UNITED STATES JOHN B. GROFOOT, OF ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
MAGAZINE HAMMER.
Application filed August 26, 1926. Serial No. 131,580.
My invention relates to improvements in magazine hammers and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character by means of which fastening elements, such as staples, may be repeatedly and continuously applied and driven 1n position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be reference to the accompanying forming a part of this specification,
which,
Fig. 1 is a side view of a magazine hammer embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof shown partiall in horizontal section;
Fig. 3 a transverse section tially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
The form of construction illustrated in 2 the drawings comprises a hammer head in the form of an enclosing casin having a vertically reciprocating springeld operating plunger 21 mounted therein as shown. The operating plunger 21 is provided with a cam surface 22 operating a reciprocating spring-held bolt 23 carrying a spring-held pawl 24 cooperating with a spring-held stop pawl 25 to cause automatic feeding, severing and driving of staples from a staple strip 26. The construction for feeding, severing and driving the staples from the staple strip 26 is a well-known mechanism for the urpose, illustrated in my prior atent, No. 1, 224,076, and requires no further description here, the same constituting no' part ofthe present invention except 1n so far as it cooperates with the parts to be presently described.
By holding the handle 34 in the hand and striking a blow with the hammer head 20, a staple from the staple strip 26 will be automatically severed and driven by the action of the plunger 21. In this manner the device may be employed as a magazine hammer for quickly, efiiciently and positively driving the staples for securing light articles, such as address cards or the like in places on boxes. The specific form and best understood by drawings and in 20 taken substan being fully arrangement of parts hereinafter described constitutes a simple and effective one for the purpose.
The form of construction illustrated constitutes a positive arrangement for operating the plunger 21. To this end the hammer head 20 is provided with a rigid operating handle 34 for manipulating the same. striking head 35 is slidably mounted on the head 20 in alinement with the plunger 21. Said striking head is mounted on a sleeve 36 which is slidable in the head 20 and has a guide passage 37 in which the plunger 21 slides and operates, the sleeve 36 receding into thehead 20 when a blow is struck. The striking head 35 is connected at opposite sides by links 38 with the lowermost joints 39 of toggle joint constructions 40 mounted on opposite sides of the head 20. The lateral joints 41 of said toggle joints are provided with rollers operating in slots 42 in head 20 whereby said to gle joints are nicely held in place and guide during their operations. The upper joint 43 of each toggle joint is connected by a link 44 with a collar or head 45 on the upper end of the plun er 21. By this arrangement it will be noted that upon striking a blow with the hammer head '20, the striking head 35 will recede into the head' 20, thus causing positive operation of the plunger 21 to sever and drive a staple as before. It will be noted that this arrangement exerts a positive, powerful and direct action upon the plunger 21, thus insuring operation thereof at each blow. The specific form and arrangement of parts is a simple and effective one for the purpose.
While I: have illustrated and described the prefe'rred forms. of construction for carmy invention into effect, these are capa leof variation and modification without de arting from the spirit of the invention. therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth,, but desire to avail myself of such.
variations and modifications as come within of the appended the scope described my invention,
Having what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I I I 1. A magaz ne hammer comprlsmg a hammer head inclfidin a reciprocating plunger; means 1n said liea operable by reciprocation of said plunger for applying and driving a fastening element; a handle rigidly secured to said head; a yielding striking member projecting from said head; and a toggle joint held plunger; means in said head operable by reciprocation of said plunger for-applyg and driving a fastening element; a handle rigidly secured to said head; a striking member projecting from said head in alinement with said plunger, said striking member being provided with a sleeve slidable in said head and slidable over said plunger, said plunger operating through said striking member; and a toggle joint arrangement at each side of said head operatively connected with said striking member and said plunger for reciprocating the latter upon striking a blow, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN B. CROFOOT.
