My invention relates to packing and display containers in which medium or small articles, either breakable o'r unbreakable, can be conveniently and quickly packed for shipment by the manufacturer and which may be opened by the retailer to display itscontents in a convenient and attractive mannerwithout injury to the container.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a packing container which will be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and which when opened becomes a self-supporting display device which .will be attractive in'appearance for counter or wall display of the articles packed therein. Another object of my invention is to provide a combination packing and display container which is divided longitudinally into two compartments by a vertical partition which is of such'proportion to extend upward above the container to display advertising matter, and which, when properly folded down, entirely covers andprotects the articles in the front or display compartment.

Another object of my invention is to provide a combination packing and display container of two compartments, namelya display compartment and a reserve compartment; the dividing partition forming these compartments being a cover for the former when folded down and having means for holding it in a vertical position when opened to display the articles packed therein, said means being in the form of end pieces or wings which fold backward causing the reserve compartment to be invisible to the vendee.

A further object of my invention is to provide a combination packing and display container comprising display and reserve com partments; the front of the former being so out and formed so as to fold inward on a horizontal plane to form an aligning member for the articles in both compartments.

\Vith these and other objects in view. to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. 3 I

The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept'suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.

The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding partsthroughout the several-views, and more specifically defined and indicated in theappended claims.

Fig. 7 is a greatly reduced side view ofoneof the pieces which divide the display and reserve compartments into individual stalls for each article packed in the. container.

The body portion of my combination packing and display container consists of-one sheet of material such as heavy paper or cardboard and comprises the ends 1 and 2, the front and rear portions'3 and 4 respectively, the aligning portion 5, the 6 and the reserve compartment co ver*7.. (See Fig. 5). -To form the body portion, the ends 1 and 2 and the. front and rear portion, 3 and- 4 are first bent at right angles to one another on the scored lines 8, 9 and 10 which define them. The gluing tab 11, defined by the scored line12 and integral with the end 1, is then glued to the inner surface of the rear portion 4 causing the sides to take a rectan'gu lar form. The tabs 13 and 14, defined by the scored lines 15 and 16 integral with the ends bottom 1 and respectively are then bent inward and the bottom 6 is also bent inward over -them on the scored line 17 which defines it.

The first step necessary in this operation is to place the partition pieces 28 in position in the slots 29 cut into the dividing partition 30. These pieces form the individual stalls for the articles which are to be packed. This .is accomplished by forcing the partition pieces 28 upward at right angles of the openings 32 reach the ends of the slots 29 as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. .The object of the opening 32-is to eliminate the necessity of running the slots 29 up to the scored line 33 which would materially weaken the dividing partition. The aperture 45 in the cover 7 is provided to afford means for raising the cover when the container has been opened and placed on display.

This downward bending of the front cover is facilitated by the apertures 53 as the double bending of two thicknesses of material at the point of intersection of the scored lines and 52 would not permit a sharp corner to be made or would cause a rupture of the material at this point.

When the container is opened for display the wings 46 and 47 are swung outward at right angles to the covers 48 and 49 and the locking tabs 54 and 55 located at the lower ends of the wings are caused to enter the curved slots 56 and 57 cut in the ends 1 and 2 respectively; the tabs hooking under the upper edge of the slot thereby holding the covers 48 and 49 in anupright position as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 to display the row of'articles in front of them and to dismay have an ornamental contour to conform with the advertising matter printed upon it.

As the articles in the display compartment are sold they are replaced by those in the reserve compartmentwhich is invisible to the vendee. This eliminates the unsightly appearance of a display container with a number of vacant spaces until fifty per cent of the articles have been sold or the reserve may be replenished from another containerwhich would eliminate the possibility of a vacant space while the articles are displayed.
