VANITY CASE.

Application filed October 27, 1925. Serial No. 65,184.

The. object of our invention is to provide novel types of vanity cases having a novel hinged member, which may be either a lid for automatically operating a sifting plate whereby to supply asmall-quantity of face powder toV an accessible portion of the case when the hinged memberl is raised. It is also an object of our invention to provide a case of this type which is'compact and which. will not allow thel powder to si through except when it is desired.

We attain these and other objects of our invention by the device illustrated in thel vaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of our case with, the lid open;

Referring particularl to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, we provi e a case 1, having a detachable bottom 2, within which is contained a suitable spring 18 which presses u wardly against a plate 17, on which is p aced the face powder'19. The bod of the case 1 is provided with an annular ange 6,

has perforations 8 for the powder to sift We provide a suitable mirror 5 on the inside of the lid 3, as shown in Fig. 1. `Wev may provide a rouge cake 23 in the lid 3 as lillustrated in Fig. 1, or we may 'provide a mirror only as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

The. operation of the device is as follows:

The removable bottom 2 is unscrewed from the case 1, and a'suitable suppl of owder 19 is placed on the plate 17, an the ottom is then screwed back' in place, the spring 18 tending to press the plate 17 and the powder upwardly. When the lid 3 is opened, the movable plate 12 is pulled along, thus causing the openings13 in plate 12, and the openings 6 in top 7, to come into communication,`momentarily allowing a small amount of powder to sift through to the face of the case top 7, where it is accessible 'for use. At the same time, the mirror 5 and lid 3 are in position for convenient use, as the tongue 15 of plate 12, which is hinged to the lid 3 at 16, also functions to limit the extent to which lid 3 may be opened.

It is within the contemplation of our invention to modify the arrangement or positioning of the mirror in the case, or to provide a modified type of detachable bottom, or a modified type of spring. We believe the automatic sifting of the powder to be broadly new.

Referring to -the modified form of our invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, the construction of this case is subst-antially the same as that illustrated in Figs. 1-4 except asl to thefollowing details: We omit the hinged connection .16 of tongue 15 lon lid 3 and instead provide a stud 20 on loo This pressure is maintained by from the conventional snap clasp which holds the lid in locked or closedv position. Referring to the preferred form of our invention illustrated in Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive, we provide' in perforated plate'12 a series of apertures 24 engageable by the teeth of a star wheel segment 25 which is swingably ymounted on a small stud shaft 26 mounted in a bracket 27 aiixed to the perforated top 7. Ajflxed to star wheel segment 25 is a swingable member 28which may be either in the form of amirror, thelid 3 carrying a small cake of rouge, as illustrated in Fig. 9, orthe arrangement may be reversed and the swingable cover member 28 may carry aV rouge cake while the lid 3 carries a full mirror 5, as i1- lustrated inlFigs. 10 and .11. It is within the contemplationof our invention to make this member a plain plate or a rouge carry- 'ing plate 29a, as shown in Figs.- 10 and 11, instead of a mirror 28 as shown in Fig. 10,

while retaining its function -as an operating member for the sifting plate' 12. In consequence ofthis. combination of elements it is slidably mounted' beneath the top, and` case, a

Whatwe claim is:

. 1. The combination of a vanity case having a perforated top, Ia perforated plate adapted to force powder through the perforations in the top, a cover member hingedly Amounted on the case, and means pivotally connecting the perforated slidable plate to the cover member.

2. In a vanity case, the combination of a case, a bottom removably mounted'on the late for carrying powder movably mounte within the case, a spring pressing the plate toward the top of the case,'a perforated top through which powder may sift,

a perforated slidable plate mounted immediately beneath the perforated top, a

cover member hingedly mounted on the case, and means operatively connecting the slidable plate with the cover member to op- 'erate the slidable plate whenever the cover member is opened, the perforations in the cover member and perforated top being arranged to register with each other and permit face powder to sift through when the case, whereby the said plate will be operated when the lid -is opened.-

The combination of a 4vanity case, a perforated plate, a member holding the perforated plate on the case in position over the powder, a swingable cover member, means operatively connectin the swingable cover. member with4 the per orated plate whereby the opening of said cover member will also operate the lplate to sift powder therethrough,

and a lid hingedly mounted on the case and I operating independently of the lower cover member connected to the slidable plate.

7. The combination of a vanity case, a perforated plate, a member holding the -pe-rforated plate on the case in position over the powder, a swinga-ble cover-(member, means operatively connecting the swingablecover member with the perforated plate whereby the opening o f said cover member will also operate the plate to sift powder therethrough, and a lid hingedly mounted on the case and operating independently of the cover member connected to the slidable plate,

one of the aforesaid members carrying a rouge pad and the other of the aforesaid cover members carrying a mirror. 8.I The combination of a vanity case, a perforated plate slidably mounted over the portion lof the case containing the powder, a perforated top under which the slidable plate is operatively mounted, a star segment swingably mounted on the top, a cover member affixed to the star segment, and the teeth of said starsegment operatively engaging perforations in the perforated plate.

10.` In combination with the device described in claim 8, an outer cover member hingedly mounted on the vanity case, a rouge pad, and a mirror, the rouge pad bein'g aiixed to one of the aforesaid cover members and the mirror being aiiixed to the other of the aforesaid cover members.

11. A lvanity'case including a body-havin a powder compartment, iicombination witg a perforated powder'plate carried bythe body and reciprocably shiftable` relatively to the compartment, a cover member hinged to thebody -for pivotal movement, an extensionupon the platehaving hinged connection withthe cover member, whereby the plate is automatically shifted on hmged movement of the cover member, and a yie ding member for pressing the contained powder in said compartment towards said plate.

12. A vanity caseincluding a body having a base wall and an open end powder compartment, in combination with a perforated plate carried by the body and reciprocably shiftable,relatively to the compartment, a

cover member hinged to the body for pivotal movement, an extension upon the plate having hinged connection with the cover member, .whereby the plate is automatically shifted on hinged movement of the cover member, a bottom plate disposed for movement, and providing a support for the .powder contained, within the compartment,

and a spring interposed between said bottom late and basewall for yieldingly supporting the bottom wall within the compartment.
