Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. SoHLoz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Toledo, in the county of-Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and 'useful "ioggle Press, which invention is fully set forth in the followingspecification.
This invention'relates to toggle presses and particularly to the blank-holder operating mechanism thereof, whereby the blank-holder is raised and loweredin properely timed relation to the movementsof the die-carrying plunger and is caused to have a predetermined dwell in holding relation to the blank during the blank-shaping operation of the plunger. I
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a mechanism of the class described, the slide member of which is centrally disposed within the press frame and centrally connected with respectto both the shaft by which it is driven and the shafts 'which'it drives, whereby'there is a perfect balance action between the parts and an improved operation obtained.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be'appare'nt from the following detailed description thereof;

Referring tothe drawings, 1, 1 designate the opposed side uprights of-the pressframe,
which are connected at theirupper' ends by a cross-yoke 2 and, at their low'erportions, form guides for the" vertical reciprocatory movementsof the customary blankholder The blank-holder 3; in the present instance, is of hollow coi'istructionand has the usualdie-carrying plunger4' work ing therethrough and guided'thereby. The plunger 4: is connected in the usual or any suitable manner by a pitm'ali orconnecti-ng rod 5 to a centrally disposed crank (3 on a crank shaft7, the opposite ends of which shaft are projected through and journal'ed :in suitable hearings in the frame uprights The frame head or cross-yoke 2 is provided centrally with a verticalguideway 9 in which the slide member 10 of the blankholder operating mechanism is guided'for vertical reciprocatory movements; This guideway, 1n the present instance, isshown as having opposed bearing surfaces 11 forming different arcs of a common circle, and the slide 10 is of substantially rectangular form in cross-section and providedat its corners with bearing portions 12for engagement'with the surfaces 11. In this manner,
the slide is permitted to freely turn within the guideway to accommodate itself to the connections between it and the driving and driven parts.
The slide 10 has a pitman or connecting rod- 13 centrally pivoted therein and projecting upward therefrom with" its upper end connected to a crank-arm 14:,which, in
the present instance, is of curved form -=maprojects laterally and downward from the center of a rock-shaft 15. This shaft is journaled in suitable bearings 16 crosswise of the upper end portion of the frame"12 at one side of the slideand in parallelrelation to the crank-shaft 7. The shaft at each end, in equidistantly spacedrelation to the rocker-211 1111 1 and without the respective sides ofthe frame, carries a late ally aro'ectin rocker-armli" which is connected at its free end by a pit'inan 18 to a subjacent crank 19 on the respective end of the crank shaft 7 at the outer side of the associated gear 8. It is thus evidentthat at each revolution of the crank-shaft 7 the shaft 15 is rocked to impart a complete upward stroke and a complete downward stroke to the slide 10.
A rock-shaftQO is journaled in the frame head 2 at each side of the slide 10 and at right angles to the shafts 7 and 15. An
arm 21 projects downwardly from each rock-shaft (when the slide 10 is in its lowered position) centrally of the shaft ends and is connected by a link 22 with the re-' spective side of the slide 10 at the lower end thereof, the links 22 in the present instance being pivoted to the slide between respective pairs of ears 23 on'the lower end portion of the slide. Upon an upward movement of the slide the links 22 exert an inward and upward pulling action on the rocker arms 21 and impart predetermined opposed rocking movements to the shafts 20, and upon a downward movement of the slide the links 22 exert a pushing movement on the arms 21 and rock the same downward and outward to the position shown in Fig. 1.
Each end of each rock-shaft 20 is; pro
,vided with a rocker-arm 24, which projects downwardly from its shaft when the slide 10 is at the lower end of its movement, and is connected by a link 24 to a head portion 3 of the blank-holder 3, whereby the requisite reciprocatory movements are imparted to the blank-holder from the shafts 20'when rocked by reciprocatory movements of the slide 10. The blank-holder 3 and its head 3 are adjustably connected by screws 3*, as well understood in the art.
It is evident that with my blank-holder operating mechanism an operating torque is applied equally to both ends of the rock shaft 15 from the respective ends of the crank shaft 7; that the slide operating torque of the shaft 15 is applied centrally therefrom'by the rocker-arm 1 1 and link 13 to the center of the slide 10; that the operating power of the slide 10 is in turn communicated equally and in opposed relation from opposite sides of its lower end to the 1 centers of the respective rock-shafts 20; that the uniform torque thus applied to the shafts 20 is communicated uniformly from the ends of said shafts to the blank-holder 3, and that by reason of the successive connections above described a perfectly balanced action of the slide, both with respect to the driving torque of the shaft 15 and the torque applied by the slide to the shafts 20, is obtained. It is also found that the requisite movements of the blank-holder, during the blank-shaping movement of the plunger and the initial portion of its reciprocating stroke are obtained by this blank operating mechanism.
