PAPER-BAG HANDLE.

This invention relates to improvements in shopping bags or carrying bags, with particular reference to the handles thereof.

The object of my invention is to produce cheaply an efficient shopping or carrying bag, such as is in common use for carrying a number of packages.

Another object of the invention is to provide flat strap handles for such a carrying bag and novel means for cheaply and effectively securing the handles to the bag.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.

In carrying out my invention I have the paper bag body B, and I provide a strip of heavy paper or other reinforcing material A, which is folded over the top edge of bag so that one-half 2, of the strip A is folded upon each side of the bag B. In this folded position two openings spaced apart C, C are made thru the folds 2, 2 of the folded strio A and the bag body B as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The reinforced strip A being folded, is securely fastened upon the bag body B by glue or any other adhesive substance or securing means.

As a further part of my device I have a handle member D, which is formed of a flat strip of fabric, leather or other flexible material. The ends 3, 3 of the handle member D are passed thru the openings G, C and then turned up on the inner side of the strip A, and there secured against the member D and 1926. Serial No. 117,838.

A by a rivet or rivets 4, which pass thru the handle ends 3, 3 and the bag body A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The flat surface of the handle D, D, forming a yielding easy contact with the hand.

In carrying the bag, the handles form strong but flexible members for this use, which can be folded over on the body A, or within the bag body A for folding up the bag body A, These handles do not cut the hand or present a harsh surface such as is present when a,

handle opening is cut thru the paper body or when round cords are used for handles. The ends of the handles being thus passed thru the openings in the bag A, turned up and riveted or otherwise secured, present the full width of the handle surface against the edge of the openings C, C and, held in position by the rivets or other securing means, cannot be easily torn from their mounted position, and form a strong, secure, flexible handle.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:

In a paper bag handle, a foldable reinforcing member folded over the edge of the bag body in equal folds and permanently secured thereto, said reinforcing member and bag into a small, compressed size.

body being provided with aligning openings which extend through both folds of the reinforcing member and the bag body, a handle member formed of a flat strip of flexible material each end of the handle passing through an opening in the reinforcing member and bag body and turned upwardly to terminate adjacent the upper end of the foldable reinforcing member, said handle snugly engaging the upper portions of the openings, and fastening means extending through the double thickness of the handle and reinforcing member and through the bag body, said fastening means being disposed between the upper edge of the bag and the openings.
