Description

Dec. 13', 1927. 1,352,823' S. R. FRAI M LOCKING DEVICE Filed June 4, 1926 ing 1.
Patented Dec. 13, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LO CKING DEVICE.
Application filed June 4,
This invention relates in general to locking devices and has more particular reference to improvements in combined padlock and chain construction.
The object of my invention is to provide a padlock with a shackle of the hinged or swinging type with one end of a chain secured to the shackle in such a manner as to avoid separation of the padlock casing, shackle, and chain.
The specific purpose of this construction is in connection with its adaptability for use in locking spare tires on automobiles where the fixed relation of the casing shackle, and chain is important. Various other uses of my device, however, are obvious.
To this end I propose to provide a padlock with a shackle having one leg rotatably secured to the casing, the other being releasable for locking and unlocking purposes. I propose to pass one end of the chain over the shackle and subsequently a specially arranged ring of excentric proportions around the shackle, the shackle being so constructed that the tap of a hammer on the ring will fix the latter to the shackle and retain the chain thereon.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combination of parts and in the details of construction, hereinafter set forth in the description and appended claims, certain embodiments thereof being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the padlock and retaining chain in locked relation;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the padlock with the chain fixed to one leg of the shackle and the padlock in unlocked position;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the shackle;
Figure at is a planview of the ring.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the shackle has one leg 2 permanently secured to and rotatably mounted in the cas- Suitable mechanism within the casing may be employed for engaging the groove 7 for preventing withdrawal of the shackle.
A recess 2 is formed in the leg 2 of the shackle. WVhen the lock is in opened position the end 4: of the chain is passed over both legs 3 and 2 of the shackle until it rests on the casing as shown in Figure 1. A ring 1926. Serial No. 113,678.
5 having an aperture 6 and an eccentric portion 5', is then passed over the legs 3 and 2 behind the chain. The ring is then placed over the notch 2 in such a manner that the eccentric portion is directly opposite the notch 2. The ring being necessarily of malleable metal, a sharp blow on the eccentric 5 forces the ring to engage the notch 2.
This operation renders the ring practically circular in form and securely fastens the ring to the shackle, and consequently acts as a retaining flange in preventing the removal of the chain from the padlock assembly. In employing the combined structure for the desired purpose it is only necessary to pass the end 4 of the chain over the leg 3 and push downwardly on the shackle snapping the lock closed. 7
It will be readily realized that by this novel construction there has been provided a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient method and means for accomplishing an important and desired result in the art of spare-tire locking mechanism, to which the invention is particularly adaptable.
It is granted that padlocks andchains,
per se are old in the art, but this invention is concerned with the specific combination thereof for a certain result and moreover the method of simplifying the operation of arranging same in their proper relation for the desired result hereinbefore set forth.
I claim- 1. A locking device comprising a padlock, a chain and a ring, said padlock having one leg secured to the casing of said padlock, said leg having a notch formed therein, one end of said chain being adapted to encircle said leg, said ring being fixed in said notch in superimposed relationship to said chain, the other end of said chain being adapted to be passed over the other leg of said shackle and releasably locked to said padlock.
2. The combination with a padlock, of a. shackle, one leg of which is permanently secured to the casing of said padlock, said leg having a ring of relatively larger diameter secured thereto, and a retaining chain, one end of which encircles said leg and held in place between said ring and said casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
