet or other article of furniture, or to unite the parts a' post or column. I
It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthern'iore, the drawings are illustrative of preferred constructions, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made in the clamps as shown in the drawings Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is 1. A clamp comprising a yoke, a pressure screw carried by and extending forwardly beyond the yoke, a pressure head swivelly connected to the forward end of the. screw and provided in its forward side with an angular recess, a block removably secured in the recess and provided in its forward side with an angular recess, the angle of the recess in the block being less than the angle of the recess in the head, and retaining arms pivotally connected at their rearward ends to the yoke and entirely free of connection with each other and the screw and head, said arms being provided at their forward ends with hooks adapted to engagethe work at points forwardly beyond the head.
2. A clamp comprising a yoke a pressure screw carried by and extending forwardly beyond the yoke, a pressure head embodying a body swivelly connected to the forward end of the screw and angularly related wings extending forwardly from the body and provided at their outer sides with re enforcing ribs, and retaining arms pivotally connected at their rearward ends'to the yoke and entirely free of connection with each other and the screw and head and provided at their free ends with work engaging hooks, In testimony whereof I affix my signature PETER K A RSEBOOM.
