H. D. NEFF EXTENSION HANDLE FOR WRBNCHES Filed May 15, 1928 Patented illet. '30, 1928.
HARRY D. NEIE'F, O1? NEH/"PORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXTENSION HANDLE Ffill V/"REFJICHES.
Application fi1cd May 15,
My present invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to novel extension handles for w o i hes.
One obj'ct e present invention is the provision of an extension handle which will. be economical to inanufacture and simple to operate.
Another object of the invention is to devise an extension handle whirh will be strong, durable. rugged and eflicient.
A further object is to so construct my novel extension handle that when used with a wrench, either a straight or an 'd-wrench, the pull or strain point will be located at the strongest-point of the wrench, instead of on the weak sideofthe head, as in present methods.
J anther-feature of the present invention is that each extension handle can he made to accoinmodate several different sizes of open end Wrenches, as many asfour or five. Thus but two extension handles constructed as cording: to my invention will be required for the handling of an entire set of open end wrenches.
hly novel extension handle may be made in a single drop forging, requiring but one trim ni ng: operation and one punching open tion, and when properly hardened or tern pered will last indefinitely- My novel handle, therefore, comprises but a single piece, having no relatively delicate and expensive mechanism to get out of order. a feature which will appeal to mechanics and others skilled in these arts.
The above and other objects and features of the invention, details of construction, methods of application, and advantages, will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, illustrated preferred embodiments of the present invention,
Fig. l is a side elevation of my novel extension handle in position on an open end wrench Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of handle; and
Fig. l is a top plan view of the structure of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2. for a particular de scription of the invention, its construction,
192a Serial no. oracle.
application and operation, my present novel extension handle coi'nprises a handle proper 1. which. of course, will he of any desired or pred I pair of io' .ly extending parallel sides 2 forn'ied internal with the handle 1 through the medium of two inclined portions 3. lle
tween the forward ends of these sides 2 is a the same width as the thickness of the handle of the wrench 9. p lletween the sides 2 is a recess 10 of a suf 'ilfllell size to receive the head 11 of the wrench S).
ll hen applying' this extension handle to a wrenrh 9, the headll of the wrench is irserted over the crossl'iar 4t and the wrench then straightened, which brings the head ll down into the recess 10, whereit is protected against lateral slippage or displacement by the sides 2, and the shank 9 is seated in the groove 8, which affords a firm seat therefor- In this manner the pull or strain point is located at the strongest part of the wrench, via, below the head 11, thus affording an extremely strong rugged device, and enabling great strains to be put on the wrench and extension handle without breakage or damage. The major pull of the extension handle will be away from the wrench 9, and longitudinal slippage of the extension handle in this direction will be prevented by the manner and position in which the head 11 fits over the cross-bar 4L. .hus an extremely strong, rugged, eflicient and quick-acting extension handle produced, which may be made in a very economical manner as a single drop forging, requiringbut one trimming operation and one punching operation. The advantageous features of my novel extension handle will appeal. to mechanics, machinists, and others by whom these implements are utilized.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have illustrated a slight modification, wherein the handle 15 has the parallel sides 16 inclined upwardly from said mined length. This handle has a.
handle and being united thereto by the inclined portions 17. In this handle the crossbar 181's positioned above the axis of the handle 15, instead of being in a line therewith as in Figs. 1 and 2. The forward end 19 of the handle, is formed with the groove 23 in which the shank ,20 :of a wrench is 7 adapted to closely lit.
The opening in the head-Ql-ofthis wrench 10 20 is illustrated as engaging the crossbar 18., although a recess 22 is provided in which the head 21 may seat similar to thearrangementin 1 and 2. This construction of Figs. '3 and 4 diiiers but slightly from the structure of.Figs. land 2, and is equally as economical'to manufacture, rugged, strong and elliicient inoperation. In each instance the pull leverage is substantially central of the wrenches 9 and ZO. Each of the extension handles 1 and 15 will accommodate .a Wide rangerof wrenchcsizes, it beingmy present intention to construct-two sizes of handles to-take care of an entire set of wrenches.
I believethat the extension-handlesillustrated and described in this application'are novel, and I 'have therefore claimed, the same (hereimsaid' claims being drawn to the novel features;oft-heseextension handles, as I am aware that an extension .handle .per se is not broadly novel. 7
While I have necessarily described my ,present, invention somewhatin detail, it will be appreciated that I may vary the size, shape and arrangement oi parts Within reaso nably widelimits'without departing from thespirit of the invention.
My invention is further described and defined in the form of claims as follows:
1. An extension handle for wrenches comprising a handle portion, two parallel sides extending forwardly of and each united to the handle portion by a relatively short inclined portion,a crossbar uniting said sides, said crossbar, sides and handle portion torming a recess of a size to receive the head of a wrench, the forward ends of said sides being inclined inwardly to a union having a groove therein to receive the shank of a wrench whose head seats in said recess, said crossbar, sides and union forming a recess to permit the-passage therethrough of the head of said wrench.
2. Anextension handle for wrenches C0111- prising a'handle portion, two parallel sides extending forwardly of and each united to the handle portion by a relatively short inclined portion, a crossbar uniting said sides, said crossbar, sides andhandleportion forming a recess of avsize to receive the head ot a wrench, the forward :ends of said sides beinginelined inwardly to a union having a groove therein to receive the shank of a wrench whose head seats in said recess, said crossbar, sides and union forming a recess to permit the passage thercthrough of the head of said wrench,-the forward portion of said sides, attheirnnion, being on a plane above that of the handle portion.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
