M31 invention relates to an improvement in win ows and more particularly to an im- .proved means for mounting swinging winof the type adapted to be both raised and lowered in a 'verticalplane and to be swung on a horizontal axis.
Having indicated, in a general way, the nature and purpose of my invention, I will now proceed toa detailed description thereof with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrative of a preferred embodiment and in which Fig. 1 is a front view, partly brokenawa-y, of a window embodying my invention.

Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views showing the supporting device for the window, in accordance with my invention, the window being shown in closed, partially open and fully opened positionrespectively.
In the drawings a ind' ates a window sash provided with a pane of glass 7). a indicates an upper sash provided with a pane of glass b, but my invention will be fully described by reference hereafter to the sash a, or lower sash only. The sash a is connected on each side to a stile a. mounted in the window frame d, being connected by the usual sash cords to the usual sash weights to facilitate raising and lowering of the sash which is adapted to slide with the stiles.

nee-ted on each side to. a stile a, which serves to support the window, and my invention relates to the connecting means betweenthe sash and stile. To the sash is secured a U-shaped fitting e, which is pivotally secured, by means of a bolt or rivet f, to a fitting g secured to the stile. The fittincr g or the stile if it be made hollow is provided with an arcuate slot h positioned abovethe bolt f and formed about the bolt 7 as a center, through which extends a pin 11 carried by the fitting e.
A latching member is provided with a Y-shaped aperture 7: and with a slot Z, the ends of which are recessed. The member j is provided with a projection 0r tail m. The member is positioned within the fitting g opposite to the fitting a with the end of pin 71 extending through the Y-shaped aperture 7:. The member 9' is secured to the fitting g by means of a stud n, which passes through the slot Z. Adjacent the tail m is a pin 0 extending from fitting g.
In thelower portion of the'sash there is provided a right angled hole p extending from the under surface of the lower cross piece of the sash to the upper surface outside of the pane of glass. The end of the aperture outside of the'pane of glass is adapted to be closed by means of a pivoted cover plate 9.
As will now be observed, the sash a is pivotally connected to the stile 0, through the medium of fittings e and g and bolt or rivet f, and may be swung open or closed about bolt 7' as a pivot. 1
l/Vhen the sash is fully closed the member j will be in the position shown in Figure 4, that is, supported from the stud n, which is engaged in the right hand recessed end of slot Z. If the sash be swung downwardlywhen it reaches a half open position, the pin 2' will engage the end of the right hand branch of the aperture is and further opening movement of the sash will cause the member to be moved bodily and about pin 2', so as to release stud n from the recessed end of slot 1. It will be understood that my invention is applicable to windows which are supported for swinging only, as Well as to windows whichareboth slidable "and swingable, and it will further be understood that the window may be pivoted to its stile, the stile being so formed as to accommodate the latching ,member with elimination of the fitting 9.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect Letters Patent is i 1. In a window, in combination, a stileprovided with an arcuate slot, a sash, means atfording a pivotal connection between thestile and sash, a displaceable latching membercarried by the stile and a pin, carried by the sash. and extending through the arcuate slot in the stile, said pin being adapted to be engaged by the latching member to retain the 'sash in fully opened position and said latching member being adapted to be displaced in an opening followedbya closing movement of said sash to permit said pin to be engaged by the latching member to retain the sash in a partially opened position.
