Description

March 13, 1928.
o. J. JONES SECTIONAL FURNACE GRATE Filed June 22. 1926 K: 1 min a 1 1 mrvlv u fm m k Patented Mar. 13, 1928.
UNITED STATES ORVILLE J. JONES, OF EMMETT, IDAHO.
SEGTIONAL FURNACE GRATE.
Application filed June 22, 1926.
This invention relates to sectional grate bars, and has for one of its objects to provide a device of this character which shall have the sections thereof hinged together in a manner to prevent strain on the hinge pins and which cannot be affected by heat in a manner to cause the warping or sagging thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a grate bar constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the grate 29 bar, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters.
The grate bar comprises terminal sections 1 and intermediate sections 2. Each of the sections 1 and 2 comprises sides 3 and diag onal ribs 4 which are formed integrally and of which the latter project beyond the former. The terminal sections 1 are pro vided at their outer ends with supporting lugs 5, and the lower portions of the inner ends of the sides 3 of one of these sections are extended and formed to provide circular ears 6. ends of the sides 3 of the other terminal extension 1 are offset inwardly and formed. to provide circular ears 7 and arcuate shoulders 8. The lower portions of certain adjacent ends of the sides of each of the intermediate sections 2 are extended and formed to pro- 4 vide circular ears 9, and the lower portions of the other ends of these sides are offset inwardly and formed to provide circular cars 10 and arcuate shoulders 11. The ears of one section contact with those of another, the shoulders of one section contact with and The lower portions of the inner Serial No. 117,788.
rest upon the ears of another, and the sections are hinged together by pins 12. Those portions of the adjacent edges of the sides 3 which are located above the ears and beyond which the ears extend longitudinally, are vertically arranged and contact with each other.
As the shoulders 8 and 11 rest upon the ears 6 and 9, and as the adjacent ends of the sides 3 contact above the hinge pins 12, the weight borne by the grate bar is pro vented from having a shearing action upon the hinge pins. Furthermore, the connection between the sections 1 and 2 is such as to prevent them from warping or sagging under the action of'heat thereon. The grate bar may be made of any required length, and a grate bar of any length may be provided with three or more sections, and the sections may be readily assembled and connected.
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is A grate bar comprising terminal sections having sides provided at the inner ends of the sections with vertical edges and with circular ears located below said edges and extending longitudinally beyond the same, intermediate sections having sides provided at the ends of the sections with vertical edges and with circular ears located below said edges and extending longitudinally beyond the same, ears of one terminal section and the ears at one end of each intermediate section being laterally offset to permit them to be arranged in overlapped relation with respect to the remaining ears and to provide arcuate shoulders contacting with the upper sides of the remaining ears, and pivotpins passing through the ears.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature.
ORVILLE J. JONES.
