TOOL FOR INSERTING AND EXTRAGTING PINS AND WASHERS.
Application filed ,Jllne 9, 1928. Serial No. earner.
The present invention relates ,to tools of a certain class employed for inserting and extracting washers and pins. The improved tool is particularly useful in such lnstances where the washers or pins or the llke are located in places which are comparatively d1f ficult of access so that an ordinary pair of pliers or similar tool cannot be conveniently operated.
The improved tool is designed for several purposes, one purpose being to operate with ordinary straight headless pins and for this purpose two pairs of gripping jaws are providcd on the tool so that the proper pair may be selected, one pair of jaws being useful for operation on vertically arranged pins and the other, for horizontally arranged pins. The tool is also provided with jaws or means for holding or gripping washers, particularly the open slotted or horseshoe washers commonly used 1 with motor vehicles. Furthermore, means are provided on the tool for extracting cotter pins. Each device or member of the tool performs its separate function but these members are rendered operative by a common member ormembers in such a manner that the several devices or members are co-operative in their action. The invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- 1 Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete tool in one position of operation where the jaws are closed to grip a pin;
"l igurc 2 is a plan view showing the tool with the pin gripping jaws open and the jaw for holding washers in its closed position;
Figure 3 is a plan View of the same tool showing the pin gripping jaws in the closed position and the washer gripping jaw in its full open position;
Figure i is a detail view of a piece which carries the two movable aws of the tool;
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the operating plate or member of the tool, and
Figure 6 is a plan View of the body of the tool.
Referring to said drawings, the complete tool consists of the body member 1 which is preferably a drop forging or, if desired, a casting may be employed. The tool is enlarged at one end to provide a head 2 and this head is cut out to form a seat 3 for a washer which is an ordinary open slotted type commonly used on motor vehicles. The opposite end of the member 1 is enlarged to provide a head in which a seat is formed for a separate piece l carrying the movable aws 5 and 6 and which piece is arranged to turn on pivot pin 7. The fixed or immovable menu hers of the jaws are formed by integral projections or extensions 8 and 9 on the body member 1. The operative member of the tool consists of a plate 10 which is movable so as to slide on the body member 1. Screws or pins 11 hold the plate 10 in operative relation with the body member 1 and which pins 11 lie within slots l2 which limit the sliding movement of said plate 10.
/Vhen the sliding. plate 10 is in the position shown in Figure 1, the bifurcated ends 13 partly cover the washer which is placed in the jaw or seat 3 and in this same position of the plate, the pin gripping jaws are both closed so that the vertically arranged jaws 58 would grip a vertical pin such as a or the horizontally arranged jaws 6-9 would grip the horizontal pin 7) and to enhance the gripping action of the jaws, each jaw has the groove 14. i
In the position shown in Figure 1, the jaws are closed and it will be noted that the pin or screw 15 is in an angular position relatively to the pivot 7 andwhich pin is within the radius slot 16. To effect opening of the jaws, the sliding plate 10 is thrown into the position shown in Figure 2 and to facilitate operation of this plate, the lug 17 is provided thereon. The relative position of the pin 15 with the pivot 7 is such that when the plate is brought to the extreme position, in the direction of the indicating arrow 0, the result is that the movable jaws 6 6 will open as shown. In Figure 3, the jaw for holding the washer is completely open so that the washer may be readily inserted therein and when thebifurcat'ed members 3 are pushed over to completely or partly cover the washer, the latter is firmly held in place so that it may be seated where required with facility and furthermore, this gripping action will also serve to hold the washer which is tobe re moved.
The jaws for removing and inserting pins are inpairs, one pair being in alignment with the body of the tool and these jaws are employed for removing horizontal pins. The other jaws lie at right angles to the body and these jaws are employed for removing or inserting vertical pins. A further device consisting of the spur 18 is carried on the tool and this device is employed for removing cotter pins. One way of operating this device is shown by broken lines in Figure 1 and in this case the hook or spur 18 is engaged in the looped head of the cotter. pin 19. The bolt or nutwith which the pin is associated provides the rest for the fulcrum of the tool, and which fulcrum is the horizontal stationary jaw 9. \Vith this arrangement, the cotter pin is readily engaged by the hook device under a leverage action, the clinched ends of the cotter pin are brought together and pulled through the hole in the end of the bolt, "for example.
Various modifications may be made in carrying out the details of the invention hereinbefore described and it is to be understood that any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.
