An object of the invention is to provide a novelarrangement of the improved means employed) for communicating the requisite movements and dwells to the blank holder from the crank shaft and whereby the blank holder is given a moreperfect dwell in workh'olding position, thus insuring perfect Work ,without the use of cushioning means.
Another object is to provide a press of this character in which the main crank shaft or shafts and other blankholder operating parts are all carried by the crown of the press and whereby a simpler and more economical con;- struction can be had and the operation of the machine as a whole made eas With these various objects in viewthe invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the manner of combining or arranging the same all of which will be fully described hereinafter and set forth in the appended claims. 7 In the drawings forming a part of this specification, I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and in which Fig. 1 is a'face view of the press; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with the various parts in their raisedpositions Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in their lowered positions; Fig. 4 is a face view ofthe crown of the frame and also the side pieces thereof; and Fig. 5 is an end view of said parts in detail.
In constructing the press in accordance with my invention I employ abase 1O constituting the bed of the press and adapted to support a die (not shown) complementary to the drawing die connected 'to the plunger hereinafter referred to. At each end ofthe base or 7 bed piece 10 are arranged the uprights 11 extendingupwardly a considerable distance and upon the upper ends of these uprights 11 are 2 arranged the end pieces 12 of the crown of the machine, said end pieces being united by the top central yoke 13, a'smost clearly shown in Figs. 4c and 5. Tension rods 14 pass through the side pieces of the crown and likewise the 'standardsor side pieces 11 into the base 10 thereby securely uniting these various parts,
constituting what may betermed the frame of the press. The crown, in addition to the end pieces 12 and central yoke 13, is also provided with downwardly extending legs 15 and'horizontal braces 16 connect these depending legs and the end pieces 12 of the crown. V g
The end pieces 12 are each formed with openings 17 which are arranged in horizontal alignment with each other and through which the crank shaft 18 is inserted, this crank shaft being connected to. the crown by means of caps 19 next to the side pieces 12 in the opening 17 and'by caps 20 which are connected to the ends of the legs 15, itbeing understood that the top sides of the openings 17 and the ends of the legs 15 are curved out to provide one-half ofthe bearing while the caps 19 and the said crankshaft.
Connecting rods 21 are connected to the drawing die or punch 22 at their lower ends and to the crank portions 18 of the crank shaft so that as the crank shaft is rotated the drawing die or punch will be reciprocated vertically for the purpose of effecting the drawing or punching operation. The opposite ends of. the crank shaft 18 project beyond the end pieces of the crown a short distance and mounted upon each projecting end of the crank shaft is a large gear 23, .said gears 23 meshing with and being driven by gears 24 on a shaft 25 which in turn carries gears 26 meshing with gears 27 arranged upon the shaft 28 to which power is applied through a pulley 29 receiving its power from any suitable source. The mechanism thus far described is for the reciprocation of the drawing die or punch at the proper rateof speed andwith the rei 20 provide the remainder of the bearing for 7 quisite power for accomplishing its operations. I also propose to utilize this same general power for the reciprocation of the blank holder and it will of course be understood that for the proper function of the blank holder it is necessary that it operate in unison to a certain extent with the drawing die or punch but that the same should have a considerable dwell or rest for the purpose of holding the blank or material during the drawing or punching operation, and with the object of producing this reciprocation of the blank holder with this predetermined period of rest or dwell I provide a novel arrangement of links and levers which I shallnow describe.
Each gear 23 carries a crank pin-23 and to which is connected the upper end of a connecting rod 30, the lower end of each connecting ring being connected to a slide'3l traveling vertically in. the gibs or'guides- 32 arranged upon the exterior of the u rights 11. On the exterior of each end piece 12 of the crown of the frame there are mountedlevers or rocker arms 33 and also connected to the exterior of each end piece 12 of the crown and above the levers or rocker arms 33are mounted a second set of levers or rocker arms 34 and links 35 are employed to connect the upper ends of the rocker arms 33 with the lower ends of the rocker arms 34. Connecting rods-36 connect the lower ends of the rocker arms 33 with the slide 31and. the reciprocatoin of the slide through these connecting rods 36 actuates the rocker arms 33. The upper ends of the rocker arms 34 have links 37 connected thereto which links in turn are pivotally connected to-the arms 38 carried atthe ends of the rock shafts 39 attachedto the front and rear facesof the crown by bearing caps 40. Each rock shaft 39carriesinter-- mediate its ends, and adjacent the end pieces 12of the crown, the parallel arms 41 to which are connected connecting, rods 42. which, at their lower ends, are pivot-ally connected to -the cross head 43 to which in turn; is adjustably connected the blank holder 44' and it will be understood that the drawing die or punch 22 works through or within the blank holder in the completion of its punching or drawing functions.
