Description

Jan. 14, 1930. s. A. ZAUNER BAG FASTENER Filed July 5, 1927 I nvenlor SetusflanA-Zaaner By Maw A flor ne y Patented Jan. 14, 1930 Uliiffl SAYS SEBASTIAN A. ZAUNER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE TI-IIRID TO JULES MAES, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON BAG FASTENER Application filed July 5, 1927. Serial No. 203,409.
My present invention relates to improvements in bag fasteners of the quick detachable type, and adapted for use in connection with mail bags, clothes bags, bags used as receptacles in vacuum sweepers, and with various other bags of this character. The closure may be used with bags or receptacles made up of various materials such as canvas, cloth, rubber or other material that may readily be folded to form the closure for the bags. The bag may be used as a package carrier, and the closure or bag fastener may be utilized in some instances, as the handle by which the bag is carried. The bag is adapted for many uses, and the closure or fastener is capable of various modifications and changes as illustrated in the drawings.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts in the closure of the bag as will hereinafter more fully be pointed out and claimed. The closure is designed to effectually seal or close the end of the bag, and when the closure is removed the aperture or opening in the bag is unobstructed and comprises the entire area of the open end of the bag.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated several forms or modifications of my bag closure, in which the invention is illustrated according to the best modes I have so far devised for the practical appli cation of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bag with which my closure is used, the bag being shown in closed position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the bag closure at line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top edge view at one corner of the closure;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View at the upper open end of the bag with the closure turned back to open position;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the closure using straps and buckles;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the modified form of the closure using loops and a tie strap; and
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the closure of Fig. 6 at line 77 in Fig. 6.
In carrying out my invention, the bag 1 may be of any suitable shape, size and material, and it is provided with an open aperture or mouth having the two edges 2 and 3. The aperture between these edges may be closed by suitable quick detachable fasten-- ers, as snap fasteners 45. These snap fasteners are of the Well known glove fastening type, and are used to secure the edges 2 and 3 of the bag together preparatory to the utilization of the closure of my invention. After the edges 2 and 3 have been snapped together by the fasteners 45, the fastened edges are turned down or folded upon themselves at line A-A in Fig. 4, and then after these edges have been folded down they are enclosed by the closure fastener of my invention.
The closure fastener includes a base piece 6 which is stitched or otherwise secured on the outside of the bag just below the folding line AA in Fig. 4, and this base piece is provided with a fold 7 to form a pocket 8, as best seen in Fig. 4. The base piece and pocket extend thefull width of the bag and the pocket may be a little longer than the bag in order that the base piece may be folded at line B-B in Fig. 4 and the pocket turned over to enclose the folded mouthof the bag. r
The pocket 8 is also provided with quick detachable fasteners comprising the snap sockets 9 which coact with heads 10 that are secured at the exterior edge of the bag aperture as seen in Fig. 2.
The pocket 8 is provided with end extensions or tabs 11 that are foldable on lines 0. Thus when the pocket 8 is folded over the folded mouth, these tabs 11 are folded around the pocket as indicated in Fig. 3. The tabs have socket heads 12 which snap over heads 13 that are secured on the exterior of the pocket 8 near the ends thereof.
Thus it will be apparent that the edges 2 and 3 may be fastened together by the snap fasteners 4-5, then the fastened mouth is folded down on the line AA. Next the pocket 8 is folded on line BB and the pocket is turned over the folded mouth leaving the extensions or tabs 11 projecting from g V V 7 1,743,509
'the top of the bag. These tabs are then passed around the ends of the pocket and the snap fasteners 12 and 13 are snapped together to secure the closure as in Fig. 1.
While I have referred to the detachable fastenin devices as snap fasteners using the wel -known socket and head to be snapped together, it will be understood that other quick' detachable means may be utilized.
In Fig. 5, I have shown the pocket provided with a number of straps 14 and buckles 15 by means of which the pocket is buckled or stra ped to the bag, instead of V 15 using the snap asteners 9 and 10.
In Figs. 6 and '7, the bag is provided with a number of loops 16, and the wall 8 of the pocket is provided with slots 17 to enable the wall of the pocket to fit over these loops.
as; A retaining strap 18 which is secured at one end 19 to the pocket is passed through these successive loops 16 to secure the pocket in glosed position over the apertured end of the In all cases, it will be apparent that the pocket provides a smooth and unobstructed closure for the folded mouth of the bag, which presents a neat and attractive appearance, and provides an inefiectual closure for 38 the interior of the bag.
Various changes may be made, as for instance in the number of fastening devices used, and in the size and shape of the bag and of the fastening devices, and the different modifications as illustrated in the drawings may also be utilized, without depart ing from the principles of; my invention.v 7 Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Le ters Pat nt -is.
- The combination with a bag having folded edges to close its mouth, of a base piece se-. cured to the exterior of the bag and fashioned with a foldable pocket adapted to 6 enclose the closed mouth, means for securing the pocket to the bag, extension tabs on the ends of the pocket, and detachable fasteners on'the tabsand base piece for securing the ends of the pocket.
. 5n 7 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
SEBASTIAN ZAUNER.
