FASTENING-DRIVING MEANS FOR WELTS.

My invention relates to a tool for drivingfastenings, as for 'ex-.imple tacks, for securing welts with spreadable portions, and will be best understood from the following 5 description when read in the light ofthe accompanying drawing of one example of `the invention, while the scope of the inventlon will be more particularly pointed out 1n the appended claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is an elevation of the tool constructed according to my invention;

illustrating the tool applied to a Welt for the purpose of setting a tack; and
Fig. 5 is a View corresponding to Fig. 4 with the parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawing a support is provided in the form of a tubular body 1 in the bore 3 Aof which is rcciprocably mounted a plunger 5 ing means. At its outer end the tool is provided' with an operating means in the form of a head 7 for the plunger, a coil spring 9 surrounding the plunger and abutting at opposite ends respectively with the head and the end 1l of the support being provided for automatically returning the plunger when the head is released after being pushed toward the support for driving the fastening. Adjacent its end opposite the head 7 the plunger' carries a. transversely positioned in 13 the opposite projecting ends of which slide in the oppositely disposed slots 15 in the Walls of the support.
As illustrated, opposite sides of the support areflattened as indicated at 17, these flattened portions being recessed as in dlcated at 19 for providing grooves receiving and guiding the flat spring members 21.
For securing the springs to the support the present construction .provides plates 23 which lit the grooves 19 and are placed over the springs, the plates being secured to the support .byqneans of screws 25.
vThe spring members at their forward endsare shown as converging toward each other as indicated at 27, herein providing a of a fastening driv apart a distance sufficient to permit the fas-A tening engaging part 29 to pass between them. Herein the ends of the springs are notched as is indicated at to permit the springs to be passed over the head of `a--tack or the like employed for securing the welt in position, this construction also providing means :for aligning the tack .driving means with the tack.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have indicated a Welt having the base 37 and the portions 39 sewcd to the base by stitches indicated at 41, the position of the stitches and the resiliency'of the portions 29 permitting the latter to be spread apart to allow the tack or other fastening means to be driven. will be understood, normally the two portions 39substantially abut at their adjacent edges. Vhen the welt is to be applied the fastening means may be driven for a part of their length as indicated by the tack shown at 43 in Fig. 4. The tool isthen applied as indicated in Fig. 4, the notches 35 at the end of the springs serving to permit the springs to pass ,the head of the tack and to center the head of the tack with the tack engaging part 29. Forcing the plunger 3 into the positionshown by` Fig. 5 will cause the tack to be driven vand the springs to force tlie spreadable portions 39 apart sufiiciently to permit entry `of the tack driving part between them. 1. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, means for spreading means, and fastening and welt-engaging yzo means for centering a partially driven fastening beneath said driving means and spreading said portions of the Welt to permit said driving means to pass between them.
. 3. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, fastening driving means, and means actuated by said driving means for spreading said portions of the welt.
4. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, a body carrying means for spreading said portions of the welt, said body also carrying fastening driving means,
and a common ope-rating member carried by said body for actuating both means.
5. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, automatically retracted fastening driving means and automatically retracted welt portion spreading means.
6. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, separable parts respectively for engagement with the portions of the welt, and means for separating said parts and simultaneously driving a fasteng. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable` portions having, in combination, swinging parts for insertion between said portions of the welt, fastening driving means, and means, for reciprocating said drivin means and causing said parts alternate y'to swing away from and toward each other.
10. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, separable parts forming a wedge-shaped portion for insertion between said portions of the welt, and fastening driving means operative to separate said parts when said means is actuated to drive a fastening.
11. A tool for driving fastenings forsecuring welts with spieadable portions having, in combination, separable parts for insertion between said portions of the Welt, one of said parts yieldingly urged toward the other, and fastening driving means operative to separate said parts when said means is actuated to drive a fastening.
12. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, a pair of flat springs converging toward each other at their ends for insertion between said portions of the welt, and fastening driving means operative to separate said springs when said means is actuated to drive a fastening.
13'. A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, separable parts respectively formed for engagement with said portions of the welt, and fastening driving means operative to separate said parts when said means is actuated to drive a fastening.

A tool for driving headed fastenings for securing welts with separable portions having, in combination, means includin separable arts each for engagement wit one of sai portions of the welt, said parts being so formed as to clear the head of the fastening to be driven, and means for separating said parts and driving said fastening.,
15. A tool for driving headed fastenings for securing welts with separable portions having, in combination, means including separable parts for insertion between said portions of the welt, said parts being so formed as to clear the head of the fastening to be driven, and means for separating said parts and driving said fastening.
16. A tool for driving headed fastenings for securing welts with separable portions having, in combination, a pair of at spring members converging toward each other at one end for insertion between said portions vof the Welt and beingA so formed as to clear the` head of the fastening to be driven, fastening drivin means, and means for reci rocating said driving means and causing said spring lmembers alternately to move' apart and toward each other.
17. A tool for driving fastenings for` securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, fastening driving means, and means for centerin beneath said driving means a fastening to e driven and for spreading said portions of the welt.

A tool-fordriving fastenings for securing weltsrwith spreadable portions having, in combination, fastening driving means, and means including separable parts each for engagement with one of said portions of the welt, said parts being formed forclvcentering a fastening to be driven beneath said driving means.

A tool for driving fastenings for securing welts with sprea'dable portions having, in combination, fastening driving` means, means actuated by said fastening driving means for spreading said portions of the welt, said -means for spreading said portions of the welt having Vmeans for centering a fastening to be driven beneath said driving means. a

A tool for setting tacks for securing welts with spreadable portions having, in combination, a support, a pair of spaced vspring leaf members of material width cari ned by said support and converging toward each other at one of their ends to permit them to be inserted between the spreadable portions of the welt, and a resillently retracted tack setting member slidably carried by said support for reciprocation between said spring leaf members, said settin member having portions for engaging sai leaf members vfor spreading them apart when said setting mem r ismoved toward the tack' to be set, and said spring leaf members having their converging ends notched to rmit them to be passed over the head of sai tack.