It; will thus be seen that power is applied to the crankshaft and this same power is employed to reciprocate the slides 31 at opposite ends of the frame and from these slides motion is communicated to the rocker arms 33 and from these rocker arms 33 to the rocker arms 34 through the medium of the links 35 and from the rocker arms 34 to the rock shafts 39 through the medium of the links 37 and arms 38. A rocking motion of the shafts 39 at the front and rear of the machine is communicated to the blankholder through the medium of the arms 41 extending from the rock shaftsandthe. connecting rods 42 which in turn connect the arms 41 to the cross heads 43 to which the blank holder is adjustably united. Having thus described my invention, what I claimis-:.-- p
1. Ina press of the kind described, the combination with a frame, a blank holder and a punch, of acrank shaft carried by said frame, and towhich said. punch is operatively connected,v a slide-- reciprocally mounted on an end. of. the frame and; operatively connected with the crankshafhapair of rock shafts mounted. on said frame adjacent. the upper end thereof, one of said rock. shafts being mounted adjacent the front. of the'press and the other adjacent the rear thereof, an arm fixedly carried by. each. oat said. rock shafts intermediate itsends, another arm carried by each of saidrockshafts atanzend thereof and extending at an angle to said first mentioned arms, links connecting said first mentioned arms directly to said blank holder, and means connecting said second mentioned arms with said slide, said means including a pair of angled levers on an end of the press adjacent the front thereof mounted one above the other below said rock shafts and above said slide, a second pair of levers similarly mounted adjacent the rear of said press, a pair of connecting rods, one end of each being connected to said slide, the opposite end of one connecting rod being connected to one end of the lowermost lever of the first mentioned pair of angled levers, and the other end of the other connecting rod being connectedto one end of the lowermost lever of the second mentioned vpair of angled levers, a pair of links, one of said links having one end connected to the other end of the lowermost angled lever of the first mentioned pair and the other end connected to the adj acent end of the upper lever of the first mentioned pair, the other link similarly connecting the levers of the second mentioned pair, a second pair of links, one of said links having one end connected to the other arm of the upper lever of the first mentioned pair and the other end connected to the'arm on the end of the adj acent rock shaft and the second link similarly connecting a second pair of angled levers to the other rock shaft.
2. In a press of the kind described, the combination with a frame, blank holder and punch, of a crank shaft to which said punch is operatively connected, a slide reciprocating on an end of the frame and operatively connected with the crank shaft, rook shafts arranged upon the frame at the upper portion thereof, each of said rock shafts carrying arms connected by links with the blank holder, and other arms extending at an angle to said first arms, and means for operatively connecting the slide with the rock shafts, said means including connecting rods, a pair of angled levers mounted on one end of said frame, one at each side thereof, one end of each of said connecting rods being connected to said slide, the other ends being connected, one to one armof each of said angled levers, a second pair of angled levers mounted on one end of said frame above said first angled levers and below said rock shafts one at each side thereof, links, one connecting the other arm of each of said first pair of angled levers with one arm of one of said last angled levers, and links, each having one end connected to the other arm of one of the said last angled levers and the other end connected to one of said other arms of said rock shafts.
3. In a press of the kind described, the combination with a frame, blank holder and a punch, of a crank shaft to which said punch is operatively connected, a slide reciprocating on an end of the frame and operatively to said slide, the other ends being connected,
one to one arm of each of said angled levers, a second pair of angled levers mounted on one end of said frame above said first angled levers and belowsaid rock shafts, one at each side thereof, links, one connecting the other arm of each of said first pair of angled leverswith one arm of one of said last angled levers, and links, each having one end connected to the other arm of one of said last angled levers and the other end connected to one of said other arms of said rock shafts, the angle of the first mentioned pair of angled levers being more acute than the angle of the second mentioned pair.
