A. S. SPEIRS BATHERS BAG OR PURSE Filed Jan. 26, 1923 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. SPEIRS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y;
BATHERS BAG OR PURSE.
Application filed January 26, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. SPEIRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bathers Bag or Purse, of which the following is a speclfication.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used for holding valuables, toilet articles, chewing tobacco, or any other small thing which a bather may wish to use in the water, the structure comprising a bag or sack, novel means being provided for closing the mouth of the sack hermetically, and novel means being supplied for suspending the sack from the bathing apparel of the wearer.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section similar to Figure 2 but showing a modification; Figure 1 is a fragmental elevation showing a modification in the clamp.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a clamp, denoted generally by the numeral 1 and ordinarily made of metal, the clamp being resilient and including arms 2 and 3 connected by a resilient bend 4, the arm 2 having a hook-shaped keeper, beneath which the end 6 of the arm 3 may be inserted by a transverse movement, owing to the re siliency of the clamp, the arm 3 being bent outwardly to form aloop-shaped finger piece 7, located adjacent to the end 6 and constituting means whereby the arm 3 may be manipulated to engage the end 6 with the keeper 5 and to disengage the end 5 therefrom.
Serial No. 615,064.
A suspension means is supplied, whereby the clamp may be held on the garment of a bather, and the suspension means may be in the form of a safety pin including an inner bar 9 carrying a guard 10, and a prong 11 adapted to be engaged with the guard, fingers 8 being struck from the arm 2, and the fingers being engaged about the inner bar 9 of the safety pin to hold the safety pin 011 the arm 2. The bar 9 of the safety pin generally is permitted to turn in the fingers 8, so that the safety pin will lie practi cally parallel to the garment of the bather and take up but little room.
The device includes a bag 12, ordinarily made of rubber or some other light waterproof material, the bag being tapered at 14 toward its mouth 15, the mouth 15 of the bag being gripped between the arms 2 and 3 of the clamp, and being held closed hermetically.
It will be obvious that the device is so constituted that the bag may be held on a bathing garment and be closed against the entrance of water, it being possible for the bather to carry with him any small articles which he may require.
The suspension means may be of any de sired sort. In Figure 3, parts hereinbefore described have been designed by numerals previously used, with the suffix a. In Figure 3 a longitudinal slot 16 is formed in the arm 2 and the material set free in the formation of the slot is formed into a tapered resilient prong 17 adapted to engage with a guard 18 on the arm 2.
In Figure 4, wherein another modification is disclosed the arms 19 are connected by a hinge 20, in place of the resilient bend 4.
What is claimed is 1. A device adapted to be attached to the garments of a bather, and comprising a clamp including inner and outer arms detachably interengaged at their ends, a bag of such size as to serve as a purse and of such size as to afford no inconvenience to a swimmer, the mouth of the bag being gripped between the arms of the clamp, and means on the exposed surface of the inner arm for attaching the clamp and the bag to a bathing garment, one of the arms of the clamp being broad enough to conceal said means from view.
2. A device of the class described, construeted as set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that said means is a safety pin comprising a bar and a prong detachably engaged With the bar, the inner arm of the clamp being provided with spaced members wherein the inner bar of the pin is received.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of twowvitnesses:
ALBERT S. SPEIRS.
WVitnesses ELLA B. BLOM. DANIEL HERRERA.