I wish it understood that the invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and 1 changes without departing from the spirit a shaft mounted in the frame with bearings at opposite sides of the slide, means for rocking said shaft, operating connections between the shaft and slide, rockshafts mounted at opposite sides of the slide at right angles to the first shaft, connection between the slide and central portions of the respective rock-shafts to impart predetermined rocking movements thereto from reciprocatory movements of the slide, and connections between the ends of the rockshafts and the blank holder for reciprocating the latter from rocking movements of the former.
2. In a toggle press, a frame, a blankholder and a slide mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements in the frame, one above the other, a shaft mounted in the upper portion of the frame with bearings at opposite sides of the slide, means for rocking said shaft, a driving connection between the center of said shaft and the center of the slide, rock-shafts mounted at opposite sides of the slide, connection between the slide and the center portion of each rock shaft for imparting opposed reciprocatory movements to the rock shafts when the slide is reciprocated, and connections between the ends of the rock shafts and the blank-holder for reciprocating the latter from rocking movements of the former.
3. In a toggle press, a frame, a blankholder and a slide mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements therein, one above the other, means interposed between the slide and blank-holder for communicating reciprocatory movements from one to the other and including a pair of rock-shafts, one at each of opposite sides of the slide, and connections between the slide and the central portions of the respective rockshafts for rocking the latter from reciprocatory movements of the slide, a third rockshaft mounted in the frame above the pair of rock-shafts of said connecting means at right angles thereto, a connection between the central portion of said third rock-shaft and the slide for reciprocating the latter from rocking movements of the former, a plunger operating crank shaft mounted in the frame in parallel relation to said third rock-shaft, and driving connections between the ends of the crank-shaft and the ends of said third rockshaft for imparting uniform rocking torque to the rock-shaft from the crank shaft.
4. In a toggle press, a frame, a blankholder, and a slide mounted for reciprocatory movements in the frame, one above the other, a plunger operating crank shaft mounted in the frame, a rock shaft mounted in the frame above the crank shaft and parallel thereto, driving connection between the crank and rock shafts for rocking one from a revolution of the other, connection between the rock shaft and slide for reciproeating the latter from rocking movements of the former, a pair of rock shafts mounted in the frame at right angles to the first rock shaft and at opposite sides of the slide, connections between the slide and pair of rock shafts for rocking the latter from reciprocatory movements of the former, and connections between said pair of rock shafts and the blank-holder for reciprocating the latter from rocking movements of the former.
5. In a toggle press, a frame, a blank holder and a slide mounted for reciprocatory movements in the frame, one above the other, a rock shaft mounted in the frame crosswise thereof and having bearings at opposite sides of the slide, a connection for imparting reciprocatory movements to the slide from rocking movements of the rock shaft, means connected to an end of the rock shaft and operable to impart rocking movements thereto, and means connecting the slide and blankholder at opposite sides thereof and operable by movements of one to impart predetermined rcciprocatory movements to the other.
6. In a toggle press, a frame, a blankholder and a slide mounted for reciprocatory movements in the frame, one above the other, a plunger operating crank shaft mounted in the frame, a rock shaft mounted in the frame in parallel relation to the crank shaft and with bearings at opposite sides of the slide, connection between the slide and rock shaft for operating the one from the other, means connecting the ends of the crank and rock shafts for operating one from the other, and means connecting the slide and blank-holder for imparting reciprocatory movements from one to the other.
7. In a toggle press, a frame, a blankho-lder and a slide mounted for reciprocatory movements therein, one above the other, a plunger operating crank shaft, a rock shaft mounted in the frame crosswise thereof in parallel relation to the crank shaft and with bearings at opposite sides of the slide, means connecting the ends of the crank and rock shafts to operate one from the other, a connection between the center of the rock shaft and the slide to reciprocate the slide from a movement of the rock shaft, and means connecting the slide and blank-holder for imparting reciprocatory movements from one to the other, and including a pair of rock shafts journaled in the frame at opposite sides of the slide and at right angles tothe first rock shaft.
