Application tiled Jane if,
This invention relates to in'iprovements in drilling devices, the general object of the invention being to provide means for giving a rota y shaft hammer-litre blows as the shalt is being rotated so as to incr ase the cutting action oi the hit carried by the shaft. l :lurther object ot the invention is to a provide means whereby the hammer n'ieans are rendered inactive whenever desired.
This invention also consists in certain other lieatures oi constrmjztion and in the combination and arrangement oi the several parts, to he hereinafter fully desciabed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
in describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is an elevation, with parts in section.
lleterring to the d awing, 1 indicates the rotary shaft which may be rotated from any suitable source and which is adapted to be suitably connected with a hit or other tool. 2 indicates a collar which is fastened to the shat't by a pin 3 and this collar is termed With the rack teeth a. Each tooth is provided with a slanting wall and a straight wall. A collar 5, having similarly shaped teeth 6, is rotatably mounted on the shaft with its teeth engaging the teeth of the col lar 2. it coil-ed spring 7 is placed on the shalt and has one end engaging a notch 8 termed in the collar and its other end en raining a notch 9 formed in a collar '10 on the shaft, this collar 10 being held against rotary movemei'it hy one or more projections ll thereon engaging a notch 12 termed in the boss 13 oil the frame 14 ot the device.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that as the shaft is rotated, the spring 7 will be held against rotation by means ot the stationar collar it) and this spring will in turn hold the collar 5 against movement. 'llhus as the collar 2 moves With the shaft, its teeth will ride up the inclined walls of the teeth ti ot the collar 5, thus pushing said collar 5 back against the pressure oi the spring it until the teeth a of collar 2 pass over the inclined walls oil the teeth 6 oi collar 5, when the pressure oil the spring 7 on collar will throw the collar 5 forwardly against the collar 21 with considerable force and thus produce a hammcrdilze blow on the collar 2 which is transmitted to the shaft. These blows come in rapid succession so that the cutting; action ot the tool is increased by these hlovvs. l i hen the hammer action is not desired, the collar 10 can be pushed for- \vardly on the shaft until its projection 11 leaves the recess l2 and a hole in collar ll) registers with a hole ill in the shaft so that a pin it can he placed in these holes to hold the collar 10 in this position. Then the collar H), together with collar 5 and sprn I, will simply rotate with the shaft and no blows are given the shaft. When the pin is not in use, it can be attached by a chain toa part of the frame lei.
llhile this invention is mainly designed tor use on coal mining" machines, it will, of course, he nderstood that it can be used on other machines where a hammering effect is to he produced on a rotary shalt.
i is thought from the :loregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. in con'ihination with a rotary shalt, a toothed collar attached thereto, a second toothed collar loosely mounted on the shalt and having its teeth engaging the teeth of the lirst collar, a third collar on the shaft, means for holding the same against rotary movement, the second collar and the third collar having notches therein and a coiled spring on the shatt having its ends engaginp; the notches.
2. In combination with a rotary shalt, a toothed collar attached thereto, a second toothed collar loosely mounted on the shaft and having; its teeth engaig;mg; the teeth of the first collar, a third collar on the shatt, means for holding the same against rotary movement, the second collar and the third collar having notches therein. a coiled spring on the shaft having its ends engaging the notches and means for fastening); the third collar to the shaft, when desired, so that said collar "will rotate With the shaft.
in testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
