M. HARDEY.
SCBEWDRIVER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5, 1921.

BY f M .dITOW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE.
SGREWDRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1921.
Application filed January 5, 1921. Serial No. 435,247.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL HARDEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Screwdriver, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a screw driver used for the purpose of starting screws in inaccessible or inconvenient places or wherever it may be inconvenient to hold the screw with one hand and hold the screw driver with the other. An object of the in vention is to hold the screw with suflicient force to permit the screw to be rotated as may be required without being disengaged from the screw driver, a shoulder being provided to hold the screw in line with the screw driver during the starting operations.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the drawings in which the same numeral is applied to the same portion, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete screw driver; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the end of the screw driver showing a screw applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a view of the screw driver looking at right angles to Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the driving end of the screw driver. A numeral 1 which indicates the handle of the screw driver which may be in any desired form provided with a ferrule (2) for holding the steel bit (3) from rotating.
At its opposite end the steel bit is provided with a long slit 3. The sides of the bit adjacent the ends are provided with raised shoulders (5) and (6).
The ends of the bit project beyond side shoulders as shown at (7) and (8). The
raised shoulders are recessed so as to be able applied to a fiat head screw without difii-' culty.
In operation the two points of the screw driver bit are squeezed together with sufiicient force to bring them within the driving slot of the screw. The screw is then inserted on the two bits, (7) and (8) with its head against the shoulders (5) and (6). The spring of the end of the bit opens with sufiicient force to hold the screw firmly in place and owing to the support given the screw by the shoulders, it is readily possible to start the screw in any desired place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, reserving modifications within the scope of the appended claims is as follows;
1. A screw driver bit having a pair of spring bits at its end and means adjacent the end of the bits to steady the screw.
2. A screw driver bit comprising a bit with a slit formed at its end to produce two adjacent bits and a shoulder on each bit against which a screw bears when the two bits are squeezed together to bring them into the slot in the head of the screw.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto'set my hand this 27th day of Dec. D. 1920.
MANUEL HARDEY.
