PAPER-HANGERS BOARD.
Application filed December Our invention relates to improvements in paper hangers boards and the object of our improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use. f
In the acco-n'ipanying drawing v F gure 1 is a plan view of our improved paper hangers board in the folded or closed position, being in part broken away to show one end of the slot for housing the zinc straight edge, the joint for the arm extension, and certain other details.
Figure 2 is a similar view in the position for use, the arm extensions "for extra widths of paper being shown, and an extraboard section being indicated'by broken lines.
7 Figure '3is an end elevation in the fully opened position, with the guide section extending the Widthat the top, and the arms in pendant position for use as supporting legs. Figure 4 is a sectional View on-an enlarged scale on the line 4a of; Fig. 2- through the adjustable hinge." i V Figure 5 isa sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2, through one of the indexes.
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic plan view under conditions of use with a roll of paper, part thereof being in the cutting position, with markings, numbered, to indicate figures on the paper that require matching with incidental waste or surplusage of paper, and the setting or the indexes to correspond.
Our improved paper hangers board coinprises a main section 10 at the "middle; a front section 11 that serves to extend the width of the board, and a guide section 12 at the rear that cooperates with the other sec: tions in difierent ways accordingto the posir tion, as will be described, said sections being connected along opposed edges by means of sets of hinges 13. f
The board when set up for use is supported by horses as. usual and or collapsible and portable form and when paper used that is extra wide'an extra section Ll of. board may be used along the front.
The guide section 12 may be opened out so as to serve to provide additional width to the boardas a wholetor use in applying the paste to the paper and in such position the arms 15 and 16 that are hinged thereto are brought to a pendant position so as to serve as additional supporting legs. I V
In e u ting op rat on t e arm 15, adjacent on end and. shown. a the gh in Fig- S, 1. 25.- se l No. 74.1
2, serves as a cutter, thepaper being torn .orcut along the outer edge 17 thereof, and
is connected to the guide section 12 bythe cutter-arm hingelff, so that it can be swung back and forth relatively to the cutting po--' sition. I
At the'o-pposite or left end the arm 16 is connected to the guide sect-ion 12 by means of the slide hinge 18 that is slidahly mounted on the guide section 12 through the medium "of a metaljplato 19 for longitudinal movement, Said left arm 16 serves as weight or block for holding down the fi'eeond 20 of the paper. The part21or" the paper to beopera-tcd upon extends from the arm 16 along the intervening space and under the arm .15 and the body 22 "of the roll rests upon the tail end portion 23 of the board at 'the right.
v Markers or indexes 2st are used in conjunc-v tion with the decorations or figures on the paper for locating the length of the paper to'be cut andthese are mounted for longitudinal sliding movement on the strip 19in substantially the same manner'as theslide hinge18. i i l With plain paper to be operated upon only one marker 24' would be used and"preferably in order to. reduce waste of paper, the, one adjacent the arm 16 and this would be adjusted to a position close t'osaid 16.
Inthe case. of operating upon paper having ornamental figures, requ ring matching and consequent waste, the two markers would be used and these would be set so that the space 25 between'the ma fkerswould cor-- respond to the extra waste duetosuch particu'lar paper. l
Thus in Fig. 6 the. exposed face is shown as mar ed off' by a of cross-lines comprising dash-and-dot lines 26 that alternate with broken lines 27 that indicate a difference in characterand the spaces 25fbetween adja cent lines determine thev width" of the space v25 et enthe m r ers r lndjexe 24L.
' Alternately the left and the right marker 24: would be used in locating the paper on the board and all ofthe cutting would be donealong the edge 17 of the arm 15. i
p The board, as described, provides ameansol' effectinga' system of cutting. he rms 15 an llfi ompris 1 a ma n part 28 that is madeiof proper length for, cooneration with h main part e ion 10 and he nt 'se tion'll f r Working pon paper of ordinary widths and for use with the extra loose section 14' they are provided each with an end portion or extension 29 that provides the needed extra length. The joint between the main part 28 and the extension part 29 may be of any suitable form. As shown, the extension part 29 has a pair of spaced longitiiidinally directed fingers 81 that project from the end face and enter within suitable sockets in the opposed end face of the'm'ain part 28.
