My invention relates to that class of hair cutting machines or hairclippers employed for cutting the hairs of persons or animals and having shearing or clipping cutters which can be adjusted with relation to the handles in different positions to be adapted to special purposes for use arising from certain circumstances.

The nature of the invention consists in the fact that the stationary handle can be adjusted in different positions on. the axis of the stationary cutter-carrier whilst the movable handle is on its one side coupled to the same axis which drives the oscillatory or sliding cutter. By this means a simple central construction is obtained which permits an easy handling also during adjusting.

In the accompanying drawing the subject matter of the invention is represented by way of an example in a special mode of construction.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of the hair cutting machine in which the cutters or shearing parts are situated in their normal position with relation to the handles; the closing cap is thought to be removed.

Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the cutters in a position in which they are turned through an angle of 180 degrees. In this position the machine is fit for shaving or clipping the beard or for self-hair cutting.

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line I-I of Fig. 1.

The body of the hair cutting machine is not. as usually, directly connected with the handle 2 but by insertion of a ratchet gear. This gear consists for instance of a crownwheel gear the body 1. A ratchet or pawl 4 pivoted to the handle 2 is brought into engagement with said gear 3 so that in the position of engagement of the ratchet with the crownwheel 3 the handle 2 is rigidly connected with thebodyl. If the ratchet or pawl 4 i is turned by means of its tail 5 around its pivot 6 against the action of a spring, so the handle 2 can be adjusted with relation to the body 1 ot the machine through any angle with relation to the pitch of the crown-wheel gearing, so that one is enabled to obtain not only two different positions according to Figures 1 and 2 but also several intermediate positions.

The counter-handle 7 is rotatablymounted 3 being formed on the face of with relation to the handle. 2; it does not engage directly, as usually, the driver arm 8 for the movable cutter 9,v but it is coupled on its one side by means of a pawl 10,

brought under the action of a spring, to a ratchet wheel 11 in such a manner, that durmg the movement of the handle? in the opening direction the pawl 10 can freely slide over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 11 whilst in the closing direction the ratchet wheel 11 is rotated by the pawl 10. To the preferably hollow nave 12 of the ratchet wheel 11 the driver arm 8 is keyed on for instance by means of a squared part on said nave, so that said arm is rotated together with the ratchet wheel 11 during the closing movement. Consequently a transverse m0- t1on with relation to the stationary countercutter 14 is imparted to the knife 9 which takes place against the action of a straddling spring 13 which is conically wound. The rear end oi the arm 8 rests on said spring. If thearm 8 is turned in one direction about the vertical axis 12 bymeans of the handles 2 and 7, the spring 13 is compressed and has a tendency to turn the arm 8 backto its normal position. When the handle 2 is released it returns to its normal position, thereby returning the movable comb 9. The handles 2, 7 are then spread from each other.

By the laterally coupling of the ratchet gear between the handle 7 and the driver arm 8 as Well as by the adjusting gear situated between the handle 2 and the casing body 1 the effect is obtained, that the cutting mo vement of the two cutters or knives 9 and 14 agalnst one another is invariably maintained in any position of the-casing-body l with relation to the handle 2. Therefore the instrument can be employed in any. position of the handles with relation to the cutters as a common hand-cutting or shearing machine. 7

Instead of using the ratchet gear 3, 4 for the adjustment of the handle 2 with relation to the casing body 1 any other kind of a coupling may be used, for instance, a slot maybe cut in the body 1 and a binding screw attached to the handleor similar recesses or the like may be provided. J net as Well instead of the ratchet wheel lland the pawl 10 for the lateral coupling of the handle 7 to the driver arm 8 lateral ratchetgears of any other kind may be employed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:
