UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L; HENDRICKS, OF SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED BOOK PROTECTOR AND MARKER.
Application filed August 5, 1927. Serial No. 210,923.
the reader can positively identify the last page read.
An additional object of this invention is to provide combined book protector and marker that is economical to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, positive in operation and highly serviceable in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. v p
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device per se, V
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of a book and its protecting cover, showing the device applied to the cover and the indicating means inserted between the pages of the book, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a book without a paper cover showing the device applied to the book.
It oftentimes happens that in the reading of a book the page that was last read cannot be identified. Furthermore the practice has been often resorted to of folding over or dog-caring the edge of the page for the purpose of identifying the last reading point. This folding over of the edge of the page tends to mutilate the book. In addition to this fact, it often occursthat the cleanliness of the book cover is desired. to be preserved.
It is not always possible, unless the paper cover is kept intact thereon.
' I have therefore devlsed an article which will positively assure the retention of the paper cover. of the book, and at the same time have combined with the device a marking element in the form of a tape which when inserted between the pages of the book, will positively identify the page when the book.
reading of that section of the book was discontinued.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 4 designates a book having the usual back 5 and a paper cover 6. To the book there is secured my device which embodies in its construction a clip 7 having its extremity 8 bent as at!) so as to provide means for securing the clip to one section of the book cover 6.
To the clip 7 there is secured one end of a tape 11, which extends around the back and terminates in a marking element 12 adapted to be book.
This tape carriesthereon a second clip 14 of similar formation to the clip 17 with the inserted between the pages 13 of the exception that the clip 14 is provided with apertures 15 and 16 therein, through which a portion of the tape is trained. This construction permits the clip 14 to be slidably positioned on the tape so that the device is readily applicable to books of varying clip 14 is adjusted on the opposite port-ion of the cover and the marking portion 12 readily inserted where desired between the pages of the book to be marked.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simply constructed device which will read ily accomplish the objects set forth and because of its ornamental appearance will in no wise detract from the appearance of the It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be, taken as va preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to comprising a tape element, a clip secured to one end of said tape element, a second clip slidably mounted on said tape element, and 10 page marking means carried by said element.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' CHARLES L. HENDRICKS.