Latch-es 83 at the ends serve to hold the board locked in the closed position.
In such closed position the free end face 34 of the guide section 12 is opposed to the free end face 35 of the front section 11 and serves as a closure for a slot 36 that enters inwardly into the adjacent end portion of the front section 11 and that extends along the length thereof, being closed at the ends by plugs 87. v
The slot 36 serves as a housing for a straight-edge '38, usually of zinc, that is used for trimming the paper longitudinally. A notch 39 may be provided in the free edge or end face 35 for providing access to the straight-edge 38. i
In the closed position the arms 15 and 16 are disconnected from the guide section 12 by breaking the hinges 15 and 18 by pulling out the pintles 40; each arm retains a hinge member; the two arms are connected in alignment by means of one of the pintles 40, and they supported against the bottom face 41 of the front section 11 by means of spring clips 42.
As shown, the hinge member 43 on the right arm 15 has a pair of spaced hinge knuckles 44 and for cooperating therewith the hinge member 45 on the left arm 16 has a single middle hinge knuckle 46.
The outer hinge member 47 of the slide hinge 18 that cooperates with the hinge member 45 on the left arm 16 is the part that slides along the sheet metal plate or strip 19. For cooperating as a hinge member with the single middle hing-e knuckle 46 of the left arm 16 said. outer hinge member 47 has a pair of laterally spaced hinge knuckles 48.
In order to permit of such sliding of the outer hinge member 47' the same is made in the form of a. spring clip of a single piece of sheet metal that is bent to provide a return bend. Said return bend serves to inter-connect a top portion and a bottom portion 51. that are opposed one to the other and spacedfor gripping the portion of the sheet metal strip or plate 19 that is positioned therebetween.
The knuckles 48 are located at the free edge of the top portion 50 and at the free edge ofthe bottom portion 51 there is a downwardly directed lip or finger 52.
The lip 52 cooperates with a longitudinal groove 53 in the opposed face 54 of the material of the guide section 12 and serves to position the slide hinge 18 laterally.
The indexes 24 are supported fromfthe strip 19 in the same manner as the hinge 18, the clamping details being similar, and in the structure the exposed body portion 55 corresponds to the top portion 50. v
The edge 17 of the right arm 15 is simply a right-angled corner that serves as a straight-edge along which the paperniay be torn or out. In the use of the term cut or cutting, the generic significance of the term is implied as having reference to any manner of severing the length or strip of paper de sired from the roll. Actual cutting may be en'iployed in some cases, whereas in others, as with an experienced operator, simple tearing may be relied upon.
As described and as particularly shown in Fig. 4, the supporting hinge part 47 of the slide hing-e 18 is operatively supported for sliding along the metal strip 19 by integral means that operate as a spring clamp, involving upper and lower clamping arms that are connected by a return bend of sheet metal. 'lhe downwardly directed lip 52 on the lower of said arms by engagement in the groove 53 serves to prevent sidewise movement and separation from the supporting strip and to confine movement to a sliding movement along said strip.
Also, as described, the indices or markers 24 are similarly operatively confined, as shown in Fig. 5.
Considering the detail of the hinge knuckles, the supporting hinge'part 47 of the slide hinge 18 comprises a pair of knuckles 48 symn'ietrically arranged and separated by a space for receiving the single knuckle 46 of the left arm 16. The knuckle feature for the hinge 15 for the right arm 15 is similar to that for the arm 16, but the position thereof and relation to the connected parts is reversed, in that the two spaced knuckles 44 are provided on the hinge member 43 on the arm 15 and the single knuckle for cooperating therewith, like the knuckle 46 on the arm 16, is provided on the supporting member that is attached to the guide section 12. r
The provision of the arrangement of the hinge knuckles described ensures proper connection for the arms 15 and 16 with acorrect connection of the hinges by the removable pintles and, in particular, that the arm 15 that used for severing the paper will be properly connected for use,
