This invention relates to control hinges, and more particularly to adjusters for swinging easements, transoms: and the like, and it is an object of this invention to provide a device which may be attached .to the jamb adjacent the swinging casement and which is attachable to the'casement itself indicated which can be readily made of.

A still further object is to providea novel construction of control. hinge, whereby in the act of swinging the easement, a powerful 5 leverage is exerted on the same in the direction of the opening or'closing thereof, to readily startthe same from the jamb as the pressure exerted is applied thereto manually.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a devicewhich is strong and durable in construction, operates efiiciently and is well adapted to perform the services re quired of the same.
With these and many other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention-is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will hereinafter he more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the carrying out of the objects indicated are susceptible to modification; but a preferred embodiment ofthe invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in

while the ,various elements thereof may be constructed in any suitable manner and of any suitable material, yet it is preferable to form the hinge of sheet-metal stampingson account of the cheapness, lightness and strength of thelatter; but irrespective of these details in manufacturing, the essential features of the invention are alwayspreserved.
:The device involves in its general zation,:a hinge having leaves or sections '1 and 2. The sectionl being applied tothe jamb 3 of a casement in the manner-inch cated inFigure 1, and the section 2 being applied to the casement itself as shown in this same figure. The section 1 is preferably in the form of. a substantially Z-shaped stamping having aport-ion 4 attached to-the jamb, a central portion 5 through which thereis an aperture 6 and a portion 7, the outer end of which is curved to form a ournal for a pintle 8. The section2 of the hinge is preferably in the form of. a slightly bentmetal stampinghavinga portion 9 attached to the. easement and a portion 10, the
-- outer end of which is rounded in the manner -s1m1lar to which the portion 7.0f the section 1 is rounded, alsov to receive the pintle 8. Cut-out portions13 and 14 are formed in organ? each of the. hinge sections to provide a space wherein a pairof beveled gears may operate-and which'will be described at apoint later in'this specification. Second cut-out portions 15and 161a're formed on adjacent edges of each of the :hinge sectionsrespectively, so that the sectionsmay, be complementary and cooperate upon thepintle to form a hinge having perfect alignment with respect to the pintle 8. The various cut-out portions in the hinge are so arranged that each section may be reversed upon the other to permit opposite swinging of a casement if ,the same is necessary. Loosely mounted onthe pintle 8 which acts as a shaft therefor, is a beveled gear having a pair of. lugs 21 and 22, and a supporting shank 27. These'lugs 21 and 22 are spaced a slight distance apart and receive the upper edge of the cut-out portion 13 in the'section 1. Extending through the jamb 3 of the casement is a shaft 23 having on the outer end thereof a bearing 24. The outer end ofthis shaft is squared as at 25 to receive a square, apertured crank-handle 26. A coil-spring is disposed around this squared portion and a friction disc 29 abuts against the coils spring and the bearing 24 fora purpose to" The inner end of be described hereinafter. I the shaft 23 has thereon, a beveled gear 28 having teeth which engage the teeth of the beveled gear so that rotation of the gear 28 will cause rotation of the gear 20 and con sequently of the casement itself. From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of the herein described control hinge will be apparent without further description of the parts, and the operation of this device v will now be described.
