Application filed October 19,19 5; ser al No. e3, s'se.
This invention relates to camping and touring outfits more especially designed for the convenience of automobile users at picnics or cross-country trips.
The object of the invention is to provide a trunk-like cabinet which may be attached to an automobile at the rear, or on a run ning-board, and so designed that its contents are easily accessiblewhen so mounted, or detached.
A further object is to render the cabinet easily and quickly convertible into a dining outlit, the main cabinet serving as a table, and its cover as a bench or stool.
The invention is fully disclosed in the de scription' and claims following, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, in which: r f
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of a cabinet e1n bodying my invention, as attached at the rear of an automobile. Fig. 2 shows the same in the same position, but opened up and with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the cabinet detached, but in the same position as in Fig. 2. Fig. l shows the cabinet as arranged for a table. Fig. 5 shows the cabinet cover set to serve as a bench or stool.
In thedrawing, (Figs. 1 and 2) the numeral 5 denotes an automobile, which is supposed to have a suitable support at 6 for a trunk or camp kit, over the gasoline tank 7. Suitable provision is made for fastening such trunk or kit in place, the means herein shown being a pair of straps 8 connecting in a familiarway with the automobile.
The construction of the cabinet is best shown in Figs. 3, 1 and 5. The body of-the cabinet is abox or casing 9, closed on live sides, and open for the most part on the other. The open side is to be disposed outwardly, when mounted on an automobile,
so that the interior may be readily accessible. The interior is dlvlded into various compartments, as convenience may suggest, as
receptacles for needed utensils and appliances. A. pair of doors 10 and 11 close all of the open side except a receptacle 12 adapted to hold tools, or such articles as need to be reached with the least time and These doors, as will be seen, are hinged at the ends ofthe casing, and when swung open to the position shown in Fig. 3, serve as brackets to support the front flap of a table 13 pivoted at 14 to the top of the casing. In this position all the contents of the cabinet may be reached while it is in In the closed.
position on the automobile. position, as shown in Fig. 1 this flap folds down over the closed doors and the receptacle below, and over all is placeda telescoping cover 15, and the whole is firmly strapped in place, as above indicated.
At the ends of the casing are hinged, a
little way up from the bottom, flaps 16.
These are normally supported by turnebuttons 17 engaging the flaps in notches 18. These notches give access to'folding handies 19 by which the cabinet is carried.
the cover and easing may be provided with a lock, hereshown as asimple hasp and padlock 23. Y
In Figs. Land 5 the cabinet is shown as disposed for a picnic dinner. The end-flaps are folded down, raising the top ofthe cabinet tofa suitable table height. The threepart table is given a quarterturn, when all its sidesIproject beyond the'cabinet, the end The cover, which is of illustration) though in practice it would be more generally used at one side.
The entire cabinet is supposed to be made of sheet metal, and P p y Protected against rust and corrosion, as by a coat of enamel. Having thus described my invention, 1.
