ADJUSTABLE EXTENSIGN-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB L. E. KLINGBEIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska,
"have invented certain new and useful Im- Patent Number 1,390,621 issued to me on the th day of September, 1921, and it has for its object to provide a handle consisting of two parts adapted to be thrown to varying angles with relation to each other and locked in adjusted position to thereafter constitute a rigid member by which motlon may be imparted to some other part. A handle of this type is of very general application.
- There are many places where it is desirable to actuate a part byhand but where the space within which one is able to work 1s so limited that a long handle cannot be given the necessary movement. A handle of the type comprising the subject matter of the present invention is useful in connection with automobile jacks, automobile spring spreading devices, ratchet drills, wrenches and in many other places.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an extension handle constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing. Referring to the drawing 5 designates av handle which may be the operating handle of a ratchet drill, a part of a wrench or any other tool handle which has a swinging movement in operation. This handle may be provided with an angular opening 6 or other suitable part to engage the part to be actuated. A yoke 7 carries a set screw 8, said set screw serving to bind the yoke at any desired position of adjustment upon the handle 5. segmental gear 9 provided with gear teeth 10 is pivoted in the yoke at 11 and is provided with an elongated handle 12. A block 13 is movable through the yoke and constitutes in effect a double wedge, comprising the wedges 13 and 13 The block 13 has a straight wall 1 1 on its side ad acent the handle 5 and its opposite face is provided with teeth 15 and 15 adapted to be engaged by teeth 10 of the segmental gear 9. Links 16 and 17 are pivoted at 18 and 19 to the opposite ends of the block 13 and are slotted at 20 and 21 respectively, for the passage of a threaded stud 22 which is engaged by thumb nuts 23 and 24 which serve to bind the links against movement.
The links 16 and 17 serve the double purpose of holding the wedge block 18 in assembled relation with the rest of the structure and preventing it from falling out of' place and of binding the handle 12 against movement with respect to the wedge block after the parts are onge adjusted.
Vhen the handle 12 is brought into longitudinal alinement with the yoke 7 and the narrowest part of the wedge block is at the center of the yoke, the wedge block may be shifted up or down to bring it into engagement with the teeth 10. This permits a change in the, meshing of the teeth to be effected and thus renders it possible to throw 12 to a number of positions of angularity with respect to the handle 5 before the wedge block comes to its seating. One such position of adjustment is illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1 and another such position of adjustment is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and this differenceis brought about by making a change of one tooth in the meshing of the teeth upon the gear 10 with the teeth upon the wedge block.
It is manifest that by pulling upon the handle 12 to cause the teeth 10 to force the wedge block 13 through the yoke, said wedge block, as its wider portions travel into the yoke will be bound firmly against the handle 5 and after this action takes place the thumb nuts 23 and 2 1 are tightened and thereafter the handle 12 may be either pushed upon or pulled upon to actuate handle 5 without dislodging the wedge, because movement of the segmental gear 10 with respect to the wedge is prevented by the links 16 and 17.
The fact that the wedge block is of double formation permits adjustment of the handle 12 upon both sides of a position at right angles to handle 5. Thus it will be seen that the handle 12 may be adjusted to a number of positions of angularity with rewith respect to each other,
spect to the handle 5 and that in such adjusted position it may exercise either a pushing or a pulling movement upon the handle 5.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but it includes within its purview Whatever changes fairly come Within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described -my invention, What I claim is:
1. A handle comprising two parts adapted to be adjusted to positions of angularity a double wedge between said parts and interengaging means between said wedge and the end of one of said parts to move said wedge to position to bind the parts against movement with respect to each other.
2. A structure as recited in claim 1 in combination with means for holding the last named part against movement with respect to said wedge after it has been moved to adjusted position.
3. A, two part handle comprising a first 'part and a second part adjustable to varylng positions of angularity with respect to each other, teeth upon the end of the second part and a two part wedge having teeth adapted to be engaged by the teeth of said part. 7
4. A structure as recited in claim 3 in combination with slotted links pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said two part wedge and means for binding said links against movement.
5. A handle of the character described comprising a first part and a second part,
a yoke adapted to embrace the first part, a double wedge movable through said yoke and having teeth upon its inner-edge, teeth upon the end of the second part adapted to engage the teeth of the wedge and means for holding the second part against movement with respect to the wedge.
(3. A structure as recited in claim 5 wherein said holding means comprises slotted links pivotally connected to the op posite ends of the wedge and thumb nuts upon the second part of the handle for binding said slotted links against movement.
'7. A handle of the character described comprising a first part and a second part, a yoke adapted to embrace the first part, means for binding the first part against movement with respect to said yoke a wedge block movable through said yoke and having a straight forward edge adapted to bind against the adjacent edge of the said first part of the handle teeth upon the rear edge of the wedge block, teeth upon the end of the second part of the handle adapted to engage with the teeth of the wedge block, slotted links pivotally posite ends of the wedge block and means upon the second part of the handle with respect to which said links are adapted to slide and which means are adapted to bind the links against movement with respect to the second part of the handle.
