Be it known that I, Poems WV. FUNs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlyle, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Seals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvementsin locks and seals and has for its primary object the provision of means adapted to fasten a door in a closed position and which cannot be opened without breaking the seal. thereby providing a device es pecially adaptable for sealing railway cars and other vehicles.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a bolt adapted to receive an endless seal and extends into a keeper and held against retraction until its end is movedbeyond the keeper which destroys or mutilates the seal, indicating that the bolt has been retracted or tampered with.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a lock and seal of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly operated and which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

lVith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds. the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combi nation. and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view illustrating a lock and seal constructed in accordance with my invention applied to a door frame.

Referring; in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a base adapted to be secured to a door frame 2 by suitable fasteningelements 3 and said base has secured thereto a. casing: 4L by means of cars 5 that rest on the base 1 and are secured thereto by rivets or like fasteners 6. The end walls of the casing 4 have alining openings 7 to slidably receive a lOClCiIig bolt 8. one end of which h s detachably secured thereto a handle 9. The handle 9 is preferably secured to the locking bolt 8 by means of a pin 10 extending through said handle and bolt and which may be headed so as to prevent the removal o'l" the handle 9 by an unauthorized person. The other end or the locking end of the bolt 8 has a slot 11 which opens outwardly through said end of: the belt for the purpose of receivinga seal The seal 12 is of. endless formation and constructed from comparatively thin metal: A rib 13 is also formed on the locking end of the bolt adjacent the slot 11. A. substantially U-shaped locking spring 1% is secured to the base 1 within the casingt by fasteninn elements 15 and has its ends disposed in engagement with the bolt 8 and said spring is slightly under tension by being in engagement with the bolt. A locking: notch 16 is formed in the bolt 8 within the casing: and has a straight shoulder 17 adapted to be engaged by one nd of the spring M to pre ent the bolt from being' retracted when said bolt is in one position. The bolt is free for sliding movement in the casing -lwhen the notch is disengaged from the spring 141- by turning the bolt 8 within the casino by the handle.

A keeper 18 is formed on one end of the base 1 and is provided with a circular opening 21 to receive the locking end of the bolt 8. A hasp 20 is connected to the door 2 and is adapted to be placed over the keeper prior to inserting the bolt therein. Radially eX- tending slots or notches 22 and 23 are formed in the keeper 18 and communicate with the circular opening 21 and are adapted to receive the rib 13 formed on the locking bolt to prevent rotation or turning movement of the locking bolt when the lockln end 1s disposed, Within the keeper.

slot 22 which prevents further rotation of the locking bolt. hen the locking bolt is in this position, one end of the spring 14 engages the notch 16 and prevents the bolt from being retracted, thus it will be seen that the door is firmly locked and that the seal cannot be removed without mutilating the same.

To unlock the door, the seal is broken and removed from the slot 11 and the bolt 8 is then pushed further in the direction of the keeper 18 until the rib 13 moves beyond the keeper and out of engagement with the notch or slot 22 then the bolt 18 is rotated by the handle alining the rib with the notch or slot 23 and then the bolt may be retracted as the notch 18 is moved out of the path of the end of the spring 14.

A notch 24; is formed in the bolt 8 within the casing and angularly to the notch 16 and has a straight shoulder which is disposed in an opposite direction from the straight shoulder 17 of the notch 18 and when the bolt is retracted, the notch passes beyond one end of the spring and if through accident the bolt 8 is moved in the direction ofthe keeper with the rib 13 in alinement with the-slot or notch 23, the end of the spring engages the notch 24 or the straight shoulder thereof and prevents further movement of the bolt 8 in the direction of the keeper, thereby obviating any danger of moving the bolt 8 into the keeper with the rib in the wrong notch.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that the necessity of using tools for joining the ends of seals is entirely obviated as the railroad" company may furnish the various agencies with the endless seals and said seals can be applied to the lock withoutthe employment of a tool as is now customary.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7 i

Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a lock, a keeper to receive an article for fastening, a turnable and slidable bolt, said keeper having an opening and notches in communication therewith a seal applicable to the bolt before extension into the opening of the keeper to limit its projection therethrough, a rib on said bolt to extend into either of the notches, means to hold the bolt against rotation with the rib disposed in one of the notches, said bolt being movable after removal of the seal out of one notch into the other to permit retraction without interference by said means.
