This invention relates to combination tools and has special reference to a work bench for cabinet makers and other woodworkers.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of wood-workers work bench wherein the bench is convertible from an ordinary cabinet makers or'carpenters work bench for hand tools to a table or stand equipped with machine tools.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved bench of this class wherein the driving means for the machine tools may be readily moved into and out of operative position.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved'bench of this class wherein a circular saw may be quickly moved into and out of operative position so that the bench may be either used .for ordinary hand tools or may be used as a circular saw table. 1
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved bench of this class wherein other tools may be positioned for use in relation to the driving means with great ease.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in theseveral views, and;
Figure 1 is a plan view of atool bench constructed in accordance with this invention. V

Figure 4 is an end view with the operating shaft dropped part way down so that the parts are in position for use in circular sawing.

Figure 6 is a detail section on the line 6 6 of Figure a. p p I Figure, 7 is a detail section on the line 7-7 of Figure 2 but showing the parts arthe top by uprights 17 to which is bolted a guide plate 18 carrying a laterally spaced pair of guides 19. In these guides19 slide standards 20 and 21. These standards-carry at their upper ends bearings 22 which are normally alined below the slot 12 and in these bearings is supported a shaft 23 which carries on its rear end a cone pulley 24: and has between the bearings a cam 25 and beveled gear 26 which is preferably a spiral gear so that it may drive a shaft ofl centerfrom the center of the shaft 23. The end of the shaft 23 is threaded so that either a circular saw 27 may be fitted thereon as shown in Figure & or a drill chuck 28 may be used as shown in Figure 2. The lower end of the shaft 21 is enlarged and has boltedtheretoa motor 29 having a shaft 30 which extends through a bearing 31 onthe lower end ofthestandard 20. On this shaft 80 is a cone pulley 32 which is connected by a belt 33' with the cone pulley 24. Fixed to the motor 29' is a nut 34: through which passes'a' screw 35, the lower end of which rests on the floor. By means of this screw the motor maybe' raised or lowered and the screw acts as an adjustable limit stop to limit the downward'movement of the motor and the two shafts so that the parts may be positioned as shown in Figure 2 or as shown in Figure 4 or may be even dropped low enough so that the saw 27 will be entirely below the surface of the table 11. A lever 36 having offset ends has oneend provided with a roller 37 resting beneath the lower end of the standard 21 while its other end carries a pedal 38 and is arranged conveniently to the operators foot. By means of this lever a limited lift movement may be given to the motor and the two shafts so that when the saw 27 is housed below the table top it may betemporarily raised for sawing wood orwhen slightly raised may be raised to a greater extent for sawing a thicker piece.
On top of the table are arranged a series of positioning plates 39 having threaded bolt receiving openings 40 so that the bolts 41 of a jig saw 42 may be engaged in certain of these openings or the bolts 43 of lathe head I v and tail stocks 44. It will be noted that the jig saw 42 is provided with an operating lever 45 engaging the cam 25 when the jig saw is set up and that the head stock has its shaft provided with a spiral bevel 4C6 engaging the gear 26 when the device is arranged for use as a lathe. A steady rest 47 may be secured anywhere alongthe edge of the table by a clamp screw 48.

that these holes may be used for securing the tail-stock of the lathe in adjusted position near the edge of the bench so that the length of'the lathe may be suitably adjusted.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified. v
7 It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, def sired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but itis desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed. I f
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
.1. In combination, a*work bench having, a top provided with an opening therein, a
horizontally journaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, bearing standards slidable vertically in said guides and having bearings for said shaft at the upper ends of said standards, driving meansi for said shaft carried by andmovablewith the lower ends of said standards, and means to raise said standards and shaft to desired elevation. 2. In combination, a work bench having a top proviedwith an opening therein, a horizontallyjournaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, bearing standards slidable, vertically in said guides and having bearings for saidshaft at; the
upper ends of said standards, driving means for said'shaft carried byand movable with the lower ends of said standards, means to adjust the lower limit of movement of said shaft,'and pedal operated means for temporarily lifting said shaft.
3. In combination, a work bench having a top provided with an opening therein, a horizontally journaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, bearing standards slidable vertically in said guides andhaving bearings for said shaft at the upper ends of said standards, driving means for said shaft carried by and movable with the lower ends of said standards, an adjusting screw carried by the-driving means and having its lower endv adapted to engage a fixed ob ect, and a'pedal lever journaled on the bench and having'one end engaged beneath the vertically movable parts and its other end positioned for engagement by the operators foot. horizontally journaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, bearing standards slidable vertically in said guides and having bearings for said shaft at the upper ends of said standards, a motor and its shaft carried by and movable vertically with the lower ends of said standards, belt pulleys on the first shaft and motor shaft, a belt connecting" said pulleys, an ad, justing screw carried by the motor and having its lower end engageable with a fixed object, and a pedal lever journaled intermediate its ends to the'work bench and-hav lat ing one arm extending beneath the motor and its other arm positioned for engagement by a foot of the operator.
7. In combination, a work bench having a top provided with an-opening therein, a horizontally journaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, hearing standards slidable vertically in said guides and having bearings for said shaft at the upper ends of said standards, a motor and its shaft carried by and movable vertically with the lower ends of said standards, belt pulleys on the first shaft and motor shaft, a belt connecting said pulleys, means to raise the motor and other movable parts to desired elevation, and spaced sockets on the bench top whereby removable tools may be positioned in operative relation to the first shaft.

In combination, a work bench having a top provided with an opening therein, a horizontally journaled shaft for tool operating elements, guides below said top, bearing standards slidable vertically in said guides and having bearings for said shaft at the upper ends of said standards, a motor and its shaft carried by and movable vertically with the lower ends of said standards, belt pulleys on the first shaft and motor shaft, a belt connecting said pulleys, means to adjust the lower limit of movement of the motor and first shaft, pedal operated means for temporarily lifting the motor and first shaft, and spaced sockets on the bench to whereby removable tools may be positioned in operative relation to the first shaft.
