The present invention relates to lasts and more particularly. to the type where the fore part and the heel part areconnected for relative movement. An object of this invention is to provide anzimproved construction whereby the last is locked yieldingly' man expanded Condition. Anotherobjectof this inventlon 18 to provide a construction in v which a roller. on one part cooperates with a yieldlng surface on another part for the purpose of holding the last in an expanded condition; Still another object ofthe -invention is to provide a construction in which the last parts are 'pivotally connected by a bonding plate which carries a surface extending laterallyifroin opposite sides of the plate for cooperating with a resilient device" to hold the last inv an expanded'positimi.
Still a further objectof the invention is to provide, in a hinge last which has a resilient device on one part engaged by a surface on v another part to hold the, last expanded,v a 7 construction of the resilient memberengagr' out inthe appended Claims.

Fig. 3 is aflview similar to Fig. 1' showing the bOIldlDgnlGHlbGr and the resilient mem- Fig. 4 is afragmentary section through the two last parts showing the metal parts in plan.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment ofthe invention, 1 indicates the fore part ed to the fore part and through pins 5 is rigidly connected to the heel part, the fore part having a kerf 6 in whichthe plate op crates and the heel part having akerf 7 in which thebonding plate is held. In orderv ,toremove the strain from the pivot 4., 00-
operating 7 bearing surfaces are provided on the fore part and the heel part. In this instance, a convex cylindrical surface 8 is p V 7 'rormed on opposite sldes of the kerf 6 concentric with the center of the pivot pin 4 and a concave cylindrical surface 9 is formedon theheel part 2fconcentric with said pivot pine, so that with the turning of the last- -parts relatively the plate 13 turns on the pin a and the-heel part'bearing 9 turns on the convex bearingsurface-S of thefore part.
With the end innview of lockingthe last in an expanded condition, locking means is employed which, in this instance, embodies 'a resilient device preferably carried by the fore part and preferably in the form of a split. resilient metal tube 10 extending transversely of the last in eccentric relation to the pivot pin 4, for bridging thekerf 6, the plate 3 having a slot 11 which permits the movement of the heelpart relatively to the transversely extending tube '10. Mounted on the heel part is a device which cooperates with the resilient tube .or device to hold the-last in. an expanded condition. This device,-in this instance, is in the form of a roller. 12 mounted to turnin a recess '13 in the plate 3, said recess communicating withsthe slot 11' and being of segmental ciro X at such a distance. that, when thelastis vFig. l is a fragmentary section'of a last showing the latterinanexpanded-conch? tion; w r
Fig. 2. is a. similar view showing the last moved toward expanded condition, the pe- -riphery of -this roller 12 will-engage with the yielding and resilient device 10 and place while still engaging the tube will have i v passed over the high point of the tube and ber engaging-device thereon removed; and
the last will be'yieldinglyheld in expanded condition; Upon the collapsing of the last, .the roller moves over'the yielding and resilient tube 10 to a position out of engage ment with said tube, as illustrated in: Fig.-
2. The roller extends from opposite sides face is provided which is Wider than the plate, and, as a consequence, the wearing .on the yielding and resilient device 10 is re--. .duced to a minimum and, at the same time, movement of the last'to and from expanded condition is facilitated as the roller turns cular form, its wall being more than 180 in passing over the high point of the yieldl.
