BUILDING COLUMN.
Application filed July 14, 1921. Serial N'o. 484,720.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J one: LALLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Building Columns, of whic i the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in building columns of the built-up type which are generally reinforced with plastic filling and it is my object to simplify, strengthen and improve columns of the type disclosed in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,185,207, dated May 30, 1916.
In the columns disclosed in that patent the casing or body of the column was slotted and the supporting brackets were inserted in the slots with their inner portions embedded in the plastic filling. In Fig. 11 of said patent stops to prevent the spreading of the casing at the slots were disclosed.
Under ordinary conditions these columns proved satisfactory in use but it was found that when extreme loads were carried by them there was a tendency for the slots in the casing to open thereby destroying to a great extent the load carrying capacity of the column.
I have. finally overcome this defect in the manner shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view, partly in section, of my improved construction with one bracket; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the structure of Fi 1; Fig. 3 a view, partly in section, of a ouble bracket construction; and Fi 4 a view, partly in section, of a modifie tie rod construction.
The column comprises the usual casin 1 formed of steel tubing or iron pipe am? is slotted at or near one end at 2. A bracket 3, formed preferably of flat rolled stock, is inserted in the slot 2 which is just wide enough to receive it. This bracket may be plain, as shown and described herein or hooked as shown in my Patent N 0. 1,185,207.
The edges of the slot in the pipe are then welded tothe side faces of the bracket, making thecasing as strong as it was before slotting.
A top plate 4 is laid onto the end of the casing, resting on the bracket 3 and may be secured in place by tie rods 5 and 6, preferably provided with flared heads engaging tapered holes in the top plate. The top plate may be welded to the casing edge alone in which event it will effectually prcvent spreadin and opening of the slots, and the tie rods may then be omitted.
If desired the top edge of the bracket may be welded to the under side of the top plate and the slot edges welded to the sides of the bracket and in this event also the tie rods may be omitted.
As shown in Fig. 3 the slots may be out opposite each other and a double bracket 3 set in the slots and welded thereto and may also be welded to the under side of the top plate. The top plate mayalso be welded to the casing end.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a top plate provided with tie rods 5 which are bent at their dependingends and project through holes in the casing, the ro ecting ends bein threaded and secured with nuts 7.

If the bracket and plate welding is done before the cap is set in the casing slots the welding will extend clear across the top ed e of the bracket but if it is done after the rackets and top plate are in position it will be exterior to the casing.
By using rolled stock for brackets and top plates I am enabled to construct columns and top plates of any desired size and am not limited to the small sizes which are pos sible with structural rolled shapes like T- and L-beams although the latter may be used if desired.
As the portions of the brackets within the casing are embedded in the plastic filling they aid in resisting the thrust due to load- 'Fhe gist of my invention lies in so welding the brackets or top plate or both to the slotted casing that all tendency for the slots to spread under load is prevented.
I claim 1. A building column comprising a casing provided with a slot, a bracket in the slot, the edges of the slot and side faces of the bracket being welded together, a top plate resting on the casing and bracket with its under side welded to the top edge of the bracket and a plastic filling within the casing.
2. A building column comprising a casing provided with a slot, a bracket in said slot, partly within and partly without said casing, the edges of the slot being welded to the side faces of the bracket, a top plate resting on the bracket and casing endwith its under side welded to the bracket and casing end and a plastic filling within the casing.
